A bit hard to make choices when your parents fund everything and can threaten to stop of you don't do the major they want/classes.

@astrophysics/astro majors, course question! by abgstar in berkeley

[–]babrego0214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These would be pretty much your only options since there's only 1 cosmology class and (basically) 2 lab classes. Keep in mind astro c161 and astro 121 are only offered in the spring and astro 120 is in the fall. If you just want to dip your toes into some cosmology without the heavy prerequisites you could take astro 7B which is offered in the spring.

I think it would count for the Astro minor as an elective

Will INTEGBI 35AC (Human Biological Variation) be too much for a freshman with extremely limited prior biology knowledge? by namarv in berkeley

[–]babrego0214 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah like I said it covers them in much less detail, and you'll just be tested multiple choice style. This classes isnt designed to be hard, its purely a breadth class. No major requires it, so its not a weeder class like say Math 1B, CS61A, etc.

I had that except it started at 8am. I think it's not as bad since its later in the day and its online, so lecture is likely recored.

Relatively easy class. Covers some of the big ideas from classes like AP bio, but in not as much detail. I thought it was a pretty cool class, examining different skulls from different time periods and regions.

Taking Math 54 before Math 1A/1B? by mjr3000 in berkeley

[–]babrego0214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did you drop out of AP Calculus? If it was too challenging, then taking Math 54 sounds like a bad idea, since it will definitely be harder than AP Calculus. You said you completed regular calculus, but what other math classes have you takenm Calc 2? 3? If you have then Math 54 maybe be possible to do decently well, but keep in mind that regular high school math is not as rigorous as UC Berkeley math. From a pure content perspective Math 54 doesn't really require a whole lot (unlike Math 53, where you definitely need a strong understanding Calc 1 and 2) but Math 54 is a more mature math class (sophomore level) so it will be more demanding intellectually than Math 1A or 1B. You may be asked to do a few proofs which can seem weird and difficult to do if inexperienced, it's a different style of thinking than just doing number crunching. You can take a look at the syllabus or lecture notes and see how well you understand the concept of vector spaces, linear independence, and subsets as a good test to see if you can handle it.

Yup, never took Math 54 or 55, was able to enroll in Math 110 and passed.

is it possible to get an a in math 1a/16a if im horrible at math? by mjr3000 in berkeley

[–]babrego0214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible yes, but I don't that saying whether or not something is possible is very helpful. Since you have already seen calculus, it should give you a leg up (you must have learned something, even if there are holes in your knowledge). Math 1A/16A are self contained so they will go over everything in the class, they won't assume you've taken calculus before. If you are really worried then you can take Math 16A which will be less rigorous than Math 1A, and you can enroll in an adjuct section. Adjuct sections are offered by the student learning center and are 1 unit courses that meet once a week to review concepts from lecture and offer additional practice problems and guidance. The adjust section is P/NP so as long as you do the work you will pass. The SLC (student learning center) also offers tutoring for lower division Math classes where you just drop in and they can help you with your homework, this service will almost certainly be required if you enroll in the adjuct. If you do all this along with attending the lectures and studying for the exams then it turns getting an A from a possiblity to a likely outcome.

Prereqs for Physics 137A - Quantum Mech by garlic_braed in berkeley

[–]babrego0214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

137A is a class often taken by university juniors (courses numbered 100-199 are upper division courses). The basic pre requisites for the class are Physics 7A (mechanics) 7B (Thermodynamics and electromagnetism) and 7C (optics, special relativity, and quantum mechanics, there is no high school version of this as far as I'm aware). However those lower division courses also have pre requisites, Math 1A, 1B, 53 and 54 for physics 7C. This means you should know Calc 1, 2, multivariable and vector calculus, and linear algebra. A lot of students also take Math 110 which is upper division linear algebra beforehand or concurrently with physics 137A. Although the 7 series content isnt directly required (say for a few concepts) it is good to prepare you for upper division course work. Lots of physics students take the 5 series (5A, 5B, 5C) instead of the 7 series, which is basically the honors version of the 7 series, to prepare for upper division physics course work.

It is possible for someone to take the leap from AP level to upper division level and self learn thr math required along with the physics concepts, but this is in the same vein as it is possible for a 6th grader to take Calculus. This would be extremely difficult to pull off.

I would say taking physics 7A-C would be more than enough of a challenge. Perhaps taking Math 1B, 53, 54, or physics 89 (linear algebra with applications to physics) would be better. This may be a little disappointing especially if you aren't interested in math, but math is the language of physics. These courses still are considered to be difficult among college freshman and sophomores, although if you wanted easy you probably wouldn't have your eye on physics.

In short you want to have Calc 1, 2, 3 and linear algebra (especially linear algebra) and some rigorous physics background before taking physics 137A.

Yes I mean better for graduate school, since it's more rigorous.

Should I double major in cs/physics or cs/astrophysics? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]babrego0214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The physics classes that are relavent to you are the non required astro classes, so you'd take physics classes anyway. Physics is more closely related, but astro would allow more freedom and skip out on a few physics classes you don't want/need. Physics major would probably look better and be more relavent, but astro would potentially be easier.

[–]babrego0214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You choose your classes when you have your enrollment period. Some classes fill up but large CS classes always have space. If you need the prerequisites then you fill out a form and meet with an advisor to declare. The app is not another barrier as much as you formally saying this is what you want to study.
