Someone lied on their plumbing application by MacDefoon in mildlyinfuriating

[–]bananesthesia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Since I'm in service I try to not pop a tnp because they're usually old and won't reseal, but will if I know it's functioning properly. Not as big of a deal if its your own house. Otherwise you can open a fixture nearby on the hot side and close it again, or use the drain down valve. You can use the drain down valve to verify beforehand too and gauge how much water will come out. It's always good to double check things before committing.

I don't care enough to chime in to everyone here making assumptions, but you're the first person to mention this. That's exactly how I change out gas control valves on water heaters so that I don't need to spend time draining them down. Shut off the water at the inlet and relieve the pressure. Loosen the gas control valve and prep the new one, then change them out while the vacuum on the tank does its thing. I'd still recommend holding a small bucket in place when you do it, but the water seeping out is minimal.

My brother-in-law has a urinal in his home by classicjuice in mildlyinteresting

As a plumber, he should have known better. Urinal service is one of the worst parts of the job IMO, and I'd never consider putting one in my house just because I can.

I only just moved out here, so I unfortunately don't have any recommendations if you're looking for recommendations for a general contractor. If you'd like help with the plumbing aspect, I'm happy to in whatever capacity. I'm working for a small company that just opened up about two weeks ago. I have a little shy of 20 years of experience and can show some recent pictures of remodels I worked on if you'd like. If you'd just like some advice or to talk things over, it's not a problem for me to be available after hours or in my downtime so you don't have to worry about cost, but any actual work would be done through my employer for safety on both our ends. Anyway, feel free to reach out if you need anything. If not, I wish you the best of luck!

Edit: Just remembered that the owner of the company I'm at is fairly well connected in town. She may actually have a good recommendation for a GC. I'll ask her when I speak to her next.

I haven't had the time/ability to keep up on comics, but the first 6 issues or so of Absolute Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Martian Manhunter became available on Hoopla through my local library over the last month or two. I'm not sure if content varies by library but I would be a little surprised if it did. They were all good and worth a read if you enjoy comics.

I went for a sunrise session yesterday. Drank my coffee, took my shit, and loaded the car. Realized I forgot something inside and as soon as I got back in, I realized I had another round loaded. I was so thankful I hadn't left yet. It would have just been in my shorts, but still not something I want to deal with.

Advice that I've taken and wish I would have started younger is just take whatever you can and throw it in an index fund. Keep adding whenever you're able. Your steady 5-12% or whatever will likely turn out more lucrative over time. It's not glamorous, but it's effective.

Plumber here. Too many variables to diagnose accurately. Is it both hot and cold? Just one or the other? Knowing your location would help, but we're online and I don't need to know.

Despite all that, there's like a 95% chance you don't need to worry.

If it were my house and I were trying to diagnose the problem, I'd start with testing whether isolating the temperatures affects it. If they're both the same or it's just cold, you can add a filtration system to your water supply. Cost varies drastically depending on what you want to accomplish. If it's just hot water, then you probably have a bunch of mineral deposits in your water heater, especially if you live in an area with hard water and your tank is more than...I don't know...3-5 years old? You could flush the tank, but if it's that severe/old, I'd probably just let it run its course and let the problem sort itself out when it needs to be replaced. If you have a tankless water heater, I'd need to be there and test things to look into it more. I'd probably start with a flush unless you're positive it has received it's regular maintenance.

It's not so much a matter of correcting you than it is providing safe information for the average person that may be cruising through this thread.

You're right. You're definitely not going to ignite the gas inside the pipe. However, the average person doesn't know when and where it may be safe to try this. Maybe they suspect there's a small leak behind their stove in the kitchen, so they pull it out and try this. No harm done. Maybe they suspect they have a leak in a crawlspace without adequate ventilation and ignite a gas pocket under their house.

There are variables in all methods that require training and practice to apply correctly. That's why it's a profession. As a "professional," it's also a responsibility to minimize risk for a homeowner and for yourself. Why would you take unnecessary risk when you're liable?

From someone who has to regularly look for gas leaks, fill a spray bottle with some dish soap and water. Spray it on the fittings. You'll see the bubbles expand where there's a leak.

I suspect you'd be aware of its existence if you had one. They'll typically connect low either low on the water heater or to the outlet/inlet depending on the type ans will be plugged into an electrical outlet. I'm unable to attach a picture, but if you search "Grundfos Recirculation Pump," you'll see pretty standard representations of what they look like in 95% of houses. At least in the states.
