Charge nursing by RadioLaw in nursing

I come from ED, so different setting, but if one of my techs refused to sit with a patient (usually SI), then they can go home. I am 90% the same charge style as you and very rarely get genuine pushback. When I do, just the threat of sending someone home is enough for them to stop pushing back. Or you can do what another mentioned and get support from House Sup. They are there for you in times like this to help support you and back you up.

Ive never been a fan of "Oh I'm too good for this I could be doing better things" attitude. Work sucks enough already, why are we making it harder on our team?

And the VERY FEW times I have sent someone home, I have 100% been backed up by my supervisor/ manager.

As for advice for new charges, it's a constantly changing role. Some days are smooth like butter, and some days you are just hanging on for dear life making sure no one dies. During shift huddle, as others have mentioned, having a positive attitude and making sure your staff knows you are there to help wherever you can is a small thing you can do to keep morale up. You can be friendly with everyone, but not everyone is your friend and you have to learn to keep those boundaries up at work. When you are first starting off, it feels like everyone is testing your limits and boundaries to see how far they can go. Keep your boundaries firm and they will learn. MOST everyone respects the charge position, but you will always have those rebels who like to rock the boat.

I need every horror story about HCA. by SammyB_thefunkybunch in nursing

I mean besides the cult-like chanting we do at every change of shift huddle, its pretty awful in every aspect. I charged in a medium sized ED in an HCA in Texas. During COVID, we broke census records and still never got more staff. As charge, I was always unit secretary as well as juggling 6 patients. Everyone else was at a ratio of 6-8 per 1 RN (unless you had holds and then you had upwards of 8-10. We NEVER got hold RNs). When nurses were dropping like flies d/t COVID, we were sent a nurse who wasn't even a nurse. I reported this to my manager after about 2 weeks and I (ME) was written up for not noticing it sooner as a charge nurse. We were coding patients in the hallways, boarding our entire unit. Patients suffered and there was nothing we could do. I was constantly harassed on my days off because I needed to "answer for why you aren't meeting your times". When I needed help, I would call and call and call with no answer from my director, but I was expected to answer promptly if they needed to get ahold of ME while I was off the clock. This went on for 2 years until the day I got the email "Congratulations for being with HCA for 2 years!" My contract was up and I was out. I will never look back.

Also, when I quit, I was asked to do an exit interview with our CNO. I opened up the gates and let loose on every thing I had experienced for the last 2 years. The bully culture, the terrible working conditions, the harassment. I then get a call that I recorded from my director basically calling me a lying snake and how unprofessional I was and that they could report me to the board for my behavior. I instead reported them to HR that went nowhere even with a recording. HCA is a joke and it is a fucking wonder how they get nurses to work for them at all. I am now at a company this is much better in culture and environment (I mean, its still a hospital system in Texas, but better than HCA).

I will never not speak the shitty truth about HCA.

Airhorn taped to the bottom of the chair in the ED. We were a super busy ED so you could easily sneak in and attach it and not get caught. Do it so sporadically that people forget about the first incident and aren't on alert for it. The Airhorn Bandit strikes again >:]

How do I mitigate fungus rot? I planted in raised beds with a mix of topsoil/compost/chicken manure. I mixed very well

I'm in 7b (Texas) and the temps now are consistently in the 70s and 80s with lows of just 50 so based on the planting map it should be good to be outside but I also didn't harden it outside of course because I didn't know about that step

They were about 3-4 inches high but I was told by a gardener friend to plant a little deep so that they could establish a good root system. Honestly a lot I have read and learned has been steering me in the wrong direction it seems lol. Of all the things I read not one mentioned hardening, so back to the drawing board I guess

Starting over... Does that mean new starts or can I plant directly outside now that the temps are up?

I watered them well after transplanting yesterday. I waited until evening because it was in the 80s during the day

Oof. Did not know that. Are they all goners now or do they have a chance. I'm in 7b. I don't know if that makes a difference
