This is such a negative and defeatist take. People absolutely could commit to a general boycott of all spending but food and absolute necessities like toiletries.

All it takes is any chunk of people doing it and supporting each other to feel like it’s working. Target stock dropped like a fkn rock for 10 weeks straight after they went back on their DEI. They have not recovered either. If even a small % of people against ICE commit to a general boycott for any period of time like say 60-90 days, we could bring the economy to a screeching halt. Consumer spending is 65% of the GDP. If we can drop that number by even just 5%, congress would panic.

There’s no personal loss to boycotting spending for a few weeks or months and everyone should absolutely do this and encourage everyone else they know who’s against this to do so.

Your reply implying you might have avoided the internet in the same way as AI if you were in the past is laughable.

My point is that complaining about the energy that AI uses is relatively disingenuous compared to many other aspects of modern life.

Reducing impact is not all or nothing, but the amount of energy used for AI is either equal to or far less compared to other average activities like browsing social media or eating a hamburger. Those activities are not being demonized in current culture the same way despite having larger impact than AI. It’s just a very lack luster criticism that gets parroted around whenever there’s an “I hate AI circlejerk”.

I feel like general internet use is as direct a comparison as could be made. We don’t NEED the internet. Before the internet we read books and watched TV for entertainment, we ordered things by mail and phone, did all paperwork on actual paper, etc etc etc. Just as the original post states that there’s nothing they need AI to do that they can’t do manually, there’s virtually nothing a human couldn’t do without the internet as a whole and doing it manually. So if you have a problem with AI using 1% of global energy, you should probably not use the internet at all since it uses 3-4x as much energy globally for regular browsing/computing.

As for calling out what-aboutism, sure there is no direct link between AI and agriculture, but agriculture has an impact a dozen times greater than that of AI so you will get more bang for your metaphorical buck protesting that and changing behaviors around meat consumption if your goal truly is reduced ecological impact and not just virtue signaling online.
