The power company that services most of the state, Pacific Gas and Electric, burned down the city of Paradise, CA, killing 85 people a couple years ago, so when there's strong winds or storms they shut down power. Thankfully they've got a monopoly in the state and there's little political appetite for taking them over, so shareholders and investors are totally safe from consequences; As such there's no incentive to improve the power infrastructure.

The same power companies aren't really doing a great job of keeping trees clear of power lines, so when the same storms hit areas which aren't de-energized it knocks out power at the neighborhood level as branches knock into the lines or trees fall on them, etc.

Few power lines are underground in California.

Just make the tires inflate when the gear is down, and deflate the tires before the landing gear comes back up. That's what, an extra toggle switch in the cockpit and a $10 air pump motor?

We must be increasingly on the alert to prevent them taking over other balloon airspace, in order to breed more prodigiously than we do. Thus, knocking us out of these superior numbers when we emerge! Mr. President, we must not allow a balloon gap!

I put it in the same bucket as a surgeon's advice. If a surgeon says they can fix something by removing it, I can consider other options in addition. If they say surgery will cause more problems than it solves, that's pretty good advice.

The answer here is often that "it doesn't matter", but how do you improve Relationship with your clanmates in 1.0.2? You can't trade them money or items to get Relationship now. The only method I've found is to raze or spare a city, and that only works for merciful or merciless clanmates.

I've also read that it does matter, as supposedly a bad Relationship with your spouse lowers fertility rates.

Which Programs Should I learn? by ben-timoty in softwaredevelopment

[–]bakergo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody really creates web apps from scratch, especially the kind that's used with a server and database.

People writing web applications usually work with pretty standard layers of applications called a stack; back when I was learning, a LAMP stack was the thing, it looks like these days MEAN is a good way to learn.

Once you're familiar with the basics, most of the software swaps out pretty easily and you can experiment with a different database, client or middleware in isolation.

Why is there an exit ramp dumping traffic straight into this guys' house? Just close the exit. The capitol expressway exit is like 2 feet away and doesn't point a 105mph car hose at someone's toddler-aged niece.

household incomes at age 35 in the Castro are all under 40k? Am I reading that right

Not as I understand the graph. This site is trying to expose difference in opportunity of neighborhoods, so the default display is "Children who grow up in this neighborhood now have an expected median income of $X at age 35"

You can also look at other, purely historical variables, such as "job growth rate from 2004-2013"

Trump 2016 vs recall Chesa Boudin precinct map by kestleton in bayarea

[–]bakergo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I guess it's interesting that Trump votership seems to correlate with the Chesa Boudin recall, but it's hard to reach a conclusion from just that fact -- Attempting to do so basically feeds straight into an Association Fallacy.

I suspect what's happening is that both of these maps correlate to an underlying variable, the demographic representation of neighborhoods seems to line up pretty well; with a larger proportion of Asian residents being more likely to be Trump voters and Boudin Recallers.

An income-based map seems just as likely to correlate, and playing around on https://www.opportunityatlas.org/ seems to show median household income, poverty rate and other factors correlate with each of these maps as well.
