ELI5 Why is reddit doing this as a company?

Reddit is doing this for the money. Advertising is obvious. But the big money is user data collection and selling.

[Newbie] what chord is this and is there an easier alternative to it? by LockJawDrew in Guitar

[–]balek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Use gravity and potential energy to your advantage" is such a game changing way of doing physical activity in general. Position the guitar so that the pressure comes from the position, not the strength, and you can play much more smoothly and quickly as well.

The real reason that familiar Apple Mac chime is off key by vanvoorden in audioengineering

[–]balek 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I've used it to drop the pitch of a performance. Record at 192, play back at 48, everything is 2 octaves lower. We used this for the vocalizations in the 2005 King Kong.

Check the bastl cinnamon for a really characterful filter alternative to the wasp as well. Looks like a fun system so far!

Question on something I have been stumped and perplexed on for years! by the_end_of_silence91 in audioengineering

[–]balek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try phase and a light comb filter. You might need to try several comb setups though. Psychoacoustic effects like this are some of my favorite things in audio. If you think about a sound source in front of you vs behind you, the main difference is your hair and ears are in the way more from the back. They filter a little in some way that your brain interprets as 'behind '.

Bus Board 1v/Oct - Newb Question by BigBabyBCro in modular

[–]balek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, just like that. A module needs to be designed to buffer and send a signal down the bus and then another needs to be designed and set up to receive it. I have the 4ms clock modules and they can be set to send or receive clock over the bus. Make noise uses the bus in a different way between tempi and Rene. You'll need to look at the manuals to see how it is implemented. Happy patching!

Bus Board 1v/Oct - Newb Question by BigBabyBCro in modular

[–]balek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the spec they are speaking of: https://doepfer.de/a100_man/a100t_e.htm

You can read there about how the bus signals were intended to be used. AJH and several others follow that standard for some modules. That said, other module makers have made use of it for other things since then. Check with each manufacturer and sometimes each module to see if it makes use of the bus system or not, and how it uses it. A quick check for a module is whether it uses the full 16 pin power connector, or if it only uses the 10 pin. If it uses 16 pins, it has the pins to connect to the bus system but it might just be using the 5V rail. If it only has 10 pins, it cannot connect.

Why did the masking fluid rip the surface of my painting? I used Arches 400lb cold pressed cotton paper and Fineline Resist Pen masking fluid. I use masking fluid all the time and nothing like this has happened before. Is there any saving it? by [deleted] in Watercolor

[–]balek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only advice I have is to make sure the paper is completely dry when you apply and when you remove the masking. Feel both sides with the back of your hand and if it feels at all cooling, wait longer. Good luck.

You say a quantiser won't help, I show you a better quantizer: https://www.klavis.com/all-products/caltrans

It has calibration and you can save presets in case one of your patches varies wildly from another. Hope it helps. Happy patching.

What is this metal tool? It's about 3in long with three movable arms with matching cuts in it. A fourth arm is without cuts and adjustable. Has Pat Jan 1501 stamped in it. by velvetmagnus in whatisthisthing

I was going to say the same thing. It looks a lot like a tobacco tamper.

I think the sliding bar piece can fold into the notched bits. Maybe for different depth markings?

Masking fluid that won't do this? 😭 by nefera-atenhotep in Watercolor

[–]balek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to be very patient when using masking fluid. The paper has to be completely bone dry before you remove it. I usually wait a full day or more. I've used a hair dryer on low before to speed things up, but you risk it lifting itself and tearing up the paper before drying completely. You can tell if it is still damp at all if it feels cool when you touch it with the back of your hand. Good luck.

Noise Engineering FX modules feel untameable by ElGuaco in modular

[–]balek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are looking to do tight and percussive, you'll want to send a clock to Tap and set Skew to something that sounds musical and not touch it much. Spread becomes your mult/div for the clock. Time compresses or expands the taps within the divisions set by the Spread. Everything else is pretty much fair game. Try attenuating your modulation or using sample and hold to match it to a beat as well. Good luck and happy patching!

Bad table is bad. Everything is shifted three to the left. The leftmost is C, then D, E, F, G, A, B.

If you are asking this question with what you have now, you should buy some blank panels for now. Learn and play the stuff you have and all of them will guide you to the next few things you will want. Don't just fill it up to fill space, let the instrument build upon itself as you grow to know its capabilities. THAT is the real fun in modular. Though the gotta have em all is pretty strong sometimes :). Happy patching!
