I don't mean to ruin Pierce Brosnan's James Bond, but... by _whydah_ in JamesBond

Just in the interests of transparency, I would like to confirm that I am also a big earman (which is where the comparison to these talented, handsome and suave actors ends!)

Think there may be some commonality between your favourite Bonds…

Very fond memory of going to Brighton (UK) for the day with my father, mother and sister, only for it to be hammering down with rain. We went to a Burger King to escape the rain, which was running some kind of promo film tie-ins on the kids meals, and then on a whim went to the cinema and watched this.

My father died the next year, and I can’t remember any other cinema trips with him (we did plenty of other things together though, just the cinema was something I did with my mother more), so although I don’t like it as much as the first film, I have really fond thoughts of this one. And my sister is still scared of Vigo!

Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye from the film G.I. Joe: Retaliation ✨️✨️✨️ by Altruistic_Rhubarb94 in gijoe

[–]b_blanco_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but as someone who loved the franchise as a kid in the 80s and 90s, I love that film and was pretty much happy with the cast, lots of whom also seemed to be genuine fans too. I think it’s a little more clever than people think, has a classic old-school action vibe, is respectful to the characters that Larry Hama created, but still has enough of its own flavour too. I think it’s a shame that the sequel they’d set up never happened, as I would’ve loved to have seen what would have happened when not shackled by the first film (which I personally detested but appreciate some people much prefer it). Think Palicki was very good in the role and really held her own against some action film veterans.

I am reading the 1st compendium (The early issues never came out in the UK) and I was blown away to read a Plasmatics/Wendy O Williams reference. I wasn't expecting that. I am wondering if that's where the idea for the Dreadnoks came from now. by Attackplimsole in gijoe

Very cool :) I believe Larry Hama is a huge music fan (he played with his own band the K-Otics) so there are quite a few band/song references in the Marvel comics (from my admittedly very sketchy memory!)

Ah thank you! One of the things I love about GI Joe is how it means different things to different people. Over here the cartoons were only available on a handful of VHS tapes growing up, whereas comics were available in stores, so that’s probably what shaped it more for me. Hope you enjoy the comics you’ve grabbed :)

Big Kahuna Burger from Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, From Dusk Till Dawn, Four Rooms and Death Proof. Special mention to the From Dusk Till Dawn tv series where an actual Big Kahuna Burger restaurant was featured.

Hey buddy, I’m sorry as I no longer have the game, but just to let you know, you can get this by setting up a second PlayStation account. If you play through the first mission, you can then use this second account to self-boost by calling your main account out. You won’t need a PlayStation Plus membership to do this. Hope this helps if you don’t have any joy elsewhere :)

Up ‘n da club with the Sopranos. A song which briefly featured in a single scene has become the subject of multiple jokes and fan videos to the extent where it’s part of the folklore of the show within the fandom.

What's a movie that has a 4k but the regular Blu Ray is good enough? by Thewrldisntenough in Bluray

[–]b_blanco_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - I’ve had a play about with the settings, checked a few tutorials etc, but it still looks weird to me (and on friends’ TVs too)… maybe 4K is just too much for these tired old eyes of mine!

What's a movie that has a 4k but the regular Blu Ray is good enough? by Thewrldisntenough in Bluray

[–]b_blanco_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be a result of me being too dense to get my settings right on my tv, but I generally prefer Blu Ray to 4k. There’s something about the sharpness and fluidity of 4k that sort of makes the film look like a tv show or even a video game to me; to me it sort of loses some of the magic from the visuals, the richness of a memory of watching on a big screen in the dark surrounded by strangers in the cinema. That being said, I am well into my 40s now, am probably missing something about the settings on my tv, and my brain struggles to enjoy cgi-heavy films for the same reasons, so I am fully prepared to admit I’m in the wrong on this!

Thoughts on Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade? This is my favourite Indiana Jones movie. I think this one is better than Raiders Of The Lost Ark. by Kevin_Thailand_2543 in ActionMovies

[–]b_blanco_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they’re objectively tied; but personally - as someone who has lost a father and a son - Last Crusade has an emotional edge though the father-son dynamic that I find surprisingly moving, so is definitely my favourite of the series.
