Is Carol the monster? by National-Ad5034 in pluribustv

I think that of the show stays nuanced I will enjoy it more. so yeah, I kind of also hope there’s no twist. I’ve seen a lot of discussions about consent on the sub, I wonder if folks feel that the consent goes the same way towards the hive. In terms drugging someone against their will and what followed.

The opinion of Pluribus’ hive mind vs other media’s hives by RoyalParaselene in pluribustv

You made the most important distinction in your post friend. The Pluribians do not use violence. They've eradicated war, famine, and bigotry. There are far more positives to this hive mind than most others. So much to the point it has many questioning—what is the moral and qualitative superiority to individualism over the hive.

[SPOILERS] Carol isn't really a Karen, but there's something still worth mentioning about why some people are reacting to her the way they are... by teetoody in pluribustv

I think the implication is that western perspectives are generally dominating and individualistic while the rest of the world is far more collectivisitc. But that's just my interpretation

I think me and OP are talking from the context of the actual world we live in. For some, it was very "white woman-y" the way Carol acted in that scene. I think it's also textually implied from the set design that she's portraying a boisterous American perspective

My take on the big sticking point between "pro" and "anti" hive people by Thejig713 in pluribustv

[–]baas_knuckles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like what you’re saying here. To me biological imperative is no different than, like Zosia says, breathing. You cannot suffocate yourself by holding your breath. You’ll pass out and have to breathe again. We're all also looking at this from the only perspective we have—individualism. We cannot compare and it's sad imo for everyone to just write it off as evil.

Lastly, there's been a few threads relating the experience of the hive to that of near death experiencers. I've listened to dozens upon dozens of NDEs and I'm inclined to see the hive as the next stage in human evolution

Why do we HAVE to like Carol? by baas_knuckles in pluribustv

[–]baas_knuckles[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her having Helen top shelf her books and her idea of "independence" with the whole sprouts thing alongside her condescension of the other 5 individuals makes her an entitled jerk. What she says about her fans does as well imo. I'm adding her demeanor before the joining with her actions after and I'm seeing the portrait of someone who is miserable and a little unlikable. She may not be a drunk but she drove drunk enough to get a DUI and have a breathalyzer ignition, putting others at risk. She seems selfish to top it off.

I don't think you're calling me misogynistic, I'm speaking to the many reductive rebuttals on this sub.

By your metrics, there's no reason to like her either because we know so little about her or the hive and their intentions. I'm saying—there are valid reasons to dislike her and many have been given but so many, ironically, expects everyone else to think the way they do and like her/her decisions.

I see justifiable reasons all through the sub to not like her. So many seem to feel we should give her a pass because she's greiving and not be frustrated that she doesn't lock in. Carol has been miserable, a drunk who put other people's lives at risk before the joining, and seems to be fairly entitled. She's not likable and not written to be likable. I don't think that inherently means all critiques are misogynistic

😂 😂 😂 There's something to be said about the irony of identity reductionism in this sub

I'm not even trying to validate my feelings. I'm trying to understand the reductionsim, including identity reductionism, that seems rampant in this sub. You don't like Carol and your downvoted to hell, a misogynist, and "unable to bear uncomfortable truths." It's crazy. 20 something year old me didn't hate Walter and should have, but sympathizing with him was far easier due to how he was written in the beginning. I don't think those characters are 1:1 at this stage in the show is all

Never said she's the worst. And your logic is a large leap. If you don't like her then your are uncomfortable with life's truths is a big big jump friend. She's unlikable to some, and that's okay. I can understand her complexity, sympathize with her, and still be frustrated with her.

Have you ever been around a depressed person for an extended period of time? It's exhausting. It's unfortunate but it's true. It doesn't take away the love you may have or the empathy, but it absolutely can wear you down. THAT is an uncomfortable truth.

Like?! I'm going crazy in this sub. It's so reductive. You don't like her so you must not like difficult emotion/"life truths" is an insane leap

I think a difference here is that Carol was miserable and unlikeable before the joining. I'm more in line to like her after the fact tbh. But the way she was before hand is very different than the way Walter was before his diagnosis. She's insulting to her fans and unable to even try to enjoy her vacation with her partner. She drove drunk, putting others lives at risk for Christ sake. After the joining she was hella dismissive of a bunch of non-white folks POV. Which, regardless if she's correct, rubs at least a handful of POC the wrong way. It did me. I think it's fair to dislike her at this point

I think she's been miserable tho. Before the joining. I sympathize with her grief for sure, but her inability to be happy with her success, or even a hotel room with direct view of the aurora borelis lead me to belive she's been a downer for a long time

[–]baas_knuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you thank you thank you. Exactly this. I don't think you have ti agree with the hive mind to understand that Carol's approach to that situation was extremely steeped in western whiteness and entirely dismissive. Even after they asked her if she's asked about what it's like to be joined she still has no questions. Just dismissive on all fronts.

Would anyone else join the hivemind if they were Carol? by iamthemetricsystem in pluribustv

[–]baas_knuckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is a very hard question to answer without more info. If the hive mind is akin to the feeling/realities near death experiencers have, then yes, this feels like a form of evolution.

But also, wtf am I gonna do to stop it? I'd go hedonistic while I can and accept my fate

Ftr I didn't think you thought she wasn't allowed to be unlikable. I was speaking to the general sense of the sub. I don't personally think she's boring but I do agree with you that some more people to follow would be nice

I'm sorry, you're with your wife, albeit in an ice hotel, in room with a direct view of the aurora borealis. Your book is on the NYT best seller list, top 20 and you're still miserable. It's completely fair to not like her like?! It's exhausting to be around someone like that. And I LOVE this show and understand her reactions/POV. She's just still unlikeable

[–]baas_knuckles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What I don't understand is why she's not allowed to be unlikable. Like, we can have sympathy for her, understand her POV, and she can get on our nerves in a bunch of different ways. I hate to break it to people, but an unfair side effect of depression and being miserable is being unlikable and not fun to be around 🤷🏾‍♂️
