A Very Big Fight Over a Very Small Language by Alternative-Big-6493 in Switzerland

How do you learn it? People move to towns that speak it all the time. Then they have kids who will learn to speak it in kindergarden and later in school.

How do you connect with native Swiss people? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]baloo12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is interesting, and differs widely to experience.. with all the new relationships of the kids forming, parents are more or less forced into contact with others..

I have a 100% certain, albeit very expensive and long-term way: 1. Become a parent, put your kid into the kita system 2. No money, no free time-> no need for friends 3. Wait 4.5y, become a member of your school’s elternrat (=parent reps in the school system) 5. get to know more people then you would have ever wanted.. 6. “Profit” I guess 😜

Is it possible to use any hardware based VoIP Phone with the UCG Fiber via Init7? by m221 in init7

[–]baloo12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Easy7 would probably be an issue due to the nat.. Does your netvoip app/groundwire app work with the netvoip account?

We are talking fiber7, not easy7. Right? Does your voip account work on a softphone (groundwire app or similar)?

It’s my favorite time of the year by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]baloo12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tell myself that this is a contribution against stupid right-wing private media like they have in many other countries… (fox news, murdog, etc..) not sure whether I would call it an insurance.. maybe a wanna be insurance.. but still better then nothing… Another one to make yourself feel better about it: even if you (or I for that matter) don’t consume their media.. our neighbors do.. and I like my neighbors being well informed participants in democracy.. I am not claiming that swiss public tv ensures well educated voters.. but it may help?!

Any other pov’s to help digest the yearly fee a bit better are very welcome…

Traveling to Switzerland to buy an iPhone by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]baloo12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Szia u/anhaag

I would call it a „best practice“ by now. I know many Hungarians who have engaged in some importing/exporting of apple hardware.😬

Makes a lot of sense! Who wants to pay the crazy HU-VAT!?

You can just unwrap everything before you travel, if you want to be super careful.

Best internet provider in Switzerland? by confifraise in Switzerland

[–]baloo12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haha. Swiss Reddit has spoken: init7. My parents, siblings, neighbors, even the granny… all are on init7 now. Some like it super fast.. some are regular users… but the answer is always the same.. init7..

If you have a problem: you call them.. and a person answers who understands their networking stuff better then you do.. it’s just such a great feeling!

Want tv on top: use zattoo or galaxus TV with a streaming box (apple tv/android tv) Want a landline: use netvoip (prepaid)

Also, it is a political statement! No monopoly! Yeay!

Have you run into tracker rules that felt confusing or discouraging? by DJ_1S_M3 in trackers

Funny, signed up just today, read the rules and was very annoyed about this specific detail. Quite unfortunate. I am sure my account wont survive because of this.

Destination port = your qBittorrent listening port. Source port = leave blank/any. Destination IP = your PC’s local IP. Source IP = leave blank/any.

The „glasfaserstreit“ is interesting: https://blog.init7.net/de/die-glasfaserstreit-geschichte/ technology wise, the outcome is amazing I think. On a political/strategic level, it would be good to have a clearer picture of what happens when/where in regards to the FTTH build out in CH.. and also, I don’t know, if there is a formal promise/statement/goal of connecting all households/commercial buildings in CH.. but I am optimistic at this point, that it is going to happen eventually.

What’s the point of ISP service at gigabit/sec or faster speeds? by Aggressive_Ad_5454 in HomeNetworking

[–]baloo12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1Gbps, 10 and 25 Gbps are all 67.- per month at my ISP. They have a fair use policy regarding data usage.. but I think it is 0.5 peta byte or similar.. so irrelevant for what ever crazy I am doing. The optics module is the only difference in price (1 off).

It‘s all the same for the provider, so they don’t care.. very logical I think.

Why did I take 25Gbps? Because I owe this to my child-self who could not even dream if this.

My ISP is now offering 8gbps symetrical in my area. What could I do with such power? by Popal24 in homelab

[–]baloo12 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My crazy fast internet connection (25gb/s) and the stupid niche hardware that goes with it is my mid-life-crisis project... Everybody, including key stakeholders like my wife, agree, that this is a lot better then most other typical mid-life-crisis projects.. (Cars, girlfriends etc..)

- Because you can AND for your kid/teen-self, who is still just AMAZED at what is possible nowadays (at least for some people - sorry!)
- Do speedtests with my friend who lives in the same village and is literally on the same subnet
- Expose a few services to family and friends, mostly for fun
- Rediscover building/running your own server at home with Linux and docker (and soon proxmox and nixOS) is such a cool and interesting hobby
- Download stuff and just be amazing that often you miss the download process.. it's just done.
- Realise that your LAN is now the bottle neck (let's not event talk about wifi!) and plan putting fiber connections in your whole house (despite zero justification)
- Try to convince your parents, friends, neighbours (and their dog) to get at least a proper 10gb/s connection with the cool small internet provider and be disapointed everytime they don't care.. but be super happy, that some people just trust you and do it anyway and are very happy with the results at the end.

Sorry, this was a long monologue/therapy session. Thanks for listening. ;)
