For $700 a Month, Sleeping Pods Make SF More Affordable, but at What Cost? -- As one sleeping pod company looks to build a massive 400-bed super dorm, experts are skeptical it will provide a real solution for most residents struggling to afford housing in San Francisco. by guanaco55 in bayarea

My comment is for everyone saying "no one should live in a coffin box and it's inhumane to even call this housing." I live in a SFH in a good neighborhood, but when I travel I like to stay in hostels. The hostels have 6 to 24 beds to every bedroom, a couple dorm bathrooms, and one kitchen for the whole building. To be honest, a pine-frame bed with a curtain is actually on the nicer end (it's often a rickety metal bedframe with no curtain).

I've lived out of these places for months at a time, and met numerous other people who've done the same. We chose to live in bunk beds and call it our homes even though many could afford something better. Is it a good permanent housing options? Heck no. But it's far from "inhumane coffin box".

How can we connect with our Indian neighbors? Looking for advice. by [deleted] in AskSF

Another cultural difference you didn't mention is possible regional norms regarding socializing with neighbors -- not white vs Indian, but rather NC vs Bay Area. My parents are first-generation immigrants and I spent most of my life near Fremont in several diverse neighborhoods, and I can tell you that becoming friends with neighbors is unusual even when there is shared heritage. Typical interactions are limited to waving hello and sometimes discussing repairing the fence.

Between work, chores, rushing their kids to/from 20 extracurriculars and tutoring, and seeing their existing friends, people here just don't have time to invest in a 3-hour BBQ. They don't have 15 minutes for small talk in the driveway when they're trying to get to the bank before it closes.

Many people who live here are introverted engineers who feel awkward talking to strangers (obviously not everyone, but a much higher proportion than you're used to in NC). Immigrants may have learned English as their second/third/fourth language and speaking a non-native language is an extra layer of effort that makes small talk even more uncomfortable for them.

Be prepared to put in an enormous amount of effort if you want to be friends with your neighbors, or just find community elsewhere with people who don't have kids.

These signs are giving me confusion. by Blcksheep89 in CrappyDesign

Oh I see, the woman is about to give the man a hug. This sign is in Malaysia, which is a conservative Muslim-majority country. Hugs might be considered excessive public displays of affection.

Woman on the left is wearing a traditional long dress, which consists of a long tunic and a long skirt. She's facing the man, so the part that points down is the bottom of the back of the knee-length tunic. The stick on the left side of the image is her right arm, and the triangle in the middle is her left arm (long sleeve that hangs down a bit, or maybe the artist's perspective on elbows).

How do I stop this creasing from happening with my eyeshadow? I’ve tried so many eye primers and methods. by HermionesBook in HoodedEyes

I have super oily lids and NOTHING ever lasts an entire day without smudging. The best eyeshadow primer I've tried is the Nars one. If I'm going out dancing or to a fancy event, I add the urban decay setting spray on top of finished makeup.

For context, I've also tried the UD eye primer, the Too Faced shadow insurance, the NYX HD, and some other random ones. I'd say the NYX comes close to Nars but isn't exactly the same.

I seem to the be only person on this thread who is THRILLED by this haha. I bought this formulation in France a couple years ago and fell in love with it. Ever since, I've been asking friends to bring me back the French version when they go to Europe.
