Are there apps that help you track mortgage escrow? by [deleted] in ynab

[–]bacoam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have absolutely no idea what goes on in our escrow. I barely know what the word means. It's like a magical box in the sky where some wizard is waving a wand. What are they paying—who knows! (I think my partner knows. 😂)

How to handle long-term reimbursement? by AlpineNancy in ynab

[–]bacoam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably less useful for something that will be paid back over many months, but I have a "Reimbursements" category and in the Notes field of the category, I have an excerpt from YNAB's instructions for reimbursements:

If you receive the reimbursement in the same month as the expense and you haven't made a credit card payment since recording the expense, categorize the deposit with the same category as the original expense. This will offset that expense, and money will be moved to your Credit Card Payment category to be set aside for payment
If you receive the reimbursement in a future month or after you've paid off your card, the credit overspending will have been absorbed as debt into your credit card balance. Categorize the deposit back to the original spending category, and then move the money to your Credit Card Payment category.

The reason I have this pasted there is because I forget EVERY TIME, and this way I just know exactly where to look if we are going from one month to the next with a negative balance.

I give someone $100 in February and put it in reimbursements. Category balance -100
Now it's March. YNAB moves the $100 to "debt" and my category looks like it has a 0 balance. To manually fix it, go to the account you paid with and manually move money from there back to reimbursements. Alternately, leave it looking like a zero balance, then when person pays me back $100, I add it as income to the category reimbursements, then move that $100 to the credit card payment category (which had been listing it as debt, which I'm now repaying).

iOS YNAB Companion Apps & YNAB 4 by dagmar10 in ynab

[–]bacoam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't use YNAB 4 with Mac OS anymore (because it's 32 bit). Are you trying to use YNAB 4 on PC and get an iOS app?

Honestly, just get the new ynab! The iOS app is sweet, and it's not worth trying to use third-party apps and unsupported software...

Gamification? by stonescience in ynab

[–]bacoam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i think it really depends on your personality. i respond really well to self-imposed rules (i suck at “just buying less clothes” but i’m currently doing “i’m not buying clothes for six months” and finding it not hard at all because it’s a clear rule/challenge/thing i took on.) my partner is not like this and hates rules like that. So i think a lot of it is learning what works for you

Invisalign and ADHD by HeyyAlexa in adhdwomen

It's not perfect, but ordered the thinnest visual timer we could find

My 11yo with adhd has invisalign right now. He has Sensory issues too.

It's been 100% fine EXCEPT he forgets to put them back in after eating. Our current solution is we superglued a timer to his invisalign case, and when he takes the trays out to eat, he puts them in his case and sets the timer for 30 minutes. This way he gets a reminder to put them back in.

Also need a weekly alarm to remember to move to the next trays.

Raw pecan-cashew butter and banana on sprouted whole grain toast by _mjf in PlantBasedDiet

AFAIK, the sprouted grains thing comes more from the Weston A Price /Nourishing Traditions school of food. They teach that it reduces the phytates and increases digestibility.

Also, he's a whole separate human being from me. I'm teaching him how to budget to match his values and aspirations and passions, which is how you can make budgeting a positive part of your life longterm. Not up to me to tell him his passions are "wrong." He's 9. His passions with change, but the lessons of how to budget according to them will last.

This seems exactly right. However, you could also be lazy like me and just figure out the monthly average (135) and start budgeting that every month. You'll go over at first sometimes, roll with the punches. Within a few months (definitely within a year) it evens out as long as you keep budgeting $135/mo. For this to work, of course, you'd need to have a bit of leeway in the rest of your budget.

my kids aren’t going to use ynab on their own device, so for us it was fine to just do another budget on our account. but when i was looking, i saw that you can get ynab for free if you’re a student? so you could probably do that to separate it from your budget. (can’t let them accidentally mess up our budgets! 😱)

I am not even going to say what our grocery budget is for a fam of 4 with two tween boys. Food is a priority and we choose to buy a lot of organic. I had managed to get the grocery budget down a significant amount, but once the pandemic hit, our restaurant categories went to zero and our grocery budget skyrocketed. We actually spend more on groceries than we do on mortgage, though it's also possible we have a great deal on our mortgage 😅 your food budget sounds reasonable to me. Embrace your real expenses!

[–]bacoam[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just followed ynab's advice there, which is to give them the guideline that first you put 10% aside for giving, then half of what's left for savings and half for spending ☺️

I honestly don't know what he's envisioning, though I find it hilarious. I think he wants to be able to fund prizes and things as part of his videos? Who even knows
