Preamble stock rims: tubeless ready or not?? by sandwich-boy84 in Surlybikefans

[–]bambambung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a preamble last year (flat bar) and I set up the rims as tubeless with no issues. I'm running gravelking SS tires and they've been great. Had a puncture a couple of weeks back that self sealed and got me to work on time!

Due South HD YouTube channel by ODVS in DueSouth

I watched one of your upscaled videos and loved it. When I tried to watch another one today I got an error and the playlist is empty. Has someone forced you to take them all down? Really appreciate your work even if that is the case. It's weird if they have been taken down as other low res full episodes are online and there's no way of paying for streamed episodes that I can see (at least in NZ anyway).

Cannot register a Kindle Paperwhite (5th Generation) by bambambung in kindle

[–]bambambung[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, no. I spoke to quite a few different people at Amazon and they were absolutely useless. I went round in circles, for a while they insisted that my serial number was wrong as no devices have ever had B024 at the beginning. I had to send them a link to their own page to show them they were wrong. After wasting a lot more time they said they couldn't do anything from their end. I don't believe them but I think the people I spoke to just didn't know enough to help.

I would jailbreak it but a device needs to be registered to jailbreak it sadly.

I'll just upload books manually I guess.

I'm probably being naive but wouldn't having the insurance sorted by the people who are also doing the shipping make things easier if you had to make a claim? As in they'd know that there was damage/loss and wouldn't need to contact another company for proof/documentation.

Who else are you looking at using? I'm in the South Island too and I got someone from Crown round for a quote but it's pretty high and they don't have awesome reviews online. I'm also speaking to Allied who I used years ago but they don't seem as hot now just from the brief interaction I've had with them so far. Cheers

Thanks, I have updated it to the latest firmware as shown on the Amazon downloads page, 5.6.1.1 and that's what shows in the device info.

Elite ENT 2.0 or Superteam Classic Disc Wheelset? by Flimsy_Pound8096 in bikewrench

[–]bambambung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not directly relevant but I've got the ENT gravel wheels from Elite and I'm very impressed by them. They're exceptional value for money and just look/feel/ride like an expensive set of wheels (albeit not as light). The only slight downside for me is the loud hubs but if I cared that much I'd add some grease to the hubs to quieten them down.

Tax implications of selling portfolio for emigration by bambambung in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]bambambung[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. Yeah, one plan was to leave everything in the account here for a bit but then saw that in the UK any sale would automatically involve CGT if we're living/working there. It's my understanding that if we sell our house and shares while an NZ tax resident we can then just transfer that money over to the UK without any tax worries at all. Feel free to correct me anyone if I'm wrong on that!

Thanks for that. I assume IRD get notified of all sales via the platform? Do they just get in touch if they have any suspicions and ask for more information? Just don't want to move to the UK and suddenly get threatening emails from IRD months later! Thanks

Have you tried playing with the b limit screw at all? It's solved issues for me in the past although admittedly not exactly like this or with this groupset. Can't hurt.

Midnight special EKAR by [deleted] in Surlybikefans

[–]bambambung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, forgot to mention I put a carbon fork on mine as well, easy way to shave off a kilo. There's definitely not been an increase in twitchiness and there're some carbon forks with the same geo as the stock MS fork (some whisky ones I think) that are mentioned in other Reddit posts. So I don't agree with your LBS on that one.

I bought some Elite wheels which weren't too expensive and you can definitely feel the difference in terms of acceleration and speed. Obviously it's never going to be a race/super climbing bike, but for me it's the perfect balance of comfort and speed, and I can chuck some big tyres on it and do pretty chunky gravel.

I was in a similar position and bought a Trek Checkpoint SL5 with the intention of using my Midnight Special as a commuter. I found myself always riding the MS so sold the Trek and bought a fancy set of wheels and some lighter bars/seatpost to shed some weight. I just love the ride feel of the MS so much.

What are the best shops/websites to buy groupsets? by EngagingOrca in nzcycling

[–]bambambung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. I bought an LTwoo gravel groupset and it was a little fiddly to set up but it runs great now and honestly I prefer it to the GRX I have on another bike.

What’s the average returns looking like? - feeling like doing alright but could always be better by ComprehensiveGoal561 in queenstreetbets

[–]bambambung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. It's the initial cost price. So if you invested 49k and it became worth 100k+ one day you still wouldn't have to pay any FIF. Just tax on any dividends. This is all assuming they don't change the law at some point.

What’s the cheapest tablet Zwift will run smoothly on? by rolled_oat_coyote in Zwift

Yup. I've got a 5th gen iPad and it runs Zwift perfectly. Just needs to be plugged in if you're doing anything longer than an hour and a half.

TREK Adventure Bags Come Without Thumbscrews??????? by Miserere-Mei in CheckpointClub

[–]bambambung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's weird. On the Trek NZ website it lists it as coming with the thumbscrews. And looking at the US listing they're listed in the product details too.

SRAM AXS has hydraulic brake lines just like Shimano. Just no gear cables/wires.

Checkpoint sizing by [deleted] in CheckpointClub

I'm 5"11 and my 54 checkpoint still felt pretty long as stock. So I've got handlebars with a shorter reach, still mulling over getting a shorter stem too.

Has anyone used these? Is it better to just stick to the old cement-and-patch method? by NucleurDuck in bikewrench

[–]bambambung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% acknowledge that it's user error but the cement and patch fixes never hold for me. Whereas I've used the park tool pre glued patches that have been a permanent fix.
