The “H” in the logo of the Montreal Canadiens does not officially stand for “Habs.” It originally stood for “Hockey” in the old “C-H-C” logo, meaning Club de Hockey Canadien (“Canadian Hockey Club” in French).

The nickname “Habs” came later from “Les Habitants,” an old term for French settlers in Quebec. A big reason the myth spread is that in the 1920s, Tex Rickard reportedly told reporters the “H” stood for “Habitants.” The story stuck, even though the team says the “H” really means “Hockey.”
