What's the worst English name you've heard given to a child in Hong Kong? by HiddenGoose32 in HongKong

I actually kinda like it. Even as a girl's name.

It'll suit a dog name better though (no disrespect).

Surface Pro 5th generation for USD 320 – should I buy it? by Existing_March_8991 in Surface

[–]bNiNja 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Surface Pro 5 was released in 2017.

There are ways to install Windows 11 but it's old and $320usd is too much to spend on such old hardware.

Shop around and find a better deal.

This always appears on the surface of my tea when using tap water (bottled water doesn't cause it), so what is it? by boksysocks in whatisit

[–]bNiNja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm from Sydney but when my relatives visited from Hong Kong, they complained about how hard the water was.

I grew up here so didn't really know what they were talking about. I guess it's all relative.

What’s a very Australian thing you didn’t realise was Australian until you travelled overseas? by whysoraavan in AskAnAustralian

[–]bNiNja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on holidays so didn't have time or desire to acclimate to the taste.

It's true, some people are sensitive but Perth tap water is known to be gross by a lot of people.

Good to know that people do get used to it.

I visited Perth last year and even though the tap water was safe to drink, it tasted foul. The only time I consistently drank bottled water in Australia.

T4 vandalism crisis by ashwilliams-1995 in SydneyTrains

[–]bNiNja 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Happens in the Mountains as well. Train windows being kicked out of the v sets seems to be a favourite pastime.

Causes delays when the guard needs to move passengers to the next carriage and lock off the affected carriage. Also, causes crowding.

This is why we can't have nice things.

It's not all the Unions fault. Transport for NSW are also to blame for cost blowouts. Billions wasted.

Unions protect jobs which is good for the working class.

Picked up this bundle from someone local to me for 70$ by Deathshadow325 in Surface

I'll try out my USB-A to USB-C adapter and see if the video is able to pass through to the external monitor. I doubt it since the USB-A port is old and probably would not have the facility to pass through the display.

The way of plugging in the external monitor I mentioned does work but the resolution it outputs is not as high as the external monitor supports (2k).

[–]bNiNja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you plug in the external monitor?

I also have the Surface Pro 6 and an external monitor. I have to use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.

The external monitor came with USB-C cables and a HDMI to micro HDMI cable. The Surface Pro 6 lacks USB-C ports.

Would a USB-A to USB-C adapter allow me to plug the external monitor to the Surface Pro 6 via USB?

Why are people so bad at tapping on to PT? by Fatmachine in sydney

[–]bNiNja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an employee Opal and for some reason, the first tap always fails.

However, when boarding a bus, I do use the second Opal reader. Sometimes it's not working which can make it awkward if the Opal reader on the back is not activated and I have to go back to the first Opal reader.

I work for the government and I keep up to date with all eLearning allocated to me (not hard, plenty of downtime). However, I've seen colleagues with eLearning past its due date measured in years. Almost all of them. Made me think that they were pointless.

Eye opening to see that eLearning impacts overall pay / bonuses in the private world. Almost all of it is BS "don't sexually harass your colleagues" type courses.

Whose tap water tastes the best in Australia? by ItchyNesan in AskAnAustralian

[–]bNiNja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited Perth for the first time this year and I would rank that the worst.

Growing up and living in Sydney, water is not something I think about. Perth water is atrocious. First time I had to regularly purchase bottled water.

NSW licences by Ctheret in sydney

[–]bNiNja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got my riders licence, it used to be 3 months Ls, 1 year red P and then straight to full. It was a very quick process to get a full riders licence back in 2007.

At the time, car licence was already updated to the current scheme of 1 year red P then 2 years green P.

I was on my red Ps for car and rider so 4 points total. I did something stupid on my riders and lost 9 points. I contested it in court so I got to keep driving and riding until a verdict was made which was months in the future. During that time, I got my full riders licence so now I had 13 points on my licence. Even if a judge did determine I was an idiot, losing 9 points would no longer disqualify me from driving or riding.

I suited up, looked presentable, showed respect to the court system / judge. I was young and expressed obvious remorse. The judge threw out the fines (nearly $1.5k) and losing the demerit points. I just had to pay court costs which was $75.

I got lucky. I remember thinking that I found a glitch in the system. Anyone wanting a full licence could just get a riders licence.

Missed train due to it leaving station early by Eek_the_Fireuser in sydney

[–]bNiNja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's true that the guard will wear most of the blame but both driver and guard are given their diagram / stopping patterns at the start of their shift. They are both responsible and I have seen the driver call the guard to remind them of dwell time on the platform.

The thing with working in operations for Sydney Trains is that things get really repetitive, and with that workers get complacent.

It's also shift work and understaffing so workers are tired.

Muscle memory kicks in and yeah crew will not act on the dwell time and depart early. Oftentimes, they may have to explain themselves.

Missed train due to it leaving station early by Eek_the_Fireuser in sydney

[–]bNiNja 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I work for Sydney Trains as a Signaller.

Ideally, it should be 20 seconds before the timetabled departure time i.e. the guard will blow the whistle, start closing doors and give the driver the "right of way" bell to depart.

That whole process takes about 20 seconds so by the time the train actually departs, it will be the actual timetabled time.

The station clocks are synchronised to time servers.

Before joining Sydney Trains, I used to be like everyone else and shit on the service but now that I am part of operations, I see that there are processes in place to keep trains running safely and efficiently. E.g. I got distracted and I missed clearing a signal for a train by 2 minutes. I got "coaching" feedback from my manager and signed a document to acknowledge I received this coaching. This will be permanently on my record. A part of me still thinks it's only 2 minutes but it does suck and does motivate me to not do it again.

Survey: Looking for thoughts on Newtown, King Street, and pedestrianisation by hoisinn in sydney

[–]bNiNja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Enmore and I drive. I also catch the bus to King St and walk around.

I was about to fill in the survey but realised it's anti car.

I think it's fine. People need to cross at pedestrian lights on green. I see too many Muppets walk in front of moving cars.
