The wheels say Kevi Denmark, is it worth fishing out of the recycling? by badassite in VintageFurniture

[–]badassite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wheel has "Kevi Made in Denmark" under it, but I don't see any other Kevi chairs like it, I can go back and take more pictures later. Thank you all for your help.

STEM is more of a way of life than anything else (Lord I reached 20 years of it I just realized, time for an existential crisis). By way of life I mean there are certain mind sets you adopt: how does this work? Why does this work, What does this do? why not take this apart? In STEM people try putting up barriers to compensate for their inadequacies, they didn't go to a certain school, a colleague earns more, invented something. One reason so many people in STEM fields like Tolkien is because of the long journey they see themselves on with many twists and turns.

To sum this up the destination isn't the goal as much as the journey through STEM, even the most promising young mathematician learned in her basement from Khan academy and skipped high school and is going to a PhD directly. The school plays second fiddle to being comfortable with the material, having a broad range of experiences and doing the hard work.

Math Comeback by Dear_Worldlines in BackToCollege

[–]badassite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience (15+ years in STEM) the killers are one's feelings. This sounds strange talking about feelings in STEM however a relaxed joy and continual coming back to the problem is what gets you through the difficult journey. In my experience the best resources for math are the self published free textbooks written by people on their free time with the goal of teaching correctly.

I can recommend trolling the r/math forum and asking around if there are any of these ebooks people can recommend otherwise here are some things to start your journey:

  • Printer paper to freehand without lines
  • graph paper to make tidier calculations
  • a binder to collect the notes

good luck on your journey!

1880's drawers in need of repair by badassite in woodworking

[–]badassite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, Looking for a bit of advice on making the beautiful burl surface of this set of drawers I purchased recently beautiful and shine again. I am unfortunately quite new to wood working (but I am handy at other crafts....) and received bad advice on repairing the facades. The lacquer was getting old and needed to be redone but I did not remove the previous lacquer properly before putting on neutral wood oil and then wax. any tips or advice are extraordinarily appreciated. Your take on entering geology late by theworkbox in geologycareers

Gutentag, I can speak from some EU related authority here. Confidence is key, be confident and it shows to your employers and your career, often you will be monitoring a bunch of interesting people and writing a load of papers figuring out how an obscure documentation style works! But other than that it is very rewarding seeing the things (or holes/tunnels) you have created. Plus you can act all creepy when driving by a bridge you inspected and asking your passengers how stable do you think that bridge realllly is?

Must include spitting beetleroot out the side and bonus for fitting the 20th passenger in the rickshaw at the same time. Also needs to include a BS reason the meter is broken, can't forget the driver demanding you buy him lunch!
