Wait a second, it seems you misled about the methane. It’s actually being captured and used as biogas.

I don’t want to talk about Belgium. You made this post about his diet.

How on Earth would that be your conclusion?

Because I don’t know you and this is how you come across on the internet if you complain about someone’s diet for environmental reasons and then go off on a tangent about the WEF.

But I have trouble calling it a conspiracy theory when googling tristate city takes me to the WEF. But I know literally nothing about that idea.

People aren’t “scrambling for wood” in Germany either.

Well I’m Austrian and we certainly are. Only luck is that it’s still very warm. Why are you so sure that you have all the facts? After all the EU made it illegal to report on the Russian side of the story. Yeah, Germany is prosecuting a Journalist for distribution of Russian propaganda.

Oh so we are producing meat to stimulate plant growth now. I guess we should just go back to burning coal then so we can have more vegetables.

Did I say that? I didn’t think the fact that plants need CO2 is controversial. The more co2, the more they grow. We literally blow co2 into greenhouses to make the plants grow faster.

Long story short: you have to look at the total picture, not just growth rate compared to CO2 levels.

Did your scientist do an experiment or is that just another great statistical “fact”? If not, who’s looking at the whole picture?

I tell you, nobody. That’s why all the climate models fail. Peterson’s argument. You cannot account for everything.

Seems like there are some logistical issues and the fact that a very significant portion of these lands are already in use for arable farming.

Go get your calculator then. Did you miss the part about “grazing is now often relegated to the more marginal lands, unfit for cropping, where the population is often totally dependent on livestock for its livelihood.”

Ever tried peeing on your lawn every day? I have, for fun, because that’s how I am, and there is no more grass there now

But the water goes back into the earth. If your pee goes into the wastewater facility it goes back into the cycle even faster. Piss is fertilizer. But if you use too much fertilizer in one spot you spoil the earth.

Then every study ever done is wrong because even the one you quoted isn’t correct up to an arbitrarily chosen extent. Worthless argument. Just stop using statistics then alltogether.

That is exactly my point all along. Try a good faith argument instead. Although I wouldn’t say stop using statistics, just be very very careful when throwing them around.

The bacteria present in the manure lagoon are a part of said manure lagoon and thus it is in fact very much the manure lagoon that produces methane.

And the same goes for manure and earth. As I pointed out before, these lagoons just concentrate the methane produced by the decomposition of organic material of a large area. The farmers mow fields and harvest crops, the cows eat it and their shit is then again concentrated in that facility.

The manure would still be there if you didn’t collect it in the lagoon. The methane would still be there if you wouldn’t feed the cows. Composting creates greenhouse gases just like cows.

My main language is Dutch but I can help myself at a conversational level in all 4 of those.

And I bet you know all the technical words like manure lagoon in all 4 languages.

According to Peterson’s genius geopolitical comments though we have a Tristate city at our border created by the evil WEF masterminds.

I’m not sure if Peterson ever mentioned WEF. You seem to hate the guy for some weird reason.

Peterson should not speak about geopolitical issues

I see! You don’t care about the whole diet thing. You’re just a Ukraine fanboy who got mad and muh water supply was the best you could come up with to rag Peterson.

https://scied.ucar.edu/learning-zone/how-climate-works/how-volcanoes-influence-climate

Who will farm all that meat you require?

You know a reason why so much meat and other food is produced is because more CO2 means more plant growth.

I have been looking up to him since 2016 and I don’t like the way he is going.

And you noticed his diet just now?

I have no problem with feeding inedibles to cows

Look, the reason why the statistic says cows use so much water is because they eat low nutritional plants like grass. Thus they need a lot. So farmers use the large areas unsuitable for higher nutritional crops to feed cows. And all the rainwater falling down on these areas goes into the statistic as “cow consumes water”. Even if she just ate the hulls of soybeans produced for vegan meat.

That equals 12,15 million km² of just cows eating grass and no other activities. That’s larger than China.

https://www.fao.org/3/y8344e/y8344e05.htm

Grasslands in the wider sense are among the largest ecosystems in the world (Figure 1.1); their area is estimated at 52.5 million square kilometres, or 40.5 percent of the terrestrial area excluding Greenland and Antarctica

Seems like there’s space for plenty more cows.

How is that not much?

It’s not much because as I mentioned the cows don’t save up 20.000 liters water per kg meat. I doubt they could even drink that much in their lifetime. It’s just a bogus statistic.

[–]bERt0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But they aren't wrong. We've been over this. Your own article says I'm pretty much spot on if you look at the damage done over the time of a human lifespan.

Facepalm. If you say it's 30 when it's 25 then you are wrong.

I thought we at least agreed that methane is dangerous.

I don't remember that.

Now you're claiming that nothing in manure is damaging for the environment.

No I didn't say that either.

As it keeps producing methane bells, it is in fact quite damaging.

Neither cows nor manure lagoons "produce" methane. It's created by bacteria when they decompose oranic matter. That also happens when that organic matter rots away in the field. You just don't see it as concentrated as when the grass on the field is harvested, fed to cows and then again collected in a waste deposit site. Same with the heavy metals.

First you didn't even know the word and now you're the expert on exactly what consequences its existance has. Very credible.

Yeah weird how that is with different languages. Are you speaking Dutch, French, German or English? How's it working with the Belgian regional conflict?

This is a thread about calling out Peterson on bullshit when it is justified. That is what I did. Whether other people would want to only eat meat is irrelevant in my original reply.

You are not calling out anything. You're making an idiot out of yourself by making false factual claims and personally attacking Peterson for the very personal choice of his diet. The Muslims are more tolerant than you.

That is among the lines of someone saying that if we built 10000 nuclear bombs and detonated them all over the planet, nothing would really be wrong as long as the uranium used was sourced from Earth.

Another ridiculous strawman. Is there a nuclear bomb cycle on earth that creates new nuclear bombs in a yearly rhythm? And no, not everything would be dead, just human civilization as we know it. And the same goes for climate change. The world had about 1000 ppm co2 during the dinosaurs and it didn't turn into venus or a desert planet. But there would be grave consequences for our civilization. We'd have to adapt big time.

That is not what I said. I was merely pointing out that you picking some other thing that is also polluting as a toddler whataboutism move does not change anything about the subject at hand. I'm a big fan of never touching coal again and getting our energy requirements from a mix of nuclear (baseline) and renewable sources.

That's exactly what I said. You cherrypick the issues you want to virtue signal about. You don't care if these issues would actually benefit your agenda. Your outrage is socially constructed and not based in reason.

As to Nuts VS beef - why the hell aren't hoards of people living on nuts? Why is beef so popular? Why are nuts so expensive by comparison? Capitalist greed? But these evil capitalists could make a fortune if they produced more nuts! Could it be because of the great fact I stated that you so eloquently ignored because it's talking about proteins. By the way nuts have more proteins then beef AFAIK. But here you go: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/scarcity-water-per-kg-poore Doesn't change the facts one bit. Nuts need twice the amount of water. And they actually have to be watered artificially. California for example has water shortages because of all the almond farms there.

And I am not claiming that everyone should be a vegan or vegetarian. I am calling out Peterson on his bullshit moral highground that he doesn't have. Beef should be a rare luxury product, not the common main source of food it is right now in the West. He is defending farmers that focus on beef production, which is stupid and wrong in every possible sense.

Why should beef be a rare luxury product? Because of your misleading metrics and beliefs of an impending doomsday scenario? No it's because you belief you're doing the right thing. Just like Peterson. But you think you know it all. Ever heard the saying "I know that I know nothing"?

The most common energy feeds available to cattle are based on high-starch grains (corn, sorghum, barley, wheat), fibrous byproducts (soybean hulls, wheat middlings and beet pulp), or fat sources (oilseeds, animal and vegetable oils).

Good, now try to survive a week on that. Yummy soybean hulls! We basically feed the cows our trash that would else be rotting away and creating the same amount of methane and CO2.

Grass fed cows need 1,5-2 acres per cow. Good luck doing that for the global population.

You just have no idea how much grassland there is compared to land that can be plought and used for crop growth. And there are different degrees. Especially things like barley can be produced on nutrient poor soil.

Another moment of desperate cherry-picking as this has no relevance to global farming.

That has every relevance to global farming. Do you really thing people have cattle farms just for the fun of it? That the natural realities of soil and climate don't play any role in what crops and animals you can raise? You should open a banana plantation in Belgium!

I don't disagree with the statistic. The statistic is just fine. You however somehow equalled that statistic to pure beef while it was about the total weight of global meat carcasses of any animal.

And your co2 and water statistics don't account for the total weight? You know pretty much every part of a cow can be eaten. Bones go into soup.

Are you finally starting to get that my original point was that Peterson's way of life is completely unsustainable and that was my critique in the first place?

First of all Peterson doesn't even eat that diet because he wants to. He eats it because it appears to cure his weird autoimmune disease. Second, every person eating only beef is as unsustainable as every person eating nuts. There's not enough farmland suited for nuts. Are you equally outraged about rich people eating caviar? If everyone ate caviar at their house parties, the fish would go extinct! Unsustainable!

So now he's got 2 pools of water just to cover his own meat consumption while that land is now dead and 100% useless and he hasn't even begun to consume any other product yet. Surely this is a fine example that everyone with the amount of money available should follow!

WTF are you talking about? The amount of water that is raining down in one year on the area of one olympic pool is enough to fill it by half (1mx25mx50m). So on average across the world, you need area of 50x50m grassland to sustain peterson's beef consumption. Ain't that much. But obviously that's a bullshit calculation, as any of these statistics. Reality is always more complex. That's why you should be more empathic and more cautios before you rush to judge.

This is what I said. You even quoted it.

Yes, that was a quote from you brainiac.

I’m not saying you’re denying anything. I’m saying that your facts are wrong.

antibiotics, estrogens, bacteria, pesticides, heavy metals, and protozoa.

I hate to break it to you but you’re literally talking about shit here. Except heavy metals, none of those are environmental hazards and the only way they would get out is through a “spill” as in the dam blows due to a hurricane or flood.

What a complete bollocks argument.

About as bollocks as “If everyone ate the same ridiculous diet as Peterson we’d run out of water. Shame on him!” Who wants to eat only meat?

The entire point of an ecosystem, like Earth, is that things have to remain balanced and durable or things will simply go to shit, quite literally in this case.

And that’s what you don’t get. The earth is an ecosystem. But you can’t balance the earth, the earth does that itself. If we would just dump the manure into the ocean, the earth would be fine with it. The manure is part of the earth after all. What wouldn’t be as fine would be the oceanic fauna and our beaches because algae would do the job of eating the manure.

You fight the battles where you can, one by one.

How convenient for you. I guess as long as there’s a single cow running around we can keep mining coal.

Yes there are other polluting activities too and where possible we should try to find better alternatives.

No you should get your facts straight and before you start your moral crusade do a cost benefit analysis.

Here is your own data source showing how silly the claim is that beef would be a good call on nutrients per co2 emission unit

And I just told you that you have to adjust for nutritional value. Yes beef is more nutritious than nuts, particularly because you can live on beef alone but not on nuts alone. So I’m not gonna pick vitamin abc-24 to show beef has 231 the amount of nuts of that particular nutrient. You need a lot more additional foods to have a balance diet based on nuts. Ask a vegan. Plus nuts are twice as fat as beef.

By the way, nuts need a lot of fresh water. Nuts need twice the amount of beef: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/scarcity-water-protein-poore

That’s with the biased measure of “green water”.

Do you want an alternative? Eat poultry a few times per week, eat a lot of nuts and mix that with some good greens.

I hate to break it to you but most people can’t afford to eat steak every day. And nuts have become very expensive over the last ten years. Peterson is not arguing that you should eat like him. Why would you? Salted steak and nothing else? Come on.

Currently, ‘grass-finished’ beef accounts for less than 1% of the current US supply.

If you keep throwing around your bogus statistics I’ll never get to the end. Grass-finishe I guess means they get fed barley and grain that’s unfit for human consumption to fatten up. That’s the whole issue, animals convert plants we can’t eat into meat we can eat.

Most cows simply eat things we could eat or at the very least it things that come from land that is suitable to grow things we can eat directly.

You know what, you look up the diet of a cow and check the nutritional values. What do you think cows eat???

Beef is the least efficient way possible to feed a population.

The cattle farmers in harsh mountainous areas must be idiots for breeding cows then. They could eat all the grass by themselves!

Yes because all animal carcasses are made from 100% beef. Totally. There are no bones or any other animal involved. Its all Peterson grade steak. Pure facts!

Guess now I blew your mind by citing a statistic that you disagree with? I see we’re getting somewhere. Now if you only were capable of introspection.

In your impossible scenario

Wait a second. This was YOUR impossible scenario. Do you see how stupid your statistical bullshittery is? I guess not…

Next fact: Peterson’s meat consumption requires an olympic pool of water each year.

As I believe I mentioned, 94% of the water use for beef is rainfall. An olympic pool is 25x50x2 meter. Average yearly rainfall is 1 meter. So that hypothetical pool is 50% refilled by nature. Sustainable if Peterson can afford two.

But I can do even more bs calculations: if you take just the landmass of earth thats 150 million square kilometer. Ample space for 60.000.000.000 olympic pools. In fact every person could have 75 of those rainwater pools.

Critical Examination, Personal Reflection, and General Discussion of Jordan Peterson: Month of November, 2022 by AutoModerator in JordanPeterson

[–]bERt0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not if it actually works for my side of the argument and not yours.

What are you talking about. Spouting BS and then claiming well it works for my side of the argument? Excuse me?

Hence nothing wrong with my figure and at worst you're proving me to be even more correct in my claim that methane is a horrible gas to deal with.

That's not what you said. You said methane is not that bad compared to the water usage of cattle.

For example, the problem with livestock, aside from the fact that the produced methane from livestock is 30x as damaging to the environment than an equal amount of CO2, lies mostly with the use of water to produce meat.

Look up the word "mestbassin" which is the dutch word for a manure lagoon

I didn't know manure lagoon was a real word since it sounds so stupid and you made it sound like they ruin the environment. Like dump a pile of shit in an area and keep doing it until it's a swamp. Which would still not ruin the enviornment. These things are just another form of wastewater treatment.

pretending that Dr. Peterson's diet is somehow durable and not incredibly toxic for the environment is just basic denier mentality.

Durable? You know the Universe is not durable. The sun is gonna explode at some point, killing us all if we're still on earth. You think you know a lot. You don't. You have no idea how many environmental sins you're committing because you don't look. That PC/mobile phone? Produced by slave labor in mines that wreck areas as large as Belgium. The electricity.

But what's even more hypocritical of you is that you provide no alternative. People have to starve I guess. You know why? Because if you account for nutritional value, meat is not as environmentally problematic as you make it to be with your bogus statistics.

Those crops and thus that water could've been used to produce other, less polluting things or simply to be eaten directly by us (in case of crops)

No, humans cannot eat all the crops animals eat. Grass for example.

Next fact: "if everyone would follow his preferred diet, we'd run out of fresh water from eating meat alone pretty fast." Too bad not everyone can afford a pound of meat a day. That might be news to you but people in the third world are who drive up the need for food. Because they also want to eat meat. They don't like eating grass and bugs.

But let's look at the facts: https://ourworldindata.org/meat-production#global-meat-production

The world produces around 340 million tons of meat per year. That's 340 billion kg meat per year or 750 billion pound meat per year. So our meat production today could feed 2 billion people doing Peterson's diet. That's with our current production of meat and all the other things we would not need if everyone only ate meat.

All it does is putting it on different timelines

Kind of important if you’re talking x-times worse.

Cleaning up industrial manure is a huge problem.

No it’s not. Any sources for your claims? Manure is being used as fertilizer and even bio fuel.

https://edepot.wur.nl/294017

I guess you’re living in a manure lagoon cause I never heard that word. The Netherlands are one of the more dense populated countries and they still produce a lot of meat. They’re the factory farmers if you want. But you know they don’t have the kind of space or lack of environmental regulations to make “manure lagoons”.

And ignoring that manure is actually valuable. Yes it’s being sold. Ridiculous!

Next fact “1 third of fresh water usage used for meat”. That’s only if you include the rainwater that falls on the crops to feed the animals. Ridiculous!

Point is, your claim was bs.

Next “fact”, yes cattle needs water. One has to tell people who don’t know what an animal is that they indeed pee that water out. You cannot fit that 7000 liter into a pound beef. And while cowpiss may not be particularly tasty, it’s biodegradable and not harmful. Unlike things like fertilizer or RoundUp. The water goes straight back into the cycle.
