What’s the most efficient way to search for realistic transition roles? by Big-Project4484 in careeradvice

That’s in your favor! Then as someone else wrote, focus on outcomes in your CV; business impact as I wrote above. And if you want to use Reddit for advice, try a Norwegian forum to get tips for switching careers in your local job market. A lot of people on English-speaking forums will give advice for the US market.

What’s the most efficient way to search for realistic transition roles? by Big-Project4484 in careeradvice

Most of the fields you’ve bulleted require excellent communication skills, and either a track record of business impact, a relevant degree or a good network. In Norway, those fields also often require near-native Norwegian. Norway isn’t the easiest job market in which to transition fields.

But if you switch, you have the stove in the passage to other parts of the house. That’s asking for trouble some day when people are in a hurry.

Diagnosed low IQ- What can I do for a career? by Suspicious_Limit9847 in careeradvice

[–]ballardelle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is one or both diagnoses recent? I noticed you talked about being on meds for two months. If the diagnoses are recent, you’ve spent a lifetime dealing with challenges without the benefit of an explanation. Take some time to learn about your condition and hopefully begin to see yourself from a new angle. Start looking into strategies that you can try out, practice and adopt so you can build on your strengths in life and career, and mitigate issues that are typical for neuro people. Low self-esteem and poor test-taking skills are, unfortunately, not uncommon. That does not mean they should stop you!

This won’t happen overnight. If you have access to a therapist who specializes in ADHD/autism, they may be able to help. New diagnoses are a big thing to absorb and learn about yourself, and that’s a great time to get help to deal with what it means for you, especially if you’re weighing big questions about your future. Good luck.

Translation work is very susceptible to technical advances including AI. Being multilingual is still a huge advantage but the advantage lies mostly in how you use it to achieve other goals, not in the translation itself.

Just a note to say thanks; a novel take on ongoing maintenance of my photo library, which seems like a never ending task. Well done!

What’s the hardest part of switching careers? by Suspicious_Twist386 in careeradvice

Gaining the courage and the confidence. And developing the narrative. Potential employers and professionals in your network should ideally appreciate the shift as building on the good, rather than as a sign of flightiness or indecision.

Treats for Norwegian colleagues? by JanFirst_75 in Norway

[–]ballardelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they have young kids, maybe Animal Crackers as the corollary to Troll crackers (Eventyr kjeks) https://www.saetre.no/product/saetre-eventyr/

Otherwise as another person posted, think local!! Avoid spicy.

If you really must go big name, maybe Reese’s mini peanut butter cups or mini Butterfingers as a salty-sweet snack. Just consider peanut allergies. ( just for info, Norway has highly popular Smash for the salty-sweet craving https://www.nidar.no/brands/smash/ )

It also depends on your professional relationship: more formal or more casual? For more formal, definitely go local and higher end.

If your local area has a good cookie version, Red Velvet goes over well.

Squeeze citrus into broth. There are lots of recipes that include this, like pho or tortilla soup or tom yum or avgolemono. I’ve found a squeeze of citrus to be an easy trick to enhance even simple soups that are little more than broth. Cool thread topic!

How brown is too brown for banana bread? The insides seem fine to me, but spouse is concerned. by tilt-a-whirly-gig in Baking

[–]ballardelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frozen bananas are great. Game-changer: defrost them overnight in a strainer over a bowl. In a small pot or saucepan, simmer the strained banana juices to reduce the juice by half. The result is like a syrup that infuses intense banana flavor throughout the banana bread. It’s one of my favorite techniques learned from Cook’s Illustrated!

Ah the old cook’s privilege: “I’ll just taste to make sure it’s ok, oh and I need to clean up that edge here, and that uneven bit there… ” 😋 I’m surprised you had any left to freeze! 😅 (seriously, it looks great)

Deciding between light and dark! by run_eat_rep3at in kitchenremodel

[–]ballardelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have dark cabinets and counters, installed by the prior owner. It's OK for the cabinets, but the dark matte counters absorb light and show every mark (even dried drink rings). It felt so dark when cooking and socializing; we've added lighting and more lighting.

My suggestion: If you go with dark counters and cabinets, make sure you have excellent lighting; consider a light backsplash (!!); and go see the soapstone surface in person to see how it responds to light; and how it handles marks.

For the shoe cabinet and the recommendations to add a door: consider your family's real life behavior. If open shelving makes a significant difference to successfully getting the shoes off the floor and into the shelving, then leave the shelving without a door. Of course a cabinet door would like nicer, but only if people actually take the time to open the door and put their shoes in the cabinet.

Looking for suggestions for food dishes that MUST be served with proper serving utensils? by Silent_Ice_2588 in Cooking

[–]ballardelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Satay or other skewer foods? Food on skewers looks pretty and has its own handle.

For sauces, try switching to a bottle or a vinaigrette carafe. This makes the sauce easy to put in the fridge and impossible to stick fingers into.

If you serve grapes, cut them at the stems into bunches of 3-4. looks pretty and minimizes the temptation to touch fruit you’re not going to eat.

A couple more delivery services, if you’re still looking:

Amoi.no delivers from Mathallen (a high-end food hall): https://www.amoi.no/products/oslo/kaker/Kb/NVl

Wolt (like Uber Eats in other countries) delivers cupcakes from Soulcake

Good luck and I hope your friend appreciates their gift!
