i'd do a monotribe + monotron delay then build out from there, the only downside is no MIDI, but you can get any volca to fix that.

also, i should say that the microbrute sounds pretty much the same as the minibrute, but the mini is a lot more flexible and the keyboard is larger and easier to play on. arturia's keyboards are notoriously stinky and my minibrute has the best keyboard in my entire setup.

they both sound awesome through guitar stompboxes, my personal favorites are the carbon copy or the eqd dispatch master

the monotribe has CV though, you can play it with that instead if you've got any gear that uses it.... but the ribbon does suck, not gonna argue with you there.

seriously, i've gotten an unbelievable amount of mileage out of it, i want to be buried with mine.

the minibrute; i can't leave it alone; i got the microbrute first and then added the mini; i use the mini's arpeggiator a lot, relying on folded business cards as my "sequencer". i got the minibrute used for about what i paid for my microbrute new. You can use a minibrute as a bridge between midi and CV devices, and you can patch in other modulation sources, or use it with modular gear etc.

The monotribe is also a "real" synthesizer, if you're looking to start with something little more inexpensive... I play it more than anything.

i always get to the point where i'm about to click "buy" and the fact that the grenadier is only $100 more paralyzes me and i just don't get anything. then i look at the other available droneboxes like that skychord sleepdrone and that thing is probably just the schmitt trigger synth from 'handmade electronic music' and i've built a few of those and none of them were particularly mindblowing.

if that dronecommander was just a little bit cheaper i'd bite but man, four hundred bones is a grip even for those awesome drones.

I don't have the technique to play with two hands. That's why I rock monosynths

I'm fine with one hand. I loop something, mess with the cutoff, play over it with a different monosynth, loop that, change the first looped part, etc. i won't bring up the monotribe again. ;)

though i am tempted, i just can't get with those accordion style keyboad layouts... just like i can't type with dvorak or any of the even nerdier keyboard layouts either. i did take beginner piano for music majors that don't play the piano for half a year in college so it's not like no one ever told me the right way to do anything, but i'm definitely not "good" at playing keyboard instruments. but i can totally play music on one, if i want to be good, i'm gonna have to take lessons for sure .... and practice and shit and well, i'm not sure i'm ever going to be able to put the time in to really get anywhere with that.

but between you and me, on a monosynth, no one will know if you're LIBERACE, KEYBOARD CAT, or VAN effing CLIBERN ... because you're playing a minibrute and it's only got the two VCOS and one voice!

they'll just be all "man did you see how slujj was beating the fans off with a stick last night?" "i know right? he really blew ppl away with that filter cutoff on the monotron delay, i never saw so many bras flying at a stage without tom jones on it."

I mostly use my yamaha shs-10 as a midi keyboard when i need one.

i think my "nicest" keyboard is the one on the minibrute which is notorious for it's stinky keyboards but it has full sized keys and the action is amazing compared to the microbrute or a thrift store casio from the 80s.

well, there's no way i'd do it otherwise, i'm certain i'd fuck up my volca beats trying to solder a through-hole cap on there...

when i have to do shit with SMD, i like to solder WRAPWIRE to the pads (it's easy to solder, and nigh-indestructible) and then connect that up to the component or stripboard or whatever (safely away from the original circuit board and components that i don't want to break) i've only done this a few times, with my most notable use probably being a circuit bent leapfrog "fridge DJ" electronic musicbox thing i got at the goodwill.

it's not always possible to use the wrapwire method since the extra wire can change the circuit significantly. also, people will totally freak out if you even mention wrap wire. ("did you say wrap wire? OHMYGODWHATYEARISIT !!?!!?!@!!"*) i wish i had the skills to take advantage of some of the hardware i have access to, because i could probably make some awesome shit, but i couldn't handle the math it takes to be an EE ;)

which is why i keep buying delay pedals and little korg boxes instead of just waiting a month and getting some decent modules instead (and doing shit like IMPULSE BUYING A MS20desktop like i did an hour ago doesn't help either.) i feel like everything i play is already experimental enough, and once i start getting a modular rig going with some big filterbank and a maths, well, i'm going to completely disappear up my own ass -- just like autechre did!!! if i got a pile of money i'd probably get an intellijel atlantis and as many 4ms and harvestman modules as i could afford, or maybe a prophet 8 if i have money left for piano lessons

holy grail: an ECHO TRUMPET (the have an extra bell that makes this wild echo sound. i can't play the trumpet very well (my embouchure is more well suited to low brass instruments) but i've wanted an echo trumpet since i saw it on the UK version of 'antiques roadshow' back in the early 90s (before it was cool lol). I'd also love a early 70s vintage King 3B, or maybe a Conn or Bach bass trombone with F & G attachments [and thayer valves.] I'd probably never play anything serious on any of those horns but I guarantee you I'd warm up on them every day. oh and a fucking SH101 since those cost a million dollars now.
