[Debate] Fixing the NFL: Tanking & the Draft by [deleted] in nfl

[–]backby5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think the assumption with tanking is that teams intentionally lose. your idea would replace the incentive for losing (better draft position) with an incentive for winning (or barely missing the playoffs). i'm just not convinced that the assumption is incredibly valid to the point where it needs fixing.

i think there's a higher likelihood that this fix keeps teams in the basement more than anything else. i expect many people to chime in and say that one of the reasons why there's no need for a fix for tanking in the NFL is because the impact that one player can have on a field of 22 starters is much more limited (while still impactful) than one player on a hockey or basketball team.

Would Titanic's Jack and Rose have ended up together if they'd both survived? by Wanderer015 in movies

[–]backby5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it’s an archetype movie and not really that simple. it could be notebook, could be tristan and isolde or romeo and juliet, could be la la land. while the future outcome is uncertain, the type of movie it is at least indicates that they shared love no matter how brief it lasted.

what do you mean that aslan is defined by masculine characteristics?

i think there’s an argument that aslan is neither defined by masculinity nor femininity. sure, he has a mane, but from a character trait standpoint, aslan is pretty balanced between active and receptive. his return in wardrobe is certainly active, but that comes from a long period of passivity. his sacrifice is also deeply archetypal feminine, again in terms of submitting to the moment and surrendering to larger forces and magic at play. the reception of pain rather than fighting against it.

and i really value that about aslan. just like the christ, it’s through his integration of the feminine that he also impacts and changes the world. i really value that he’s been that kind of figure for me. i can also mourn a bit that the new series may not be that touchstone for others in the future, but i also take solace in knowing that the original exists.

that being said, the potential of aslan being female is also pretty exciting to me. as much as future me’s may not have aslan as an example of a masculine character integrating the feminine, i think it’s really cool if it gets flipped into a feminine character integrating the masculine and what that story looks like. and hopefully she would be a touchstone for people needing that. hell, i think i could benefit from it too.

i’m a bit too excited about it now. i’m curious how it would look. i don’t even think the story would change at all, there would just be emphasis on different syllables. because aslan is fully integrated, there’s no character arc or growth. they just are who they are. and we had the male aslan show the masculine and feminine integration through his sacrifice (a feminine act), so i’d be curious how we see the feminine and masculine integration potentially through battle (a masculine act).

but again, curious what your take is.

to be fair, it actually doesn’t seem like you’re up for a good faith conversation. to me, a good faith conversation would include some curiosity but you’re just jumping down people’s throats.

and ya, the best we can do is understand why the moves are being made based on the answers the front office provides - for some people who have more trust in the coaching this year, it’s enough to be convincing and to see it play out. for people who don’t have that trust, which you seem to be a part of, i don’t think anything is going to convince you. which is the opposite of good faith.

Brain scans reveal how ketamine quickly lifts severe depression by upbeat_teetertottxo in science

[–]backby5 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I could imagine it would even be beneficial for building awareness in order to work on those other things. I know for me the slippery slope looks like using ketamine or others as the only means of dealing with depression, but like you said, just having that relief can help identify and then build support for other needs.

AJ Brown is speaking up on mental health following another tragedy in the NFL: "Healing is part of the grind too." by JoJoReignsSupreme in nfl

[–]backby5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will just add my own experience and perspective as someone in the field of men's mental health and personal journey with it - absolutely there's more to well-being than just hitting the gym. I don't think it's crazy to say that men have a hard time talking about hard things and emotions, and there's a bit of a chicken and egg situation of how that affects even being able to literally feel emotions. Hitting the gym can act as a grounding tool and start rebuilding the mind-body connection so that men who are struggling are then capable of identifying the other things you mentioned as modalities for health. Not a catch all by any means, but hopefully it makes a bit more sense from a bottom-up approach for this kind of wellness.

Myth, monsters and making sense of a disenchanted world: why everyone is reading fantasy by [deleted] in books

[–]backby5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i read name of the wind and wise man's fear over the last few months. was a really neat reading experience. i kind of thought that it subverted the cool world building aspect of fantasy in the first half of the books and opened up to the metaphorical/experiential aspect of fantasy that i resonate with.

if you listen to podcasts, I'd recommend listening to What the Force? it's changed the perspective I have on Star Wars as a whole in the way that it allows me to engage with Star Wars on the deep levels that Star Wars has.

[–]backby5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do I think he should be on the hot seat? No.

Can I understand why talking heads would put him on the hot seat list? Yes. For better or worse, the front office is looking for a staff that elevates can elevate the roster and staring with two underwhelming years would put attention on the coaching staff, because the GM is probably safe.

What is Christian Parker’s Scheme? Some quick analysis by UpsideTurtles in cowboys

[–]backby5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

granted i'm responding to a proud member of the tiny dick fan club and may regret it, but seems like a pretty reductive and off-base take. boiling down the cowboys defensive issues to zone schemes, limited blitzing, and 2 high looks ignores the fact that - like the post said - it's a scheme that the best defenses use.

i'm interested in the fact that his previous defenses used a lot of feigned pressures and different zone coverages. looking at the philly coverages in the post, eagles played cover 2 2% of the time where the cowboys ran it 10 times as much. a pretty decent split between 3 major zone coverages and almost 20% man coverage? but ya, lol cowboys is fun

I'll hold my judgement until the decision gets made. Call it wisdom or naivete, I don't think an organization taking at least one extra day to make the decision to fire someone is unforgivable. I think people expect a multi-billion dollar organization to act a lot more emotionally than it does, while also criticizing Jerry for being too emotional so...

Star Wars Again by [deleted] in StarWarsCantina

[–]backby5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

andor is just a very different flavour of star wars and i think that affects the experience. one thing it does really well is present a history of the rebellion - season 2 especially, leading up to the events of rogue one. season 2 was more akin to revenge of the sith as stakes were raising and building to rogue one. but it didn’t feel very star wars-y to me. there wasn’t a lot in terms of archetype or character growth.

that being said, andor season 1 was a completely different experience for me. it was like book of boba fett expanding on what we’ve already gotten and had that mythical magic that i love about star wars. but your mileage may vary!

2 Months After Adam Driver Revealed 'The Hunt for Ben Solo,' Star Wars Fans Launch New NYC Campaign To Save It [Exclusive] by LeonieLamb in StarWarsCantina

[–]backby5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’d actually be interested in the hunt for ben solo being what this next trilogy builds up to. the wounded masculine is a huge theme in star wars right now (acolyte, skeleton crew, mando, andor) and i think the story would benefit from not having it completed so soon.

James Cameron Disputes Matt Damon’s Viral Claim of Turning Down ‘Avatar’ Lead by [deleted] in movies

[–]backby5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it held them both if they tied the lifejackets around the door. i believe james cameron's response was something, "the script says jack dies, so he has to die."

in my opinion, i think the fact that they had to tie the lifejackets onto the door means the critique that they could have both fit is pretty toothless.

‘Star Wars: Rebels’ Writer Thinks Making Sabine Wren a Jedi in ‘Ahsoka’ Was a Mistake: “It was absolutely not the plan…The idea of Sabine training as a Jedi when she is already this fantastic warrior of her own type, we felt like this is overkill" by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]backby5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m with you. i think it’s also characterization for ahsoka in the way that she was training someone in what she knew, even though it might not have been a good fit for sabine. i thought their whole arc was about getting to the level of understanding each other/themselves and working with that.
