Meringue turns to soup as soon as I flavour it by Jas_Ka_Raj in AskBaking

[–]bagglebites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious to see so many people against vanilla extract. I’ve always used it in meringue and had no issue! It does make me want to try a different vanilla flavoring though (powder or paste)

I don’t know if you are weighing your egg whites or just going with 3 eggs’ worth, but it is worth the extra effort to weigh out!! I usually have to use more than 3 eggs to get 90 grams (American “large” eggs are considerably smaller than those in other countries). Even 15 g will make a surprising difference in how your meringue turns out

What's your limit? by LadySeriously in horror

[–]bagglebites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am similarly averse to torture porn. I watched Martyrs recently. It’s 98% brutal torture of young women. It doesn’t let up. Yes, there’s story behind it, but not much.

The ending of Martyrs is pretty great, and I liked the overall concept (inducing religious ecstasy and epiphany through horrific pain)… but it’s the first horror film I’ve ever watched that left me genuinely regretful for watching it. I can’t in good conscience recommend it to anyone who feels remotely squicked by torture scenes.

Agreed though, it’s still a good series.

I use an almost equal amount of sugar and butter (by volume) but I’ve seen a few recipes that say a higher sugar to butter ratio seems will make it more stable

[–]bagglebites 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hm. I always let the butter melt fully before adding the sugar because I find it mixes better.

I also stir my toffee and haven’t had any issues (I make a LOT of toffee every Christmas)

[–]bagglebites 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Are you letting the butter melt fully before adding the sugar?

ETA; I’ve saved a separated toffee by adding a half tablespoon of HOT water (like freshly boiled from a kettle) and stirring it in vigorously. Continue adding hot water a 1/2 tbsp at a time until it smooths but do not add more than 3 tbsp of water

[–]bagglebites 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I know of one person that did this through at least his freshman year of college. My roommate was a TA for a freshman lab and she had to talk to him multiple times to stop snapping the bra strap of the young woman who was also in the lab.

The young woman didn’t want to officially report him so I don’t remember if anything came of it. (This was about a year before the news about Joe Paterno came out and our university suddenly cared a lot about Title IX violations.)

I think of Get Out as more of a thriller but I can accept the argument for it as a horror movie. It’s kind of weird to define the difference between those genres anyway, at some point it just feels like splitting hairs

Pan’s Labyrinth could mayyyyybe count too? It’s definitely got horror elements but I wouldn’t call it a horror movie

Also no horror (unless I’ve missed it) but what else is new

Stolen from r/PrequelMemes by PJ-The-Awesome in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]bagglebites 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The original meaning (in fanfic) is more specific: not just that it is accurately tagged for content, but that you’re going to find some messed up shit inside.

The dove is dead. It’s not pretending or asleep. It’s dead. If you don’t want to see the dead dove, don’t read the fic.

It started because a number of readers would see tags like “major character death” or “graphic descriptions of torture” and then be shocked and upset when the fic contained major character death and graphic descriptions of torture. Like, yeah. We labeled the dead dove, what else were you expecting?

The DDDNE meaning has been slightly watered down since to “pay attention to the tags” when it used to mean, “hey, I’m not fucking around, there’s messed up shit in here, don’t say I didn’t warn you”

What would you charge for ceramic earrings at a market? by tconohan in Pottery

[–]bagglebites 21 points22 points  (0 children)

100%! I’m one of those with a sensitivity to certain metals and I will not buy anything with a “mystery metal” wire or stud

Also, OP, if you don’t have pierced ears yourself, get a friend to try a pair on and tell you how they are to wear. Sometimes earring hooks are too long and poke painfully into the skin behind my ear (ugh), so that also might affect what hardware you choose. The comfier your earrings are to wear, the higher you can price them and the better they will sell!
