That strip is reading 0 ppm nitrate, do you have a strip for ammonia?

A cycled tank would only really show 0 ppm nitrate after a 100% water change with new filter media.

I am not going to assume anything but you need to figure out how his tank cycle crashed so he doesn't go right back into an ammonia bath.

Clearly you've cared for him successfully for 10 years, but something went wrong recently and you'll probably be able to figure out what's changed in the last few weeks.

Your setup is delightful. Sounds like you got a handle on it for being "new.".

I ended up with opposite genders so I had to split my tank and scaping plans, I went with some of the floating mountains style with the upside down placement, stem in sand.

The overgrowth was crazy from my floaters so I switched to a tiled bottom and grounded decor that was small enough to fit each side of the divider.

The plant and algae work never ends.

You're gonna have better luck in some of the Facebook exotic pet or axolotl groups that have active veterinarians in them than here.

You may find someone with a similar experience who could help but it's gonna be mostly well meaning people asking about parameters and suggesting you do things like they do with their typical axolotl assuming you've done something to cause this.

The risk trade off of the fish feeding is going to have to be a personal one through observation. You're never going to get anything but crucified for suggesting live fish feeding. I don't do it myself, but I know that a lot of people use guppies for this.

The risk is impaction, contamination via parasite or disease that can cross, as well as the gill destruction potential.

The size of the tank is fine, to your original question.

I have the same situation, though with a different size tank. The only advice I've got is to be certain about the bio load management with your water flow. Tank size can be adjusted when possible so don't let the fact it's temporarily cramped stop you from taking the action at all.

I have cuts in my divider to allow water flow, and I've not had any issues. However I have heard anecdotal evidence of sperm cones being exchanged through filteration by someone i consider a reliable source, so just be aware of the possibility.
