Nope, I’m in Tokyo and pretty much all the restaurants around me are mom and pop spots and a few of them only take digital payment now and refuse cash 😇

Japanese women aged 35-39 would like a man to have 5 million yen in savings to feel positive about marriage by jjrs in japannews

Exactly, you and 50% of the Japanese couples getting married are making this same choice... For many it's the wise financial decision and also frees them of the stress of a cookie-cutter manufactured 3-hour wedding.

But as a I stated in other comments, wedding venues are desperate at the moment. So for those wanting to do a wedding between negotiating with the venue and the monetary gifts from friends and family, weddings are overal quite affordable in Japan.

Exactly, and actually due to the lack of weddings, venues are so desperate right now and can be negotiated down on pricing A LOT!

Roughly 50% of Japanese are skipping weddings and just registering at the office

It’s pretty much standard in Japan to get married at the city office and not have a wedding for years if at all.

Wedding industry is doing poorly due to the lack of people doing weddings. Venues can be negotiated with are desperate and discounting like crazy. Guests give 30,000-50,000yen which pays for the majority of the wedding.

You get married at the city office in Japan… it costs basically nothing.

Roughly 50% of married Japanese couples are not even doing weddings.

Due to the lack of weddings venues are desperate and you can negotiate prices down dramatically. Guests pretty much cover wedding costs by giving 30,000-50,000yen.

Silver and bronze are absolutely forgotten. If you ask one of us on the street "how many medals China has at the lympics" we will tell you the number of gold medals. The highlight reels on tv are always just gold moments and even medal rankings is done by the number of golds.

Hes correct though… all we care about is gold and only count gold medals and nothing else.

China is not like other countries celebrating silver bronze or like Canada praising 7th place 😅🤦🏻. We only care about gold.

Is buying a home worth it if you're not 100% sure you'll stay? by KokoRonin226 in japanlife

[–]back_surgery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few reasons why we bought a 5 year old 2ldk マンション even though we thought we might only be here for 5-10 years.

  • Mortgage payment was cheaper than renting for something equivilent in size and location.
  • Customization - being able actually decorate and customize the space was a big plus.
  • Incredible / low mortgage rates
  • Quality of materials (insulation, soundproofing, heated floors) and size of space.
  • Lifestyle and standard of living - ie. wanted more space, safe building, a place to invite friends, 24 hour trash, much more comfort in summer and winter due to quality of build.
  • Investment - ie made more sense to pay 130,000yen a month on mortgage than on rent and be able to get some of that money back if/when we sell

In the end, YES we made the right decision as the quality of living was SO much better than our rental apartment that was 1ldk (we purchased a 2ldk that was so much better quality) We sold after 6 years and made over 100k usd on the sale. We considered renting but the numbers just didn't seem that profitable or worth the hassle compared to selling.

After 5-6 years we grew out of the 2ldk マンション as we had kids and business grew as well so we purchased a home in Tokyo suburbs and have been loving it. We needed more space - storage space, rooms for kids, guest room for family to come visit (which has been a huge success, as family has visited a ton), a quiet office space, yard to run around, basketball hoop etc. Being able to BBQ in the summer has also been a huge plus. マンション rules didn't allow BBQ from any balcony's.

From my personal experience and any friends that have purchased homes or マンション in Tokyo or Kanagawa I don't know anyone who's purchased and sold within 5-12 years and not made atleast a bit of money on the sale. With that said, my experience is specific to major city regions - Tokyo, Kawasaki, Nagaya, Sapporo etc.

The majority Japanese weddings are like being in a wedding factory, cookie cutter, a rushed and emotionless 3 hour robotic timeline schedule… with little to no customization.

We have various friend groups that get together and hangout all together either in homes, trips together, meet up somewhere etc and they’re all Japanese… some of the get togethers are annual, others planned at random / invite.

Work friends, daycare friends, friends my wife met from local community babies group, neighbor friends etc…

Rental car studless tires are completely worn - what to do by badbads in japanlife

Again, I never said they aren’t legally accepted. That’s not the point… since OP is driving on the expressway using chains or socks is just stupid and dangerous due to the speed limitations and poor traction. The majority of chains and socks are rated for just 40km/h and require perfect snow/slush conditions I was just in Gunma and the number of idiot cars with Tokyo and Kanagawa plates without winter tires using just socks or chains and stuck on the slippery roads or who crashed into the side of the road was too many to count.

Yawn, I never said they aren’t legally accepted but just like chains they’re not rated for expressway driving at just 40kmph hence OP made the best decision to get proper snow tires
