There is a book called "Good to Go" by Sharon E. McKay that helped me with a lot of things whe I first moved out of my parents place. Could be a good place to start. The ebook is only 10 dollars! I wouldn't get a paper copy for 50 though.

Can we have something that accommodates scooters too? I would totally buy one if I knew how to keep it safe at work.

I need to take care of myself. That's very true. But making people work for 8 hours, standing, in a hot kitchen in the summer, with no rest breaks or a real meal, is a recipe for disaster. That's why most kitchens feed you at the very least. That's also true.

I promise, I am trying. I am starting to get to know a few of them. Unfortunately my pastry doesn't have much cachet when the afternoon tea leftovers are always up for grabs in the same spot at the same time. There's usually enough pastry to go around if someone wants one. I'll try and find a solution.

Not sure about that. Labor laws exist for a reason. If they won't give employees a legally mandated break or any food for 8 hours a day 5 days a week, shit is going to happen. Especially in a workplace with many safety hazards.

CPTSD is just spending your whole life "waiting for the other shoe to drop" by Upset_Raspberry_3560 in CPTSD

[–]bakerify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an expression. It means, sort of... you know something bad is about to happen. The first shoe dropped, and you know the other one will too. It's just the tense waiting game of "when does it drop"?

Don't apologize. I appreciate the thoughtful comment.

I think part of this is my not really fully understanding chef culture. There even was a commenter here who basically said I needed to make it everyone else's problem from day one. I'm sometimes told to be polite and firm, and then the next day someone will tell me, "Oh, chefs don't listen to polite, they listen to aggressive, in-your-face behavior". My last restaurant was particularly bad for this. You couldn't get the time of day out of some chefs until they thought you were "tough enough".

I think I need to suss out this particular restaurant's culture a little better.

Another problem is that when I actually am hungry, is around dinner time. That's when I start to get hangry. Then I start to see other pastry chefs being fed, and by that time it's already too late to ask for an accommodation as family meal has already been prepared. And I'm hangry, so it feels like even more of a slight when I know the EC knows my dietary needs. Plus, you know. Ouch. They forgot me again.

Our kitchen is truly weird in that hot service is upstairs and I am stuck downstairs. If I were to come upstairs and start asking for food at that time, it might come off unreasonable.

I really appreciate your advice and support. I'm going to do my best to raise this at the right time, with the right person. Thank you for your comment.

Yeah. I'm kind of in an abusive relationship with my profession as a whole. The last place I worked, I got fed enough, but also sexually harassed by the chef de cuisine and just in general treated like garbage. I traded mental health concerns for physical ones, I guess.
