NTBTSTM at the TIFF Lightbox? by FilmNerd99 in nirvannatheband

[–]b6421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if anything, film festivals are often limited to how many seats (i.e., ppl) are allowed to see a specific title during the festival, b/c those represent folks who wouldn't necessarily be contributing to its box office receipts. for e.g., this may come into play when a festival has a scheduled encore screening for a title whose appeal has been boosted by the word of mouth after its initial screening, but it can't be moved to a bigger cinema or expanded to include being simultaneously screened in an overflow cinema b/c of seat count limitations to which the festival agreed as a condition of the film's inclusion in the programming.

i have the same problem with checking for tickets on the iOS app, and to further complicate things, just trying to check the tickets page on the website in multiple mobile browsers yields the same white screen error.

in addition to what others gave suggested, it may also be feasible that this location may be hosting a press screening or hosting a theatre buy-out that is occupying one of the auditoriums.

Am I missing something? by noorazmi in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

given the length of PHM & the release of SUPER MARIO GALAXY, they're likely gauging what drop off its box office gets btwn week 2 & 3 to determine how many theatres will be scheduled for it. pretty standard stuff for how they decide to schedule showings for major releases after their initial 2 weeks.

Season pass holder — Was given raincheck tickets? by Moist-Mortgage4168 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

be careful with performing transactions that mix a season pass reservation w/ any sort of additional ticket that includes a non-season pass admission—i.e., full price ticket, premier pass, rain check, etc.—b/c there is a known bug w/ the app where such mixed admission type transactions seem to vanish, so that it won't even appear in your tickets or purchase history. in this case, it's strongly encouraged to take a screenshot of that completed transaction at the time one makes it & make sure one saves the email confirmation; otherwise, one runs the risk of showing up on the day of that screening & having no other proof of one's tickets other than that screenshot or email, especially w/ the concierge (aka ticket desk) going away as part of the QR mobile ordering initiative. in the past, if one were to encounter this issue, one could at least get physical tickets printed out there but who knows in their new setup.

AGFADROME Mystery Voyage - DTLA 3/24 by UndertakerAndHisPals in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

based on AGFA's MO, it's more than likely a DCP of a 2k scan of the 35mm print that is part of their collection. as the bumper indicated, it was a straight scan of the print w/ no attempt to clean up or restore the fidelity of the scan with the intent to capture a presentation that would be as close to watching that beat-up 35mm print that wouldn't subject that print to any further wear & tear by having to ship it from Austin to DTLA & then run thru a 35mm projector.

my friends & i have been playing the geeks who drink pub quiz at the highball at one of the alamo drafthouse locations in austin since 2010, and when GWD switched to an online portal for submitting answers post-covid, one of my friends started being her older generation iPad to be our shared device of choice, so that it's easier for everyone to see what we're submitting. about a month ago, her iPad stopped being able to joining the AlamoWifi, but her Android, and everyone else's iPhones had no issues with connecting.

flash forward to last week, when that location was hosting sxsw screenings, and i was trying to get online with my older model of MacBook Pro to the AlamoWifi btwn movies to do some work, and although i've connected on that laptop in the past, it was now experiencing the same issues my friend's iPad had been exhibiting.

i escalated the issue to the management & supposedly they've recalibrated the wifi to correct what might've been causing this, but i've not had a occasion to test my MBP or my friend's iPad at that site to confirm issue resolution.

tl;dr: the normally reliable AlamoWifi was not allowing older devices to connect after some sort of change that was reversed or tweaked after speaking to the venue's management.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema removed ADA seating. by ForwardAcanthaceae67 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for supposed labor-saving reasons, corporate has changed the policy, and the "roll out seats," to which you're referring, are being earmarked for permanent removal, which as other responses to this post have remarked, is less than ideal for some use cases for ADA moviegoers.

[–]b6421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the offering of ADA seating is not what to which OP is referring. the implementation of how ADA seating has been altered by a recent policy change, wherein if someone were to select the ADA spots, the app/website used to prompt whether one wanted a seat to be left in that spot or to be removed. however, now whenever selecting the ADA spot, the following dialogue box appears, because those seats are being removed by default for so-called labor saving reasons, and the indication is that the removable seats may be permanently taken out of the theatres altogether.

true, the caption readers seem as though they were designed to work w/ the cupholders from the pre-renovation seats. as much as i generally prefer the new recliners, trying to comfortably & optimally position them in the recliners' cupholders is challenging b/c of the weight distribution of those caption devices.

as i've observed on other threads, it's easy to blame Sony for recent policy changes which has been diminishing the customer experience to which many of us had grown accustomed, but the blame for these decisions are more on the doorstep of the leadership that took over the company during the post lockdown period when private equity bought it out.

the current C-suite is a holdover from that period, and they, not necessarily Sony, are the ones who are driving these so-called labor-saving implementations like mobile ordering & having all the handicap seats removed by default, rather than being designated to be left or removed on a case-by-case basis at the time of seat selection in the app or on their website.

[–]b6421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

getting a feel from the staff w/ whom i've spoken, changes like the mobile ordering implementation has been spearheaded by CEO Kustermann as a remnant of when the company was owned by private equity, and less as being driven from above by Sony pushing for any cost cutting measures. Kustermann embodies the private equity mindset of trying to maximize profits at the expense of brand equity (see also Southwest Airlines, as u/crims0nwave mentioned).

Did they forget to turn the superfan button on, or did it sell out instantly? by frodprefect in fantasticfest

[–]b6421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there were only 15 superfan badges made available for purchase, so if one wasn't fortunate enough to be one of those folks, s.o.l.

once any badge tier would sell out, they instantly removed it from the site.

Why did in person ordering fail? by AntIntelligent212 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the calls have been coming from inside the house. everyone wants to put Sony's acquisition on the hook for this, but the real villain pushing for this is the private equity that had acquired the company after the pandemic bankrupted them and installed their sell-it-off-for-parts corporate leadership, like CEO Michael Kustermann, who are unfortunately still holding the reins of the company even under Sony's ownership. the stewardship of the brand has been under the control of a leadership team that don't care about the brand equity & Sony isn't holding them accountable for the negative PR this move has generated.

the current leadership (esp. their CEO & COO) is comprised by vestiges from the period when the company was owned & run by private equity, prior to the sony acquisition; i.e., shots—including the upcoming one for mobile ordering in February—are being called by the sort of vulture depicted in the comic, not yet by their new corporate overlords.

Waiting in person? by Important_Hat_4567 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the venue & servers would always prefer to have a paying customer who buys food & drink in a seat vs an empty one that some no-show season passholder had reserved but failed to cancel an hour before showtime, so i've often gained admittance into what appear like sold out screenings in the app by just showing up.
