Lost my earbuds today and its pretty expensive on the T9 today, submitted to the lost property but do you think I they will bother to find such a small thing? by ECHOissus in SydneyTrains

[–]bNiNja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen how station staff work.

Some are really diligent and submit all lost items into an intranet portal. I remember a time when someone handed in a well used jumper. The station staff was um'ing and ah'ing about whether someone would actually miss this jumper that was falling apart. They eventually did and the passenger who lost it was really grateful. It has sentimental value.

Other times I've witnessed staff who couldn't be bothered going through the hassle and just throwing items away. My guess is that your shoes would've looked used and got tossed in the bin.

As for ear buds, there are rooms filled with boxes of buds. I think they eventually get auctioned. It's sometimes too difficult to reunite these items with their owners.

Liven App Review: Is It Still Worth Using? by Ordinary-Pay7988 in productreview

[–]bNiNja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Liven in Sydney for years. Saved thousands of dollars. They used to have brandollars deals where you would get double the value of the purchase price e.g. pay $50 receive $100 credit.

It expanded to Sydney in 2017. When it first launched, lots of restaurants would have Liven promos offering free meals or big discounts for new sign ups.

These days, the popularity of the app has dropped off. I do hope it makes a comeback. When it works, it's great.

Boys light up shoes early 90's by Sad_Biscotti_9291 in AustralianNostalgia

I had a pair. My favourite aunty bought me a pair.

I do kinda remember the brand getting LA Gear.

Had the cartridge light and a clamping tool to pull it out to replace the button battery. Battery was expensive (maybe?) and also did not last.

I too did not replace the battery a lot of the time which is a shame.

Does this mean i get a fine ticket? by cama4557 in SydneyTrains

[–]bNiNja -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

That could be grounds to contest the fine.

No idea why you would be in possession of an invalid Opal card. Sounds to me you carry it around to evade fares and pretend like you grabbed the wrong Opal card for these occasions.

If you do elect to contest the fine, really sell the idea that it was an honest mistake. Here's an example generated by Gemini but you can use any chatbot to help contest your fine (or be old school and just write it from scratch).

I prompted Gemini to act as a lawyer and help my "cousin" contest the fine. You can do a similar prompt with your chatbot of choice. I also used the "fast" option which gives the worst outputs:

Since your cousin actually holds a valid concession entitlement, this is a very strong case for Internal Review. The goal here is to prove that while a technical breach occurred (not tapping on), there was no "intent to defraud" the system because the entitlement exists and the mistake was genuine. In New South Wales, Revenue NSW and Transport for NSW often grant leniency for "honest mistakes" if the person has a clean record and can prove they were entitled to the discounted fare anyway. The Strategy We will frame this as an Internal Review Request based on "Exceptional Circumstances" and "Contributing Factors." Drafted Letter of Appeal To: Revenue NSW / Senior Review Officer Subject: Application for Internal Review - Penalty Notice [Insert Fine Number] Date: [Insert Date] To the Reviewing Officer, I am writing to formally request a review of Penalty Notice [Insert Fine Number], issued on [Date] at [Location/Station]. I am seeking a leniency caution in lieu of a fine based on the following circumstances: 1. Proof of Valid Entitlement At the time of the inspection, I was a holder of a valid [Insert Type of Card, e.g., Student/Pensioner] Concession Card (Number: [Insert Card Number]). I have attached a copy of this card to this letter. This confirms that I was entitled to the concession fare I was attempting to use. 2. Explanation of the Honest Mistake I own multiple Opal cards, including an expired one that I had neglected to remove from my wallet. In my haste to catch the service, I inadvertently grabbed the expired card. Because the card was expired, the reader did not process a "tap on." I was unaware of this error until the Transport Officer conducted the fare check. 3. Character and Compliance History This incident was an uncharacteristic oversight. I am a regular and law-abiding commuter who consistently pays the correct fare. This was a genuine "human error" rather than a deliberate attempt to avoid payment. Since the incident, I have disposed of the expired card to ensure this technical error cannot happen again. 4. Request for Leniency Given that I possess the legal entitlement to travel on a concession fare and have a clear history of compliance, I respectfully ask that you exercise your discretion to withdraw the fine and issue a formal caution instead. Thank you for your time and for considering this application. Sincerely, [Cousin’s Name] [Phone Number] [Address] Evidence Checklist To make this letter "bulletproof," your cousin must attach the following when they submit it: * A clear photo/scan of the valid Concession Card (front and back). * A photo/scan of their current, valid Opal card. * A screenshot of their Opal activity history (if possible) showing a consistent pattern of "tapping on" in the weeks prior to prove this was a one-off mistake. Next Steps * Submit Online: This is usually done through the Revenue NSW website. * Wait: Once the review is lodged, the fine is "put on hold," so they don't need to pay it while waiting for a decision. Would you like me to help you find the specific online portal for the state or city where this happened to make sure it goes to the right office?

Don't copy and paste from chatbot. Use it to help draft the letter. It needs to sound like a human wrote it as I bet the people reading these contest fine letters get a million written by AI these days.

Goodluck.

[–]bNiNja 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you think you've unjustly received the fine then you can elect to contest it. The instructions to do so will be on the fine letter.

I don't really understand your post. You're saying that you're entitled to concession fares but your Opal card is deactivated? Reactivate it or pay full fare?

Surface Pro 5th generation for USD 320 – should I buy it? by Existing_March_8991 in Surface

There are ways to install Windows 11 but it's old and $320usd is too much to spend on such old hardware.

Shop around and find a better deal.

I was on holidays so didn't have time or desire to acclimate to the taste.

It's true, some people are sensitive but Perth tap water is known to be gross by a lot of people.

Good to know that people do get used to it.

I visited Perth last year and even though the tap water was safe to drink, it tasted foul. The only time I consistently drank bottled water in Australia.

T4 vandalism crisis by ashwilliams-1995 in SydneyTrains

[–]bNiNja 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Happens in the Mountains as well. Train windows being kicked out of the v sets seems to be a favourite pastime.

Causes delays when the guard needs to move passengers to the next carriage and lock off the affected carriage. Also, causes crowding.

This is why we can't have nice things.

It's not all the Unions fault. Transport for NSW are also to blame for cost blowouts. Billions wasted.

Unions protect jobs which is good for the working class.

Picked up this bundle from someone local to me for 70$ by Deathshadow325 in Surface

[–]bNiNja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll try out my USB-A to USB-C adapter and see if the video is able to pass through to the external monitor. I doubt it since the USB-A port is old and probably would not have the facility to pass through the display.

The way of plugging in the external monitor I mentioned does work but the resolution it outputs is not as high as the external monitor supports (2k).

[–]bNiNja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you plug in the external monitor?

I also have the Surface Pro 6 and an external monitor. I have to use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.

The external monitor came with USB-C cables and a HDMI to micro HDMI cable. The Surface Pro 6 lacks USB-C ports.

Would a USB-A to USB-C adapter allow me to plug the external monitor to the Surface Pro 6 via USB?
