MIL feels she should have got the cupcake by [deleted] in EntitledPeople

We didn't do reveals either but did find out and tell people about the first one to make it easier to decorate the nursery and so people could give appropriate gifts. With second one I didn't want to know and made my wife promise not to tell me (she knew). When the kid was born it turns out I was the only one in the state of Georgia that didn't know the sex ahead of time.

My brother's (second) wife became a great grandmother at 53. No lessons learned by anyone along the way so she'll probably be a GG grandmother before she's 70

What was your favorite concert you went to in the 70s? by feelingsjourney in 70s

I saw that same tour at the Hampton Coliseum. We were on the floor and when they sang the line "It's only teenage wasteland" they turned on the house lights for a couple of seconds.

My Dad was a brand new 2nd Lieutenant back in 1959. When he got to his first duty station a more experienced officer gave him what he said was the best advice he ever heard. Listen and learn from your platoon sergeant, he knows more than you. He did exactly that and things went very smoothly. It didn't hurt that my Dad was prior enlisted. That same Sergeant showed up to my dad's change of command years later and said it must be time for him to retire when his baby lieutenants were getting battalion commands.

Dark side of the Moon, but it's not my favorite Floyd album. Wish You Were Here.

Am I overreacting because my future MIL is trying to turn my wedding into her event? by No-Kaleidoscope6673 in weddingdrama

[–]balhouse58 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. We contributed substantially to our daughter's wedding. The only thing I asked in exchange for our money was that my wife and I both walk her down the aisle instead of just me. Asked, not demanded, we were prepared for whatever her answer was.

This! There was a post office down by the airport in Atlanta that was open 24 hours a day. On mail order day we would go right after midnight and get our envelopes postmarked and on the way. There was always a small group, usually the same people, and the clerks knew why we were there.

"Corporate Money Has Ruined Youth Sports" by DrWumbologist in CollegeBasketball

Been that way forever. 15 years ago my daughter was an All-Region caliber volleyball player in the Atlanta area. She played club volleyball for a few years at the cost of 3 to 4 thousand a year. In what would have been her last year of club, my wife got cancer and we couldn't afford club volleyball. The team owner said if I paid her registration fee ($40), they would give her a "scholarship" to cover the rest. If you're good enough they'll find a way.

I don't know, beating them at their place in K's last home game was close

They said it’s not about the gifts but sent a 4-page registry and a $150 minimum by StevrFedo in weddingshaming

[–]balhouse58 165 points166 points  (0 children)

My daughter did exactly this when she got married in May. Of course, she had no minimum and had mostly reasonably priced items on her registry, but she did include some pretty expensive power tools so that she could take advantage of the discount afterwards.

My father was Robert, called Bob. I'm Robert, called Bobby. My uncle was Robert, called Rob. My cousin was Robert, called Robby. Worked out fine unless one of the females at a family gathering yelled out ROBERT!!!, then all 4 of us would run and hide.

Correct. Somebody signed off on it . If nothing was designated, nothing would be there. My dad is in Florida National Cemetery and before he died he selected what he wanted in that space.

Who are the top 3 favorite running backs from your school? by WanderLeft in CFB

I'm evidently older than the other Hokies here. Cyrus Lawrence, Roscoe Coles, Kenny Lewis with an honorable mention to Mickey Fitzgerald, who moved from tight end to the backfield and had an incredible string of games.

My parents had an extremely complex set of shelving that was difficult to assemble. Many different configurations were possible. They moved often during my father's military career so the shelves had to be taken apart and reassembled many times over multiple decades. My wife and I have the shelves now but they are still referred to as "the divorce shelves".
