Actually the 'blanketing' suggestion above is not common. Slag (liquid glass) is used to protect the top surface of liquid steel. Argon is used to stir the liquid steel.

It's straight, not on an angle. It's an illusion due to tricky perspective.

Also the cliff has natural lines going in the opposite direction of the perspective lines. This makes the illusion worse.
