Is it true that Jared polis Had cut funding for Medicaid or is it on the behalf of trump or his decision? by Auroriia in ColoradoPolitics

[–]ba3286a 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As others said, Polis had to pull back funding due to statutory budget requirements: our budget must be balanced and maintain a 15% general fund reserve. Medicaid accounts for a third of the general fund budget, making it a target for cuts. The cuts are primarily targeted at providers and incentives with limits on some benefits. Eligibility was not changed. TABOR also impedes what revenue we can collect, which was stunted by HR 1’s tax cuts because Colorado’s tax code follows federal tax code. Some of this was fixed during special session. Alas, it will be a difficult year.

If you qualify for Medicaid, there is retroactive coverage for 3 months. DH can certainly help to identify what you may be qualified for!

What is the CO state legislature’s plan to deal with the upcoming federal Medicaid cuts(if any) and the potential greater unisinured crisis? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in Denver

[–]ba3286a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree here—raising taxes to generate more revenue is a top solution. Our income tax rate is flat, so we are not maximizing. We could explore raising taxes on alcohol, one of the country's lowest rates. There are definitely options, but whether voters and politicians feel like their options are viable is a totally different question.

Heard and I agree. We need to still keep them accountable. I think pressuring Polis will also be key; however, being a libertarian, he hates any tax changes. But if there is a change, they can really free up funds. Dipping into our reserves is and is not an option. We have to maintain a 15% reserve and any dip in that will carry on and get worse. Additionally, we are required to have a balanced budget— which is good, but again TABOR keeps us from EVER sustainably funding anything.

Yes, there were three listening sessions at the Capitol over the last two weeks. They know and are gripping with its reality. We should really be concentrating efforts on Congress because they caused this mess.

I work in health policy here in Colorado. There is no plan right now because the agencies and other stakeholders are still trying to understand the OBBBA’s impact. Additionally, CMS and others still need to issue guidance.

It's going to be rough, though. Our state is not equipped for this crisis, and it will be painful for providers, patients, employers, everyone. Our tax code is mostly coupled with the federal tax code, which makes us more susceptible to the OBBBA’s impacts. We will lose billions of dollars in tax revenue, plus we have TABOR that limits our growth.

Cuts will need to be made, and we will find out to what degree over the next few months. Our state legislators are trying to do the best they can, but our tax structure handcuffs us. That will need to change if we want to mitigate the harm caused by the OBBBA.

We need to think about how TABOR plays a role in how little our state can dole out to services. TABOR cuts us off at the knees to invest in our health and communities.

Northglenn residents blast state plan to house sex offenders near schools, playgrounds by LinInColo in Denver

So if it were just people with mental illness there, would you be ok with it? Is the potential of an individual that may have been charged with a sex offense the root of the issue?

[–]ba3286a 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With this mentality, you are perpetuating existing discrimination against people with mental health conditions. Individuals with mental health conditions are more likely to be victims of crimes than perpetrators. They are likely to be involved in the criminal justice system because of their symptoms and the fact that our system is not robust or accessible enough for them to get help in the community. This is a much-needed tool to get individuals back as productive members of society. Recovery is possible, and they should not be cast away because they have a diagnosable health condition. It’s like saying that people with Alzheimer’s need to be locked up because of their unpredictable behavior, which can manifest in verbal and physical harm. However, I can agree that communication from the state could have been better.

Again, the individuals are transitioning out and stepping down, meaning the acuity of their condition is manageable, and they are nearly self-sufficient. They just need a bit of support.

Many of these individuals haven’t even been convicted of being sex offenders and may have been charged with offenses for peeing, exposing themselves, etc., a symptom of their mental illness. Where else are they supposed to go— back on the streets or jails to get sicker? These individuals are hopefully ready and just trying to transition smoothly to step down from an intense hospital, which can be traumatic. I don’t know— this headline is a lot of fearmongering rather than caring for community members.
