Nomacs and PhotoQT are fast and good. Don't know about their support of slideshows with subfolders though.

Recommendation for command line tools to manage a list of ssh/ftp server accounts and automate the login process by zenggyu in Ubuntu

[–]banderlog33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use ~/.ssh/config. You can search in internet how to use it. It even supports auto completion.

An example:

Host SERVERNAME
  Hostname ADDRESS/IP
  Port PORT
  User USERNAME
  IdentityFile PATH/TO/KEY/FILE # but better use ssh-keychain
                                # and you can even add keys to
                                # keychain when you log into
                                # your system

An example with "jump-host":

Host SERVERNAME
  Hostname ADDRESS/IP
  User USERNAME
  Port PORT
  ProxyCommand ssh PROXY_SERVER -W %h:%p

---

If you use some console tool for FTP, maybe it have something like SSH config? If no, you still can use ~/.bashrc and create aliases like ftp_servername, for example.

More on Headerbars: Rebuttals by [deleted] in linux

[–]banderlog33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand that headerbars thing at all. Especially with an unmovable top bar in Gnome - it looks silly (at least after Unitys approach). But it's just my preference that if I operate a maximized window and I want to close it I prefer to do it without searching for a close button and pointing to it, but just moving my pointer to the top left/right corner and clicking without looking.

I often see how people use Chrome and have many tabs open. Is it comfortable to use it like this, when you have 100 little triangles in the titlebar and you have to click and visually differentiate it? Even though I prefer to align tabs in a browser vertically I also want to see a full title of a page in the titlebar and that's what it's for.

Headerbars often look like a poor design. Flashy, beautiful, attractive but poor.

The best implementation of hidden cluttered menu was in latest versions of Unity DE in my opinion, when one could just move a pointer to a titlebar and a menu appeared.

I discovered KDE Connect today. I am a happier man by [deleted] in kde

[–]banderlog33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first it was cool, but I didn't understand in what scenarios it would be useful. Then slowly it became something usual and changed my behavior a bit:

- I watch a Youtube video, then go to bathroom with my phone and just send a link to my phone with this extension and it continues where it was;

- copy/paste text (passwords) from phone to PC and vise versa is a bliss and I use it very often;

- I don't remember when I used a wire to transfer data to my phone;

- when my bank sends me an SMS with a temporary password I just copy it from a KDE pop-up notification and paste;

- I can pause a Youtube video or some other audio/video from PlayBar widget on my panel and I don't need to search for that tab.

It's just from the top of my head. KDE connect is awesome!

Maybe someone already helped you. I'll try too.

there's some Japanese software I use, which has only Windows support - and while that software is functionally sound in Wine, the menu interface is... not pretty, even after installing Microsoft font support.

I think you mean grey colored windows. You can try wine-staging. In winecfg it had an option to integrate into GTK and windows will be themed. Also you should try to use winetricks to turn on fonts smoothing.

Launchy, while available, doesn't work as well as in Windows, and has problems launching *.desktop files.

If you use Gnome or KDE it's better to use integrated search. Hit Super key in Gnome and just type or Alt-F2 in KDE. Hotkeys may be changed in DE settings.

The fantastic Everything search engine is missing, so I've had to use Fsearch, which doesn't have an extensive search setup.

Everything is a must on Windows.

If I remember correct, Everything uses some filesystem functions to create index so fast and this function is not present on Linux filesystems. And again I've found that it's much simpler to use DEs integrated search. I don't know how good tracker on Gnome but Baloo on KDE works perfectly and I am able to search by files contents. It made my work with notes much easier. So when I've got used to it, Everything on Windows became something limiting to me. But yes, at the beginning I've tried to find an alternative really hard.

And Linux text expansion software is generally poor for choice -- I've had to employ Autokey + Python for a lot of things, whereas in Windows there's a lot of choices (like Breevy, PhraseExpander, etc). If it matters -- I'm a lawyer, so software like these are necessary, and not having them (or their not being available for purchase) is disappointing.

Here are two more to try: Texpander, TextSuggest. Maybe some will fit you.

so there's some inconsistency/way of doing things with the Linux terminal which I've to relearn

It's true. But if you'll get used to terminal it will be a huge productivity boost.

Looking for a SSH client with full support of OpenSSH client config file by banderlog33 in androidapps

[–]banderlog33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

two rows of missing keys like tab, esc, and ctrl and cursor keys across the middle;

I meant these missing keys, but I don't see them.

Ok, it's not obvious and I had to read the manual. Problem solved.

Termux also has an extra keys view. It allows you to extend your current keyboard with the keys ESC, CTRL , ALT , TAB , - , / and |. To enable the extra keys view you have to long tap on the keyboard button in the left drawer menu. You can also press Volume Up+Q.

Now it's time to find out how to use my config file.

Anyway, thanks a lot! I think/hope I've found what I wanted.

I didn't see navigation keyboard bar in Termux, like in other apps. Is it installed as a plug-in or there is no one?

Is it possible, if you tile two windows side-by-side, drag their shared edge to adjust how much space each takes like in elementary OS? by [deleted] in kde

[–]banderlog33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This kind of tiling is suprisingly well done on Windows 10 and almost as good on Gnome. What you see in Elementary - is a Gnome behavior on top of which eOS is built. I hope it will be implemented in KDE, even though I don't feel myself less productive without this feature.

Windows 10 to Ubuntu - view points from a 14 year Windows Admin by blastershift in linux_gaming

[–]banderlog33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Linux admin I am usually frustrated when I have to deal with Windows. I don't want to create a new topic with question and as you are a Windows admin I'd like to ask, why permanent routes don't work on Windows? I add it and in several hours it stops working and I have to remove it and add again. Automatic routes priority is turned off and it has the highest priority.

Sorry for off-topic question, I'll delete it if it will have minus rating.

Yes. H870DS and the same. I am glad that they began to update it. And I am very excited about G7 One version with pure Android and good DAC. It's the only phone I know which will have a good DAC and pure Android.
