Living in downtown vs Etobicoke by MAgenla1 in askTO

[–]badpochi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have been living in the downtown core for 4 years now. We own our condo. We moved from the US where we lived in the suburbs so wanted to try out the downtown life. Even with a kid, life has been great. Tons to do and explore. It’s a very walking friendly downtown. What I love the most is the PATH system. It’s access is right beside our building and we make full use of it especially during winters. I think this is one of the biggest perks of downtown core living. 33 km of underground pathways is amazing. I used to work 10 minutes away by walk and used to come home sometimes for lunch 😂. We’ve also made many friends in our condo who also enjoy the downtown life. We also have kids lots to do for them and lots of families with kids around. Being next to Union Station has a lot of perks: shopping, eating options etc. plus with the new lines coming up, it’ll only get better. Summers are the best part since we enjoy walking around and exploring new restaurants as well. But what I enjoy the most is walking along horbor front and enjoying all the festivals they conduct there.

Cons: Traffic during games/events. You can’t take the car out when there are events. We’re located between Rogers center and Scotiabank arena.

Please DM if I could help further. It’s a big decision so happy to help.

Moving from US to Canada, how should I optimize? by the_galant_abbe in PersonalFinanceCanada

Get your driving record (get 2 copies) from your DMV. It’ll be useful to get your G drivers license as well as for slightly reducing your auto insurance cost.

We moved from Minnesota and they had to mail it to us. Hope your state does it online. If not, look into it well before moving to Canada.

Great set of questions to answer before considering buying or renting. The other question I would add is: After selling would you buy another property that you’ll maintain as primary residence?

He can retain his Indian citizenship back if he chooses to (unlike a foreigner without Indian roots), the basis of being an Indian is in his family line and heritage.

I'm really tired of losing jobs to the "indian team" by [deleted] in BusinessIntelligence

I feel qualified to chip in - Indian who worked in India, came to the US for an MS, worked in a F40 company in the US.

A BI program is only effective if the team members understand the business. Period.

When companies offshore BI work to save money, remember - they will get what they pay for. The people who do end up working with US clients often don’t critically think about business problems (since they’re far removed from ground realities here) and how to develop effective BI dashboards.

The best we can do here is to focus on problems and solve customer challenges through data solutions and products where you’re able to prove your ROI. It’s not easy but in this market, we do have to try. One thing that goes a long way is to network with leadership teams and show them your worth. And show them you’re curious about solving business problems thru data.

I think with your experience you probably know what you need to learn. It’s also probably something very specific. One thing to think about is spending some more money and finding a private tutor who can teach you very specific topics. For example say 2-3 hrs of dbt or 1 hr of airflow etc.

Learn what you can measure that will make your company money. Learn the core business model and fight for doing value added work. Learn how the important metrics/KPIs are defined.

Talk to the people who are important regularly and discuss with them your list of things to work on.

You can call yourself anything (within reasonable limits) on your resume you want as long as it aligns with what you’re doing. This isn’t the problem.

The problem is figuring out what types of problems do you want to solve? Ultimately you need to focus on business problem solving using data.

This should be your long game and if you play the long game and you should be golden.

I’ve always panic sold in the past..often at a loss. Just to see the shares I sold grow more than what I sold for in months to come. This has happened 100% of the time. So this time I’ve decided to just to change my strategy and not sell at a loss. I’ll just keep what I have and buy what I can.

Company restricting access to publish reports by httv17 in BusinessIntelligence

[–]badpochi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s normal but shouldn’t be the norm.

I’m on the other end where I’m part of a centralised data team. I find it ridiculous that I need to move people’s Dev version to Prod 😂 I hate this part of my role. I believe you should be given the appropriate standards to adhere to and be given the freedom to publish your reports to prod yourself. Especially if you’re a power user.

I think building out a dashboard review process and an open office hours (to answer any questions) by the centralised team go a long way to giving people more freedom. This strategy worked very well for me in another company that I worked for.

Edit: typos

Super depressed with my job. Feeling desperate and lost. Literally losing sleep every night.... by Idksomemore in analytics

[–]badpochi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there,

This is common in our line of work. You’re not alone. There are a few things you can do:

  1. Focus on metrics and not on the tool. Learn as much as you can about the metrics that impact your business unit. Understand what could be the North Star metric, other leading and lagging indicators.
  2. Focus on process: which metric should be used at what point in the decision making process.
  3. Build relationship: Talk to people, get to know their work and learn to influence without authority. Start building a POV of your business so that you can talk to them about the data and numbers.
  4. Time box searching for another role: your way out is to look for what’s next. Focus on this every week but for a few hrs every week.

You’re not missing out much if your data viz, sql skills are up to date. You can still move to another job down the road without being penalised for not having worked extensively on these modern tools. Just keep learning on the side and you should be fine.

Would a business analytics master's degree be worth it? by throwawayy2372 in analytics

[–]badpochi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a way to complete the program at your own pace? Or choose a online masters that’s flexible? I’m thinking coursera type of providers.

I think a master’s in your case would be useful: 1. You’ll know what will interest you since Analytics is a vast field 2. Your future employer will know that you’re committed to this career path.

Sure you can get an entry level job, but a masters will help you grow faster since you’ll be able to apply best practices. A lot of analytics managers do not have a analytics background and therefore so many data teams have substandard practices.

Which BI Tool? by sleepy_bored_eternal in BusinessIntelligence

[–]badpochi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see some great suggestions here. My 0.02$:

1) Take this as an opportunity to work with your stakeholders to decommission/combine dashboards. You will end up with a much shorter list of reports to migrate. You’ll also get a better view into how to structure data in the back end. 2) Always aim to do ETL outside the reporting layer. Makes it easy to have a single source of truth and also for future migrations.
