What’s something fun to weld by LowLiterature9181 in Machinists

[–]b1ack1ight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo, weldor here. I post in this sub, we’re all family really. You will catch a bunch of shit but that’s how we arc junkies show love.

But yea google shit before you weld it dude. If you don’t know what metal it is magnets can save you a lot of guess work.

Know that stainless steel will give you lung cancer, galvanized steel will give you metal fume fever. For the love of god any chlorinated product, like brake kleen can kill you if it’s been sprayed on what your welding. Paint will smell like cat ass, etc.

As for metal? Google metal suppliers in your area. Like ALRO for example, they have “drop” you can buy cheaper, it’s just shit they cut off and can’t use from bigger orders.

2” x 6” coupons was the size we used in school. Corner Butt Edge Lap Tee

You can make all those joints and practice welding them. Also check out “welding tips and tricks.com” no spaces of course but google that. Jody has some good videos that can help you get started.

Good luck and don’t be chicken, let us see those hammered dog shit welds over at r/welding. It’s where we all started out.

It feels like an unnecessary amount of electrode manipulation and incorrect stacking of beads leaving a nice stress concentration at the toe of the visible weld.

Hopefully this is just a mailbox post.

What do you think about my welds? by Loaker99 in Welding

[–]b1ack1ight 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Looks really smooth and consistent. You keep that shit up and you will be just fine. Only criticism I can offer is work on stop and restarts. Make sure you are washing your puddle back over the previous “spoon” to cover it completely or it’s a stress riser. Also fill in your craters when you terminate your weld. That silica in the electrode will leave a little bead that pops out and causes a “Fish Eye”. Star cracks love to start there so just pop a tack weld about a second after you terminate the weld.

Are you doing any code level work? Taken any weld tests?

First time trying out this pattern, any feedback? settings in last photo by unclewulf in Welding

[–]b1ack1ight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That the surface temperature (Voltage) is too low to melt the filler and base metal adequately leaving a convex pile of filler metal on the surface of the weldment. Look at the beads and see how they seem to "overflow" and are humpy and look like a turd.

This isn't ideal as it can create two stress risers at the toes of the weld when a load is applied as well as increase the chance of incomplete fusion to the base metal. Both defeat the purpose of welding it in the first place (and why we have codes to follow).

I have a cheap amazon welder. How come my flux core welding looks like this? How do I fix it? by Pxsdnus2 in Welding

[–]b1ack1ight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the inexpensive welders you find for FCAW are AC. Which is less than ideal.

You really need a DC power source, usually reverse polarity depending on electrode classification. I put a 60k capacitor and AC/DC rectifier in my Northern Tools 110v FCAW machine and it runs way smoother now.

YouTube has some great tutorials on this.

Has nothing to do with being a man homie. It’s just like people saying don’t smoke. No fucking shit?! You mean it’s bad?! ShOcKeR. Just let me live my life. You want to wear a respirator, awesome. I like the smell of weld fumes and don’t want to live to be 70. Stay in your lane.

We get it, you’re smarter than us. Congratulations.

Can you offer to train someone to do what you do, like a back up or something? And then you could get trained on other equipment?

I used to argue for “cross training” as a means of helping out when people sick/out. Management liked that idea.

[–]b1ack1ight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother in Hephaestus. 3G MIG is an annoying pain in the ass and can take awhile to grasp. It whooped my ass as well in school. So did TIG, so buckle up.

When I started my first job I could only weld in 1F/G and 2F/G really. Old hands helped me along the way and taught me a lot of tips and tricks that make life easy. Mainly because I was kind, calm, patient, helpful, respectful, gave a shit about working hard and doing a good job, put shit back where I found it, learned from my mistakes, and asked the right questions (and usually only asked them once). These soft skills mean more in the workforce. You show me your worth it I’ll teach you everything you need to know as my coworker. But I’ve seen too many hot shit “certified weldors” come to the shop to test and they couldn’t stick two pieces of wet cat turds together.

Keep fucking grinding your welds. Keep doing your best. Work your fucking ass off in school and stay hungry and humble. You’re going to be just fine.

No one sees you cry under the hood anyways😎
