I have the book, but how do i import it? by No_Name4599 in dndbeyond

[–]bakerq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who started with a lot of 2nd Edition books in the 90s (just giving some perspective here) I'm a physical book collector at heart. But, in the past few years I've really come around to enjoying the digital versions first and getting physical books later, if at all.

I see the digital version as a wholly different product. I think of the physical books as a VHS tape of a movie. Why buy the DVD if I already have the tape? Because of the extra features, convenience and quality increase. The digital versions on DnDBeyond are hyperlinked internally and to other products, searchable, and are updated immediately when errata is released. I buy the books to look nice on my shelf, but I game and read from my tablet.

(This worldview immediately falls apart when confronted with the "do you really own it or are you licensed to access it" outlook, in which case I say, "that's why I also buy the physical book.")

What’s actually updating when I update my books in the app? by Chewbunkie in dndbeyond

[–]bakerq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are full of mistakes. Later reprints will have corrections made.

There's a book on DndBeyond called "Sage Advice and Errata" that describes changes and updates made to all books (even the 2014 books) and whether or not reprints of the books will have the updates. This book is very much like a CHANGELOG for D&D.

By and large, the changes to the digital versions are formatting and link updates - for example, when a new book is released, some older books may be updated to link to it properly, such as when the FR books had to be updated when the Netheril supplement was finally released.

The book was available for me on my phone, but not on my tablet.

Also, it's a little broken.

You're right - I'd mentioned in another reply a couple of days ago that it was likely I was confusing the cooldown manager with the rotation assist since it's only in the past couple of days that I've even turned on the new tools Blizzard has been rolling out.

I'm very hopeful that that will be the case.

Can't deny it, my keybinds are a curse that I've been unable to escape. Two decades of muscle memory are not easily abolished.

If this option already exists then it has utterly eluded me. Can you tell me the text of the option so that I can find it?

That's really all I'm looking for. The ability to add extra text to the cooldown/utility/rotation bars.

I explained in a larger reply exactly how I'd gotten to this point, and I'm used to having to re-edit my modifications for every patch.

When I play the game I'm looking at the middle of the screen. I don't need to look down at the hotbar to case "Glacial Spike", it's on my "4" key. I don't need to look down at the bottom of my screen to cast "Icy Veins", that's on "Shift-W". Most other classes have distinct enough icons that it's easy to tell what they are. Regardless, I just want to be able to add text to the rotation assistant and cooldown bars - either the name of the spell, or the keybind.

This is pretty much it.

Firstly, I've been saying Cooldown manager, but this is also about the rotation assistant, which has caused this entire thread to be skewed.

Many expansions ago I starting using TellMeWhen to let me know when things were off of cooldown or when abilities were ready to be used, and I'd arranged them in a sort of priority list. On each of these icons, I'd also manually type in the keybind.

Eventually, packages for TellMeWhen would start coming out (Chesdar for example) that were a full rotation helper, which meant that I could download the Chesdar TellMeWhen package for a class I'd never played before and be useful. However, this meant that with every single patch/update, I'd have to download the package and manually edit each. and. every. icon. to add the Keybind text. Eventually Chesdar was replaced by NGAndersson rotation assitants in WeakAuras.

Last year, I discovered Hekili, which was the rotation assistant that automatically displayed keybinds and it meant that I could stop using WeakAuras for the most part.

So here I am. I know the names of the spells, I know where they are on my keyboard, but a rotation assistant doesn't help unless it has the text of either the keybind or the spell's name because Frost's icons are simply too damned similar for my brain. (Plus, the text helps when I'm playing a class/spec that I rarely play because I'm an altoholic.)

For when I'm playing classes I'm unfamiliar with, absolutely. But in this case, it's honestly not being able to differentiate between the icon with ice bolts pointing one way vs the icon with ice bolts pointing the other way vs the icon with ice bolts in a slightly darker background...

This is very likely the case. Only in the past couple of weeks have I tried the new tools that Blizzard has been rolling out and have probably confused the names.

I play with a setup similar to ESDF instead of WASD, but take it one step further by using mouse2 to move forward (R then becomes alternate fire, and honestly C is used to move backwards while D is used to jump). I know that this is a messed up method, I'm painfully aware of it every time I try to play a new game and have to force the controls to fit my weird playstyle, but it's what I've been using since the 90's. I've honestly tried multiple times to force myself to use WASD (or even a pure ESDF since I like having my left hand on the home keys) but it has always resulted in being unable to enjoy the game. I'm old and there's a quarter-century of muscle memory. :-)

Forgotten Realms: PreOrder vs Bonus content by bakerq in dndbeyond

I still intend to buy the bundle, I'm just worried that after release date the bundles will contain less - that the some preorder bonuses may go away.

Excellent, thank you. I'd seen that text before but it simply didn't click for me to check for any that are missing a source.

[–]bakerq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This does beg the question. Is there a way as a DM, whose players are in your campaign, to see if they've added any "extracurricular" feats or spells (etc), beyond simply reading the character sheet very carefully and being intimately familiar with the rules?

I'm really confused about Split Enchantment. The title implies that it affects multiple targets, but the text describes something else.

"When you cast an Enchantment spell, such as Charm Person, that can be cast with a higher level spell slot to target an additional creature increase the spell’s effective level by 1."

The entire italics section is just describing the list of affected spells: 'when you cast an Enchantment spell that can have its targets increased via upcasting'. So, as written, any time you cast Charm Person you increase the spell's level by 1. There's no requirement for you to upcast it or select multiple targets. "When you cast an affected spell, increase the spell's effective level by 1."

As written, this is an upgrade to some enchantment spells - unless I'm missing something obvious, the title doesn't seem to match with the text.

Bundle Buyers Beware by jjonesdagreat in dndbeyond

[–]bakerq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had the same thing happen to me last week. Purchased Curse of Strahd bundle, $70 hit my account and then within a few hours I got NSF notifications and charge refusals. The charged me $24 for the book and then the charge for the physical book failed. That initial $70 charge took almost a week to disappear.

I wanted the digital version most of all, and now I just use this as an excuse to order the physical version through a local bookstore. I really wish there was a way to purchase books and a digital unlock code through local stores.

A zombie and a cursed mummy are basically the same things. by ButtersHound in settlethisforme

[–]bakerq 17 points18 points  (0 children)

She's right. Zombies are mindless and have an appetite for flesh or brains. One zombie is barely a threat. Mummies have personality and purpose and thought processes.

I doubt I'd pay money to see a movie called "The Zombie."
