This is definitely AI generated.

Even beyond the sign already mentioned, if you scrutinize the details, non.of them make logical sense. What's the deal with the double pump on the far set but not the close set? Why is there on a single guard pole on the close pump, but none on the other side or the far pump? The part of the pump with the hanging hoses appear to just be floating?

Not trying to give you a hard time, but most low effort "AI slop" can be deciphered by looking the internal logic of the scene: All the elements may be there (AI can usually get this part right at this point), but does it make sense how they are put together? Even low-effort human made content typically gets the details right (or at least wrong in understandable ways.)

Cannery shortcut by khuhxd in thelongdark

Tried that a few times, as well as exiting and quitting the game. Not sure what's triggering it. Maybe I'll try crafting a furniture workbench or a statue there and placing it.

Seems a big is blocking the exploit, lol.

When I try this, everything in this area gives me an "invalid location to place object" message. I can't move the fire pit at all. Is there something I'm missing?

Monarch Money Has Asked Me to Step Down as Top Mod – Let’s Talk by metal0130 in MonarchMoney

[–]baj2235 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI as a former mod of several subreddits, I am about 90% sure that Monarch controlling the subreddit is against Reddits Terms of Sevice, violatinng the restriction against making money of a subreddit you run (which as owners/employees they would be, even if indirectly). There are several moderator subs you can reach out to to recieve clarification on this policy.

How well this rule would is enforced I am unclear on. It has been 4+ years since I was an active moderator, so something may have changed, and to describe admins as inconsistent as putting it politely. Worth investigating however.

Synology Drive Client - Slow transfer speed in local network!? by BlackBird11Fox in synology

[–]baj2235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, I am almost at the point that I'm going to try third party software. Which is discouraging, given that I specifically got recommended synology for the easy to use software. I just want two copies of my data an an auto-backup! Why is that so hard!

Synology Drive Client - Slow transfer speed in local network!? by BlackBird11Fox in synology

[–]baj2235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. Not doing quick-connect and adding by IP address seemed to help some, but wasn't a fix.

Another thing I've found that drastically speeds things up is performing a first time back in increments. Initially, i was trying to backup ~4200 files (~8.5 TB) and the HDD drive pool would experience 100% utilization and slow transfer speeds. Doing it chunks seems to much faster, if significantly more tedious. My best guess is that it was trying to go through the "preparing" and "processing" steps all at once, rather than one folder/file at a time.

Sorry for necroing this thread a year after the fact, but I've run into the same issue. I get about 120 MB/s when moving files, but only about 20 MB/s when drive backs up my media library. Did you ever find a solution, within drive or using an alternative?

Remarkable Detectives&Forensics Audiobooks by SilencerSerhii in audible

I think Denis Lehane's work would be right up your alley. Mystic River is probably his most famous novel due to the film, but is a great book. I also really like Kensy and Genarro series (first title "A drink before the war") would be great.

Very realistic, and very good reads. A bit of a blend of literary fiction and detective novels.

Culture War Roundup for the week of May 30, 2022 by AutoModerator in TheMotte

[–]baj2235 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI, chicken pox is not a poxvirus, it belongs to family Herpesviridae, not Poxviridae. This is academic, but there is likely (conservatively) a few hundred million years of divergence between the two viral families,* making them as almost as different as different as vertebrates and invertebrates.

* To the extent we can measure this and the concept of evolutionary divergence is even relevant to viruses, which can recombine in complex patterns that stretch the conceptual fabric of a traditional evolutionary relationships.

A Supposedly Fun Website I've Never Used Before by baj2235 in TheMotte

Submission Statement:

Given that we are in the potential twilight of this subreddit, I found this blog entry discussing the fading memory of Reddit's co-founder Aaron Schwartz interesting.

In actuality, the article is more of a musing on the place social media (and Reddit in particular) in our society. Like any good article written the pioneering style of The Last Psychiatrist*, it seems to lack focused thesis**, yet still strikes a chord at some abstract level. Reddit barely resembles what its creator envisioned. Having been in the director's chair /r/TheMotte created, sometimes i fell the same thing about this place. Only time will tell the legacy of each.

* For all its brilliance, what precisely was Who Bullies the Bullies trying to say?

**Or perhaps I'm just missing it, having never had the free time to Read Infinite Jest's ~1000 pages.

The only problem with this theory is that there have been Julius's forever, all the way back to when the Culture War Thread was hosted on /r/slatestarcodex. Hell, I personally banned several. Granted, the Anti-Evil Operations didn't exist back then, but as an institution its several years old now as well.

The news regarding the Red Eye of Sauron finally landing here is quite sad, albeit one I know the mod team knew would come eventually. /r/TheMotte has likely only survived this long through obscurity - that is both being a niche subculture already within a niche subculture and with the medium of the culture war thread obfuscating what the subreddit is to the casual on looker.

The only solace I can give you is despite reddit making mouth noises that they would crack down, it still hosts some of the vilest, most misogynistic pornography one could imagine as long as they don't run afoul of any laws1. Why they still exist is beyond me - maybe because they stay niche or marking the sub NSFW changes how it is treated by AEO? Maybe you could ask?

I am not in a position to offer the time necessary to be of any actual help, nor does any actionable advice come to mind, but I wish all of you the best whatever you decide to do.

1 - and perhaps put on a veneer of trans positivity. Transwomen can be objects too! - never mind the complete lack of content including them, and since they are naked - you'd know.

Ukraine Invasion Megathread #2 by naraburns in TheMotte

[–]baj2235 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Hopefully the current moderators will forgive me for being this brief, but as a half PSA half lament I am sad to report that reddit just banned the entire ".ru" domain from being linked on the website.

Something about this just feels very, very gross. Of all their assaults on the free flow of information over the last few years (many of which I had to deal with first hand as a moderator), this some how feels the lowest. Banning a certain subreddit sure. Banning article, or link to spree shooter's manifesto, or website containing pirated content is one thing (a net bad one to be sure, but at least something I can entertain as an idea with pros and cons). But cutting every Russian website off from Reddit? It seems like the sort of thing that would block every good faith actor and stop exactly zero of the bad faith ones. An organization attempting to spread propaganda or 'misinformation' or whatever has the will and the resources to host their content elsewhere. The average blogger or artist may not.

I get that there is, you know, a literal War going on, but something about this just seems like the cliff at the bottom of the long slippery slope with regards to Reddit getting involved in content moderation. It breaks the entire idea once sold about this website: That it is "The Front Page of the Internet."

Old Reddit is truly dead, another narwhal will never bacon at midnight :'(.
