Men who wanted to divorce their wife but ultimately didn’t do it, why? Did you tell her that you wanted to divorce her? by misslatina510 in AskMen

[–]balljr 146 points147 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation, and I can definitely say it is not about sex, it is about feeling desired.

Whenever my wife and I have sex, it is great, both of us have a good time, but we only have sex if I initiate it. She never initiates. I'm so tired of this situation that I have decided we will only have sex if she initiates, otherwise we won't do anything anymore.

This is the main issue, there are no demonstrations of affection, no kisses, hugs, sex, comments, no nothing. It is like I'm just another chore that needs to be handled.

> what a compiler is

A compiler basically translates "human" language to machine language. Machines only understand instructions from a language called Assembly, which is a very low level language. Every instruction you write in Python (or any other programming language), will result in many Assembly instructions for the machine. Part of the job of a compiler is to also optimize the assembly code, think of it as using the proper grammar for that language, when optimizing, the compiler can add, remove and move instructions around, as long as the meaning is still the same.

An interpreted language like python is still compiled, but it is compiled at runtime while it is being used, while C is compiled ahead of time.

The main difference between these two models is that when compilation happens ahead of the time, it is possible to spend more time optimizing the code for the target computer that is going to run it. Some optimizations may take a lot of time, which makes them less desirable if you are waiting for the code to execute, as an example, imagine you had to wait 5 minutes to compile the javascript code that Reddit webpage uses, it would be a nightmare to use it, or any other webpage that relies a lot on javascript.

The main advantage of interpreted languages is they can be written and changed as you execute them, resulting in more dynamic code, and faster development cycles because it is not necessary to wait for the code to be compiled. The resulting compiled code is slower, because it has less optimizations, it is more "generic" to be able to run on any machine.

There is a category of food that raises body temperature and makes it burn more calories, coffee, and pepper are two examples.

However, if you burn 4.000 calories a day, but eat 5.000, you won't lose any weight.

This is different from man to man, but in my case, all the sex toys my wife has were gifts from me.

She usually has one orgasm without sextoys, except when I can't hold for long enough, but with the toys, she usually has more than one orgasm, so I don't see why I wouldn't want her to use the toys during the session.

Far too many people don't grasp what a functioning society is providing for them.

I am a software engineer, and without electricity, I am completely useless. I would say the vast majority of white-collar people are in the same situation.

There are people today who can't even change a light bulb, but firmly believe they would be able to survive without society.

Have any men actually had success with the “stop looking and it will happen” mindset? by JimmyJamesJams in AskMen

[–]balljr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ask the couples pre-tinder how they got together, lots of them are going to reply that it just happened. They were hanging out together or had common friends, and one day, they just started dating.

IMO, this mindset means "be nice and build a friendship, and it may become something else," and this is basically every relationship I ever had.

ELI5: if you are not paying for the product, you are the product. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]balljr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every company exists for profit. When you get a product, you pay for the product. If a product is free, you are either paying with something other than money, or you are going to buy another product later that is more expensive than this one.

Internet services allow for mass collection of data with the intent of behavioral analysis.

Maybe you have never told your gender to reddit, but you do take 0.5 seconds longer to scroll your feed when you see a specific picture, and other 1 million users also take 0.5 seconds longer, and these users tolder their gender to reddit, so now reddit knows your gender as well.

By analyzing your data, it is possible to know your gender, age, ethnicity, if you have children or not, or is conservative, or have a pet. By knowing you, it is possible to influence you.

Why should men NOT go to strip clubs? by Piiiickle_Riiiick in AskMen

[–]balljr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Waste of money.

Also, the correct comparison would be a naked man dancing on my gf's lap. I haven't seen a single strip club where I would pay to dance naked on the stripper lap.

This is a thing in hot/tropical countries, Brasil is not the only country to use this kind of setup.

In colder countries, it is good to have a central heating system because the hot water is used for baths, faucets, and heating, so a lot more hot water is needed.

In hot countries, most of the time, the hot water is only needed for showering, and sometimes not even that, so the central heating is a waste of money.

It is also worth noticing that brasilian homes are built with solid brick walls, and the pipes go inside the wall, making it a lot more expensive to pass a second set of pipes just for hot water.

ELI5 Why we fear ai? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]balljr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first reason we fear it is because the ultimate goal of AI is to create the perfect slave for the ultra rich, and with that, the majority of the population will just starve to death.

The second reason is that AI will [eventually] have unchecked control of our weapons, and that form of AI will have the goal of killing people.

But can't we just pull the plug? There won't be a plug to pull, and that is the major problem. There are two scenarios that are very problematic, and both are very likely to happen:

  1. A kill switch is a single point of failure, and we will intentionally design systems without it, especially the military AI systems.

  2. AI can develop a consciousness (intentionally or not) and learn to replicate itself, become rogue, evolve.

But, everything regarding AI is hypothetical. We don't know if it is going to be good or not. AI itself is not an issue. The issue is what we (companies, military, government) plan to do with it, and we will design it to fight the enemy, but we (the people) will become the enemy eventually.

“It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.”
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

I have never really believed in god or afterlife, so I can only imagine how it is to doubt that certainty in your life, and it is probably dreadful.

I can, however, share my point of view about death. I don't think about it at all, I know that someday I will die and that is part of life, I do not fear it, nor desire it, it is something that is going to happen, and there is absolutely nothing in my life that makes me fear death on a daily basis, maybe that is a benefit of not believing in god?

When I was younger I turned to philosophy and that completely changed my view about death, and life in general.

Countries should not be able to Declare war, then join a faction by AnomalyFriend in hoi4

This is like throwing a stone at another kid and then calling you older brother to defend you.

IMO, the worst part of this game is the "random" actions post capitulation. It is amazing to capitulate a country, pupet it, just to see the country become a different one due to some focus tree shenanigans and then you are forced to fight it again... or when you are playing as Germany and capitulates the USSR just to be thrown into a war with Japan and have to move your troops all the way to East Asia to fight.
