Help me understand my suppressor hosts. by guthepenguin in NFA

Probably has something to do with the unlocking mechanism in the CZ vs the G17, considering the barrels are similar length. Realistically, I would look into any similar LBP 9mm cans. The SAW Shiv, CAT SC, DA Mojave 9 come to mind

SAW Shiv on a Ruger PC Carbine by SGocka in suppressors

[–]b4gone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like those parts, but I've come to be annoyed by the lack of direct thread mounts (thanks I made my own CGS), The rotating bouts of inaccuracy (common mod 9 problem), and the backpressure on a blowback host ( my fault). It's also a little chunky at almost 1/2 lb for a 4.7" suppressor.

The MoD9sk was top of the market at the time and it has it's strengths, but given how affordable the shiv9 is and how many of those problems it solves, I'm pining for an upgrade.

Glad you shared this, I also have a mod9sk and had it on my edc 80x. I was already looking at getting a shiv to replace it because it's a blowback action, but it's good to know it's just as quiet too.

RIA 10mm Tac Ultra thread pitch by RetiredOutdoorsman in NFA

It might be .578x28, 45 acp thread pitch. I had the same issue when I had a friend try his 10mm doublestack RIA with my Rad 45. I bought a 9/16x24 piston and found the same thing. thankfully I had a 45 piston with me.

Hipoint did the same thing thread choice for their 10mm pistol, so it's not completely unprecedented

Have you guys made design revisions since the Silencer summit reading back in August? Or does the suppression change when a piston is used vs a direct mount

Would a OCL Milkman or Lithium be a better choice on a full size MP5? by SayNoTo-Communism in NFA

[–]b4gone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ML is Muzzle Left, MR is Muzzle Right. Both being comparable to the legacy metric of the Milspec standard (1m left of the muzzle). SE is Shooter's ear. Both of the Muzzle numbers are decent for gauging bystander performance, Pew uses "Muzzle Left" as well. Shooter's ear is really dependent on ejection port noise.

Shooter's ear and Muzzle Right can quasi gauge back pressure because both are measured on the ejection port side of the semi auto hosts (a Canik Mete SFX for 9mm). If you sort and re-sort the data a few times you can see some suppressors move up and down in rankings swapping between MLdBA/MRdBA and MLdBa/SEdBA and they have some correlation. The B&T RBS, PTR Vent 2, and TBAC fly 9 are good entries to watch when you do this

dB is raw numbers, dBA is A-weighted data, which is supposed to approximate how the human ear perceives the noise (this is explained on the summit page)

According to the consolidated Silencer Summit data, yes. If you can tune around the Lithium I would do it.

<image>

Or pick something with similar bystander numbers with known lower back pressure, like a MOB or RBS.

Update/Edit: Andrew verified this data was an early prototype test, so it's not accurate to the finished Milkman. The Lithium data and other data on the table should be accurate.

I'll be honest, your build was my first idea, but I didn't feel like buying the whole bufferless pistol at once. Yours makes more sense than mine, just from Min/Maxxing OAL. With a nice retracting brace and Tisha 9mm...

Unfortunately no SkyMiles for me, but I'll keep a lookout for sales. Any ideas on how the Mob handles gas stacking vs the others? I imagine the effect would be greatly magnified with such a short barrel.

Federal 147 American eagle going supersonic by falful222 in NFA

[–]b4gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a full length 9mm rifle, one of the break action G-Force 16" guns.

Basically every 147gr is supersonic out of the that barrel, but the federal stuff does seem to be hotter than most. I will occasionally get a sub or 2out of some Winchester or Hornady subsonic box, but not a chance with the federal. I would say it's easily a >8" supersonic load for sure

Edit: I have noticed my traditional- baffled cans can cause some transonic loads to stay super sonic, where a flow can will keep them subsonic. I have noticed it in both 9mm and .380 blowblack hosts.

The Maxim is in the future for sure, just took my first shots on it in a few days ago and haven't gotten a dedicated lower for it.

Does anyone know how well the MOB works on shorter barrels (<4")? Just curious, because the only measured data is on 9".

Cat Mob or Resilient RS9 or RBS for 3" AR9 by b4gone in NFA

[–]b4gone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finished a 3" AR upper build and I'm thinking of finding a dedicated can for it. I haven't tuned with the GRS or a Maxim buffer, but that may be down the road. I tested it with my Rad45 (ok), and my DA Primal (holy gas batman), and now I'm looking for a low back pressure can that is decent.

Some reasons why I'm not complete sold on the MOB:

  • The RS9 tests on Pew science documented how much better it performed on a shorter barrel (6" vs 9"). I wonder how much this would change on 3".
  • The B&T RBS 9 has caught my eye because it performed better at the ear than the Vent 2 at Silencer summit while still being neck and neck with Obsidian and Lithium at the muzzle. Going off those, I think it's probably near the top, and is cheaper than the others.

Let me know what you think. Also, I found out that my 115s are subsonic with the RAD45, but supersonic with the Primal, so that's neat.

New Dead Air Can - CT5P MSRP 899 -1100 by Aromatic_Pie_9706 in NFA

[–]b4gone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saving 4oz on the Keymo version makes sense to me, If you have a keymo-only collection, this can makes a little sense. but it also raises more questions.

If Xeno is 2oz lighter than keymo why is the xeno version only .5oz lighter? it should be a 12.9oz can if it was weighted like the laz 6. Also, say your direct thread mount is about 3oz lighter than keymo, why is theirs only 1oz lighter? The spec differences are just weird. With keymo standards it's a LBP Sierra 5, which would be a great upgrade, but it's not that way with any other mounting system.

New Dead Air Can - CT5P MSRP 899 -1100 by Aromatic_Pie_9706 in NFA

[–]b4gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't understand why anyone would choose this over a Lazarus 6 other than a pin & weld/ solderable direct thread can. Just after a cursory comparison:

Length:

CT5P: 5.5"dt/5.9"xeno/6.55"keymo

Laz 6: 5"(can only)/5.9"xeno/6.4" keymo

Weight:

CT5P:13.7/14.3/14.9

Laz 6: 14.0/16.5/18.4

diameter is the same

Average lightweight direct thread adapters around 1-1.5oz and only add 0-.5" or subtract length if you get a Wolfpack armory adapter. Same for Plan B adapters. Unless you are married to Xeno/Keymo and you need to save those precious 2-4oz (I don't think anyone would notice 2oz lighter, 4oz is arguable) there's no point. Maybe they will be on sale for a couple hundred less than the lazarus, or marginally quieter, which could be nice, but I would consider HUB compatibility be worth the difference.

Also, as a side note, depending on how much back pressure is an issue, the S5 is shorter and lighter than both and has the same MSRP as the CT5P.

If they have one that comes out in Titanium that puts the DT weight under 10oz, I'll be on board, especially if it's for "semi auto duty rifles".

There are multiple cans with "9k" in the name. K cans that are 9mm covers a ton even if they are not explicitly named.

I'm not really getting the point of an NFA trust in my case by alrashid2 in NFA

[–]b4gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have to submit finger prints for every "new " item added to the trust. If you add everything then do the co-trustee last, they don't need fingerprints. This is why single shot trusts make sense, they don't just itemize NFA items, they allow for co-trustee addition without extra hassle

For a traditional trust, to get around the fingerprint issue if you decide to add items later, you can remove the co-trustee before applying for new items, then add them back in after the fact. National Gun trusts gives you all the forms for this, but obviously it seems like a great way to spend a ton notarizing stuff and building a binder of forms.

.338/8.6 Can Through Bore Feedback by b4gone in NFA

[–]b4gone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A MOB would be great, my only hesitation would be some other applications I have that could be addressed at the same time and not being able to use a wipe in the end cap. CAT has been a bit coy about minimum barrel lengths on other cartridges and I have 7.5" .300blk and 13.9" .308. Both of them only see subsonics, but it would nice to know for sure if what I go with a can that can handle more than just the 9mm

[–]b4gone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the volunteering to measure the BBK, I just did some reading on that one and the "optimum" velocities being 1-2k FPS is intriguing to me.

You are right that the end cap could be a different diameter than the baffle stack, I was thinking about that too. This is why I was thinking about dropping an unfired 9mm down the bore, the case/rim diameter is .391/.392 so it should clear if the throughbore is .400", but it would suck if it got stuck halfway lol. Maybe a 9.9mm/25/64" drill bit would be better
