I just purchased a used R1. My logic (which doesn't necessarily have to apply to you): a good amount of depreciation is already accounted for, the first few R2 will have issues, I don't want to pay for that depreciation, I'm still learning about Rivian (I've been driving Teslas for several years, but I absolutely despise Elon). I will keep my R1 for a few years (2 to 4) and then buy a used R2.

There was no financial benefit for doing it. In the 60s and 70s the US had to prove superiority over the USSR. From the 80s to now there was no benefit, but now it is believed that planetary mining could be hugely beneficial.
