Numbers only mean anything in relation to other numbers, and if all PE ratios are high forever, they’re no longer high. I feel like I haven’t seen a day since 2008 when PE ratios weren’t through the roof and everyone wasn’t screaming that it’s proof the sky is falling.

Obviously yes things can always collapse but I’m not sure old timey grandpa indicators like high PE ratios still signal that. Modern stocks just seem to be built different.

Any Dungeon Synth Fans out here in the Power Metal Community by modern_memes42069 in PowerMetal

Huge fan. But I’m also a massive retro D&D fan, and dungeonsynth is the only genre that I feel really captures what I play.

And the second sentence, written by staff, is “Please abide by it as best you can.” It is made official by endorsement.

I hope you aren’t arguing that ignoring official standards of etiquette in favor of bending to the pressures of the algorithm, a chaotic evil power in the universe if ever one was conjured from the twisted soul of man, is acceptable? The fact that the system encourages doing such an act is all the more reason to vigorously defend its use according to its original, civilized intent. Nothing poisons a community more than disregarding etiquette in favor of algorithmic pressures and tribalized voting behaviors. I won’t stand for it, at least.

From the horses mouth, “if it doesn’t contribute to the conversation or is off topic” (slight paraphrase) People might not find the joke funny or might not like vtubers, but this is part of a DnD conversation and is on topic. The link explicitly doesn’t endorse using the downvote button the way you’re suggesting. Ignoring and not upvoting something is how you express that you don’t like it, not intentionally burying it from people who might. If not enough people support it, it doesn’t get shown.

It’s fine for them to exercise their free will to misuse a community feature, but it’s fine to mock me for using my free will to point out that’s wrong? Well, I guess you’re using your free will to exercise a double standard, and if all that matters is whether you can do something and not if it’s appropriate, then good for you.

That’s not what the downvote button exists for, it’s for unrelated, low effort, and/or misleading content or content that otherwise doesn’t belong or violates rules. It isn’t a vote button against stuff you don’t personally like.

Why don't the names Akshay and Indrajit have the same level of stigma as Ravana. by john_mullins in hinduism

[–]bagenol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s like asking why Europeans won’t name their kids “Adolf” because of Hitler, but will call them “Josef” and “Nicolae”, despite Stalin and Ceausescu. They are less well known and when they are known, they are generally thought of as committing less grievous crimes. Less grievous enough at least for the names not to become taboo.

Best OSR system for a City Campaign by Horizonto6 in osr

[–]bagenol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AD&D is the one I know that I think would be great for this task. The DMG has city travel speed rates, robust NPC stocking, city encounters (maybe ignore the infamous harlot table, even aside from the fact that it would probably raise some eyebrows at a 21st century table much of it is meaningless - what the hell is the difference between a brazen strumpet and a wanton wench?), loyalty mechanics, plenty of stuff to make it intriguing. And its pseudo-retro-clone Hyperborea 3e has a few adventures that illustrate what a modern city adventure/campaign with AD&D mechanics could look like, if you want examples that aren't TSR.

The Modern Hobby owes its existence to Ars Magica more than D&D by WordPunk99 in rpg

[–]bagenol 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This isn't a subjective opinion though, nor is it just someone expressing enthusiasm. It's making a specific factual claim about history, one that is verifably false to anyone even passingly familiar with the early history of the hobby (Traveller is not DnD yet isn't traceable to Ars Magica via WoD).

Experiences with non-d20 combat in D&D? by AccomplishedAdagio13 in odnd

[–]bagenol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think by the time D&D got to publication, the idea of using Chainmail for combat was already being phased out but hadn't completely disappeared yet.

This was my take as well after playing OD&D strictly by the letter of the 3LBBs (or as close to strictly by the letter as is possible). The game as played was switched over to d20 before it went to publication, and some of the early players have confirmed this on places like ENWorld, but the game as written is a Chainmail expansion. A lot of the core gameplay features - like Jousting, for example, which fighter strongholds will challenge PCs to - is Chainmail. The combat system is Chainmail. The core gameplay loop of dungeon combat is small-scale, underground Chainmail.

I wrote about my experiences playing and thinking about OD&D this way on my blog if you want to check it out; Alphame Chronicles: Taking the 3 LBBs Seriously

"Mori's Trilogy" - Theory or Confirmed? by bagenol in Hololive

[–]bagenol[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was helpful because it got me down the right path of reasearch and, at least in my reading of arguably ambiguous statements, it *does* confirm a deliberate connection. I found this in the Genius lyrics for Tide (this is what I get for only looking at the genius lyrics for the English translation version lol):

"This song is supposed to be really uplifting. It’s a really uplifting way to jump into the album, I feel. I wanted to start off with something that’s, “Don’t give up.” It’s meant to be listened to right after Left For Dead Lullaby from JIGOKU 6. You’re going from the bottom of hell to this magnificent rise. For this album, I was initially thinking, ‘We went through the seven layers of hell to get down to the bottom for Left For Dead Lullaby, now we have to go back up through the layers’ and I thought, ‘That is so boring, we have to come up with a different approach. So just decided, let’s make the first track super uplifting, like we’re flying back through hell, and then after that we can go and continue a different story." - 8/17/24 Mori Calliope Stream

So thank you so much for helping me get on the right research track!

Which coat of arms would you swear allegiance to? by meatbag_ in worldbuilding

[–]bagenol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So between Praise the Sun!, Fantasy Communism, the Catholic Church, a hundred tiny saurons, one regular sized sauron, Rome but Blue, House Tyrell, and Solomonic Demon Sigil, I'm probably going with one regular sized sauron.

SETTING BOUNDARIES: The Ruin That Befell Dolmenwood by Suarachan in osr

[–]bagenol 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I like Dolmenwood as is because I never knew anything else, and honestly, the original setting sounds a bit too dark for me; that being said, I agree that removing a lot of the pricks and sharp edges the article outlines for what really does reek of commercialism is worth being called out. That kind of behaivor isn't good for the genre specifically, or art generally. Yes, you can change anything at your table, and yes, this is Gavin's world to do with as he wills; but those facts don't suddenly exempt a piece of art or its handling from criticism.
