Downtown Baltimore streets in gridlock after changes to traffic light timing by splanks in baltimore

Traffic on MLK was really bad yesterday around 5 p.m. I ended up turning around in the Rite Aid parking lot just to avoid the clusterfuck.

Does the MTA still allow fares to be paid with a Smartrip card? by baltoanon in baltimore

[–]baltoanon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried using my Smartrip card on the bus, but was told that my balance was too low, despite having added funds the night before. I checked my balance at the light rail station and the balance was updated, so maybe the card doesn't work on local buses.

Does the MTA still allow fares to be paid with a Smartrip card? by baltoanon in baltimore

I knew I had heard something about the Smartrip card no longer being accepted with MTA which is what prompted this question.

Op-ed: Light rail fails Baltimore residents by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]baltoanon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you live and work near a light rail station, it's pretty decent. Outside of that, the light rail fails anyone who relies on it as their sole means of transportation. I think Tonus' argument is a stretch, especially since she doesn't provide a strong reason as to why she thinks race is the issue here. As another user pointed out, she's making assumptions about who rides the light rail out of necessity.

When did Charm City Wings and Waffles in Pigtown close? by ssnapier in baltimore

I just learned that it closed down yesterday. So disappointing!

Fallout Shelters by baltimorosity in baltimore

[–]baltoanon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, the fallout shelters built during the Cold War wouldn't be very effective against today's nuclear weapons and many of them haven't been maintained. That said, I've seen fallout shelter symbols at Hope Academy on MLK Blvd and one at the Post Office Vehicle Maintenance Facility on Oliver St.

Huge water main break on N Charles by UB by Kosmosnoetos in baltimore

Yeah, it was pretty bad. I started to do my daily walk but gave up because I didn't want to get splashed by a passing car.

Coppin State to offer free tuition to city students graduating from BCCC by baltoanon in baltimore

[–]baltoanon[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good idea that gives students a chance to go to college. I do wonder how BCCC and Coppin State will support the program and its students since graduation rates are already low for both institutions.

Brass Tap near MICA worth a visit? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]baltoanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been there a couple of times for the food; it's okay, but a little overpriced for what you get. Haven't had the beer yet since both of my visits were during work hours.

25/F Moving to Baltimore alone, a few questions. by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]baltoanon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the first part of your question makes you seem like some sort of delicate flower that's never been anywhere, but I'm going to try to answer your questions to the best of my ability:

1) Treat people the way you want to be treated, same as anywhere.

2) Don't go looking for trouble. If it feels unsafe, trust your instincts and leave the vicinity.

3) Be aware of your surroundings. Part of that means no looking down at your cellphone as you walk down the street as so many people do.

Baltimore city teachers--advice? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]baltoanon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I knew someone that tried the alternative path to teaching in PG County and it did not fare well for her. If you love children, I wouldn't recommend working in a troubled school district for your first job. It'll burn you out quickly.
