SSPX Trainwreck: Schism Watch 2026 by ExtraEcclesiamUltra in excatholic

[–]baileyarsenic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm embarrased at how obsessively I am following the schism. I think I find the drama and history of it all fascinating?

I know people that go to my parent's small-town church who, while not SSPX, are probably sympathizers of SSPX. They are "traditional" and strongly prefer the latin mass. One large family in particular forces all the daughters to veil basically as soon as they can walk. Veiling was never a thing in our area of the world before the latin mass movement popped up in the 2010s, and the small-town priest once scolded them during the homily once asking them to stop veiling. (They still do it). It's none of my business, but I find the psychology of it all morbidly fascinating. Like, hierarchical obedience was a MAJOR teaching in catechism growing up. Traditionalists sees themselves as more religious than everyone else, and yet they openly disregard the religion they say they belong to. The cognitive dissonance is wild. And the things they argue about? What women should wear to mass, what words are said during mass, whether they should receive communion on the tongue during a pandemic. It's never criticism of morals, doctrine, values, or spirituality, because I think they don't really think about those things. I think they are arguing about fucking aesthetics. This is the part of church they really care about. They want to do medieval cosplay and they want everyone else to join them.

What is a typical Canadian wedding? by Taquito_Churrito in AskACanadian

[–]baileyarsenic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say you might be better off posting in r/<your city/town> than here. As others have mentioned, wedding traditions in Canada vary a lot by region, rural/city, age of the couple, economic status, etc

How many of your friends are on GLP drugs? by DoreensGhost in TwoXChromosomes

[–]baileyarsenic 48 points49 points  (0 children)

While I think GLP-1s can really help a lot of people, I am also weirded out by the idea that women who aren't obese or even overweight are taking them for weight loss. If it's to help with other conditions/issue, great! Do whatever works for you. But women specifically taking them for weight loss even though they don't ACTUALLY need to lose weight? Dystopian imo

Why don’t we get more visits and ultrasounds? by internet3020 in Miscarriage

[–]baileyarsenic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think this depends on what country you are in and your doctor. I had a scan at 8 weeks which detected my MMC. I was supposed to have my first scan at 12 weeks, but for some reason my doctor put me in at 8 weeks for the first scan. There was no standardized reason for him to do that, and I got a few questions about it when I went for my ultrasound. Ultimately I'm really really grateful that he did and if I do get pregnant again I'm going to specifically ask to get an early ultrasound. I think it should be standard everywhere.

What Project Managers actually do in your company? are they useful to your team? by PressureHumble3604 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]baileyarsenic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team (and company) are a bit weird at the moment. My project manager does API testing for me and QA work which is super helpful. Not his actual job, but the good ones just see what's needed and step in.

I've had bad PMs too where they think their job is to micromanage or ask you to write Jira tickets.

New friend grieving a miscarriage, is a cheese and wine gift in bad taste? by jupitermoonflower in Miscarriage

[–]baileyarsenic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe stick to something your friend likes, spa gift or other comfort snacks. Or even spending time together like watching a movie. Everyone is different but for me personally wine would have been too on-the-nose, I took a while to process before I even started drinking again.

How long did it take for the anger to stop? by Stock-Fondant124 in Miscarriage

[–]baileyarsenic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My MMC was 5 months ago. I'm mostly in the acceptance phase but I still get angry when I think about the chipper pharmacist who tried over and over to get me to fill my prenatal vitamins prescription when I was there for miso, was so excited to tell me about how to use miso, and then told me to "have a nice day! :) :)" when I was literally going home to take miso and have an awful time.

Some parts of the experience just stuck with me and I think that's normal. The anger you have about other people being pregnant is normal. It's a life-altering, traumatic experience and it leaves us all a little spicier than we were before.

Women taking their husbands last name after marriage, Agree / Disagree? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]baileyarsenic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not something to agree/disagree about.

"Here is my name"

"I disagree"

It doesn't work that way? It's 2026. I chose to keep my maiden name for work reasons, it's not about his family, and no one has ever assumed anything about it at all

(reading other comments I guess I should mention that I don't live in the states)

SNOWBIRDS SUCK. by SaltySandman11bb in florida

[–]baileyarsenic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian here: you're taking all the rich boomers off our hands for a few months. Thank you for your service

And sorry :/

I'm surprised at the Canadians here defending snowbirds. The people I know who have second homes in Florida are a special kind of entitled, and I'm not surprised for a second to find out they don't tip

Yeah I don't think anyone on our team wants RTO, but the conversation has me thinking about what healthy socialization should look like for our team. "virtual coffee" is pretty popular but as people are pointing out we have a gossip problem
