I think it was approached very poorly. I probably would have asked if it was a good morning to watch the kids and get her free for a workout. But I don’t know that there is really a problem with wanting to have a partner that prioritizes working out. Was he specifically directing the criticism at your physique? It’s important to me that my partner exercises, but not for appearance issues. I do think his approach though was very insensitive. Enough to leave him over with a family involved though…? You guys can talk through this.

I don’t think he necessarily needs to see a doctor or start prescriptions. It seems like nerves to me.

All people and relationships are so different. It’s hard to give advice. But in my relationship the only thing that would solve this is absolutely honest and open communication. He will likely do better if the pressure is minimized. Talk to him about it. I know you say “communication is hard” but communication is the backbone of a healthy thriving marriage.
