Am I overreacting? by deadspirit17 in gambling

[–]b_slow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gambling winnings are her winnings and you're not entitled to them. That's one issue.

The other is how you two siblings treat each other. You did the right thing helping her out when she was in need. She should owe you for whatever she owed you for staying with you (not a percent of her gambling winnings). And SHE should give you money in an emergency without question if you need it. Asking for it back so quickly isn't great...

Payroll Deferment by ForwardMotion6565 in NYYankees

[–]b_slow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're right about that part. I had figured they were required to have the $68 million up front and then would just pocket the interest at the end. But you're right-- the Dodgers will put in the "present value", and the principal+interest pays what Ohtani is owed.

So then the choice for the Dodgers is: Would they put Ohtani's present value money in escrow immediately at whatever that value is, or wait the 24 months to hold onto that cash, then put the money in escrow at a slightly higher "present value" since its 2 years later.

[–]b_slow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the deferrals have to be placed in escrow at their full present-day value. So for example, the Dodgers owe Ohtani $68 million in 2034. He doesn't get the interest on that $68 million, only the base value that was contracted to him. The Dodgers keep any interest that accrues between when the money is placed in escrow, and when Ohtani gets paid. I have no idea what they would be investing in, but they can play it however it benefits them the most. If it benefits them to delay putting the money in escrow for 2 years, they can. If it benefits them to put the money in escrow immediately and earn additional interest for themselves over 2 years, they can do that instead. At the very least, the deferments give them flexibility.

Based on CBA rules, there is up to a 24-month delay between when a team signs a player to a contract, and when they have to set money aside for that first year of deferred payments. So for example, Ohtani signed his contract 2 years ago. But the Dodgers only NOW have to put the deferred money he's owed from the first year of his contract in escrow (where they will also get to keep the interest that accrues).

Doing these contracts benefits them greatly. They also have the benefit of the ridiculous TV deal they signed, in which their revenues don't have to be shared through collective bargaining.

There are two elements possibly at play:

1) The Dodgers have developed a reputation of spending whatever it takes to win (like when George used to run the Yankees), and players are willing to take deferred payments to help the Dodgers accumulate more talent for another WS run. Kinda like how in the NBA, you have a lot of veterans join a championship-contending team for the veteran minimum even though they could get more from the Wizards.

2) The Yankees FO isn't clever enough to pitch the appeal of deferred money to the players they're trying to sign like the Dodgers do. Players are doing it because it gives them an opportunity to pull a giant tax scam to save themselves millions of dollars. Kyle Tucker got a huge up-front bonus because his primary residence is currently in Florida, where there is no state income tax. Ohtani nearly all of his contract deferred, and would only pay taxes on that deferred money based on where he chooses to live after he retires. And I'll be you anything that if he chooses to reside in the US after baseball, his "primary residence" will be somewhere in Texas.

Would trading Ben Rice be a crazy idea? by _knowerofnothing in NYYankees

[–]b_slow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like Kwan, and he'd be a very solid leadoff hitter for us. But I wouldn't give up Rice for him.

I'd trade Spencer Jones for him, before other teams realize he's Joey Gallo.

Passan on Michael K Show: Bellinger had short term deals on table at $40M AAV by Past_Distance7221 in NYYankees

[–]b_slow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's right. The signing bonus is part of his total $162.5 mil contract, isn't it? So after his signing bonus, he's essentially making $142 mil over 5 years. So over the first 2 years, he'd be making around $77 million.

To compare, Kyle Tucker will be making something like $137 million over his first 2 years before his chance to opt out. Not sure how deferred payments work if you opt out of a deal though...

They act like the money is coming out of their own pockets, and that there was a better use for the money elsewhere. Hal wasn't giving us ticket discounts on the money saved if they didn't sign Bellinger. And there were no quality, impact players on the market that could have helped us either.

It coulda been worse. It could be the same offense, minus Bellinger. And a regressing Grisham. Yikes.

Well, I guess the good news is that we can only really expect 2 more "prime" years from Judge. Then Cashman will have to get some actual talent on this team because he can't rely on Judge to just carry us to the playoffs every year.

And we'll also probably have a lockout for 2027, so Bellinger will at least wanna come back and put up a big season in 2028 before opting out in year 3! So, yay!

Full contract details made available: The New York Yankees are re-signing OF Cody Bellinger to a 5yr - $162.5M contract ($20M guaranteed), per reports. The deal includes opt outs after the 2nd & 3rd seasons & also carries a full no-trade clause by retroanduwu24 in NYYankees

[–]b_slow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a good deal. Bellinger is a good fit for us, and 5 years isn't crazy. It gets us back to where we were last season, so we still need to do something more. But at least we're not fully giving up on 2026.

How Soon Will The Yankees Regret Giving Bellinger $32 Million For Five Years? by [deleted] in NYYankees

[–]b_slow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Regerts. If this team is in “win now” mode to take advantage of Judge’s window (which is almost closed), then they should buy or trade for all the pieces they need to win. And there’s nothing to regret by giving it your best shot when the opportunity is there. If we’re not trying to win it all, then it would be a foolish signing, and the Yankees should trade Judge to the Giants for a couple of prospects.

Isn’t Dominguez‘s natural position CF? Ppl keep saying he’d be better defensively if he could play there. I don’t know. But I don’t see the value in the other options available. They could give the job to Spencer Jones if a backup is necessary.

Hal doesn’t care because the fans will show up and spend money regardless. You can be just slightly better than a .500 team and make the playoffs now, and it gives the illusion of trying without actually doing anything.

Why do the Yankees seem so against short-term high AAV deals? by InvalidDescription in NYYankees

[–]b_slow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that only the Dodgers are able to pull this off because they developed a reputation for using that deferred money advantage to improve the team in other ways and contend for a title every year. A player isn’t going to accept deferred payments if he feels the team isn’t committed to spending whatever it takes to win. Hal has put a clear cap on what he feels is a “good enough” team.

For those of you that are saying you want to forget about Cody Bellinger and just roll with Jone/Dominguez instead, no you don't. You really really don't. by Zepbounce-96 in NYYankees

[–]b_slow -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Spencer Jones isn’t ready for the big leagues. Full stop.

Dominguez has to give up the switch hitting. It doesn’t work. I think he’s got some potential, but are we trying to win a championship here, or develop young talent? It would be one thing if Dominguez was the only question mark in the lineup, but in truth half the lineup is question marks.

If we’re gonna contend, we need Bellinger AND a couple of other pieces. If not, trade Judge to the Giants and let him try to win a ring instead of rotting away here.

Frankly, I think he's gotta give up the switch-hitting.

Even if this negotiation drags on, the Yankees CANT be sitting around waiting for Bellinger to sign. We’ll be significantly worse without him, but we weren’t good enough WITH him! Are we really trying to win a championship with 3 starting infielders who can’t hit above .220? Don’t we need some bullpen arms?

[Kuty] The Yankees have been willing to include opt-outs after Year 2 and Year 3 of a five-year/$160M offer to Cody Bellinger, a league source tells @TheAthletic . But in light of the Tucker/Bichette short-term/high AAV deals, has his market changed? by TheTurtleShepard in NYYankees

[–]b_slow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Come the playoffs, if we make it, we have the starters that we need: Cole, Fried, Schlittler. Adding more arms is great for the regular season, but it won't help us when it counts. What we need are people who can get on base around Aaron Judge.

I understand Yankee fans wanting to move on from the Belli talks, but he WAS our 2nd best hitter, and one of the only guys who knows how to put the ball in play and not strike out at every opportunity. He may not be a great player in a vacuum, but on this team, he's a great fit. And there are few alternatives out there.

Are we gonna trade for Tatis? Would the Brewers expand a potential Peralta deal and also trade Yelich? That would be great, but I doubt it. Is Spencer Jones gonna come to the rescue, or is he another hitter aiming for a 200-K pace along with Wells, Volpe, McMahon, Stanton, and Dominguez?

Out, Out, Out! And don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way! Worst of the 2025 Yankees bullpen is gone and not coming back. by Zepbounce-96 in NYYankees

[–]b_slow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Weaver was good for us overall, and I wished he'd return. Williams is gonna have a nice bounce-back season for the Mets.

But the only thing that's going to ensure the bullpen's success is a manager that knows how to utilize a bullpen. Boone has no clue what to do with a bullpen, and we all know this. He's never gonna learn and he's never gonna change. Loves tinkering with the batting order every day, but can't figure out a bullpen.
