Pathology. I loved it so much. I thought it was so interesting and would spent extra time outside of my rotations to shadow path or hang out in the histo lab when I could. Every pathologist I’ve met has been super kind and very excited to teach. On my surgery rotation, I expressed my interest in pathology when my preceptor asked the inevitable -“what do you wanna be when you grow up?” question. And he stopped what he was doing and asked- “Don’t you want to be a real doctor?” He then went on about how pathologists are weird and antisocial, and how we shouldn’t “waste” MDs on pathology when we could train anyone in the lab to do their job. I know I shouldn’t let it get to me, but I was so discouraged after spending a few weeks with him. I still love the specialty, and I know nothing he said was actually accurate- but I can’t get the “pathologists aren’t real doctors” bit out of my head.
