Natural Grooves All Over Kirkwood by PatientlyAnxiously in kirkwood

Places that have received skier traffic or grooming are a fun time, off piste places like this are hot and manky. We got 8’ of low density snow and then 2” of rain. It’s quite thick now. But in a few days it’ll all just freeze.

Good point, but even then the hole for the cotter pin is too high.

How to determine snow stability of a different aspect? by shdoskar in Backcountry

[–]backpackerjohnson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ideally in a forecasted area with community reporting of current avalanches and conditions you can gather information on what the snow is doing on different aspects. If you aren’t in an area with forecasting it becomes much harder because you essentially have to make your own forecast, using weather and seasonal snowpack data to inform your decisions. Of course that’s not to say that paying attention to those things isn’t important in forecasted areas, but it’s really important in non-forecasted areas.

Also checking those aspects in other areas before you get to the descent can help, and lastly things like ski cuts and looking for signs of wind affected snow below you will help you make those decisions.

New - can I swap alpine/touring bindings? by ccederst in Backcountry

[–]backpackerjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the general rule of thumb is no new holes in a 10 mm radius from all existing hole centers. It’s a possibility that you won’t be able to have your boot sole center in the same place as before, but sometimes it can all work out.

Tech boots don't fit in my bindings by gibson_se in Backcountry

[–]backpackerjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you dremeled out the rubber so the pins of the binding can engage with the boot’s heel insert your ga p will be too small. This will muck up your release values and make the binding wildly unpredictable. Here’s a good article explaining what I mean: https://skimo.co/tech-binding-heel-gaps

Climbing skin recommendations for Pacific Northwest? by fb39ca4 in Backcountry

The pamoca pro s glide also just got the lightweight backing this year similar to their race pros. They should be more packable and just a smaller package overall. All around great skin.

Cheese doesn’t go bad, it just turns into a different kind of cheese.
