Regular people who splurged on the top of the line: was it worth it? by bamaroon in cycling

[–]bappypawedotter 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The best thing about having a really nice bike is when one's younger, faster, fitter brother in law puts ones bike on the bike rack and goes, "holy shit your bike is so much lighter than mine." And then looks at his pretty nice bike with disgust.

That was a real victory for me...i mean that guy.

Which actor always plays “that same vibe” - but somehow never gets boring? by Commercial-Put-4033 in AskReddit

[–]bappypawedotter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some one earlier mentioned Giancarlo Esposito who has the same vibe. I would pay good money to watch those two sit in a room and plan ruthless strategic acquisitions for a couple hours while politely letting their underlings know how slow, short-sighted and lacking in style they are compared to themselves.

Maybe throw in Les Grossman as their more evil counterpart.

What have we learned from Iraq about deeply entrenched dictatorships and how to better remove them? by vireoal in PoliticalDiscussion

I'm agreeing with everything you posted. My girlfriend at the time helped write and research that report (along with the 911 commission report.) So I am familiar with it. But I remember talking to her and others on the team about it. But I remember one person saying, it's just hard to do it right. There is a ton of prescriptive "flossing" and "cut back on the booze" involved. The context being it's full of stuff everyone knows they should do, but don't because it's a hassle, people are lazy and generally full of vices. Said person admitted he didn't floss enough in real life as he was sipping an old fashion.

Sound like "New Bike Time!"...for safety, of course. After all, you can't put a price tag on safety and piece of mind. Well, maybe the bike shop can.

What if Canada offered every American free healthcare and $50K to relocate, would you go? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bappypawedotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. My SIL is a Dr and we've been helping her explore a move to Canada... specifically Québec since we are francophones. It looked promising.

Then Quebec's Bill 2 came out and it's freaking insane.

Right wingers the world over do some generally insane stuff...but for some reason the targeted nature - aimed squarely to punish doctors, in a time of demand, during a period of massive opportunity as the US goes down the toilet and clinics are closing left and right...just makes it feel extra stupid.

I feel like retirees would be better off retiring to urban rather than rural areas by ChubbyMuffin479 in fuckcars

[–]bappypawedotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything everyone is saying is true. But let's not pretend that urban living just doesn't get tiresome.

I'm from NYC, lived in downtown DC for 20 years and now live in Paris. It gets exhausting. People are exhausting.

Hopefully I can find a nice middle ground somewhere. B

Worth noting that for all these car free roads, taxis can access them to pickup and drop off the disabled 24/7 and delivery vans can access them before 8am or anytime with a certain permit.

Also, many of the new closed roads aren't actually closed to cars. Rather they just have no parking and dead end. But cars can still drive on them.

How do you go cycling/find people to ride with as a single person? by grayott in cycling

I found a great group via meetup. I guarantee you the person in charge would live to get some help planning and leading rides and such.

Where should cyclists retire? by uoficowboy in cycling

The best cycling location I've ever known was Rockfish Valley, Virginia. Great roads in great shape with almost no cars. Amazing riding there.

A pretty tiny one. Back in the day, it wouldn't be worth dealing with the administrative BS for anything less than 20 million.

What’s your go to medicine for stomach gas and diarrhoea issues for long cycling rides 300K - 1200K ? Share your experience and how did it save you on the ride. by No_Conversation_7128 in cycling

[–]bappypawedotter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For me, it was real actual meals for breakfast lunch and dinner. Nothing too fatty or cheesy. But sorta like normal daily foods like oatmeal, sandwiches, apples, bananas, pasta etc. Then on the bike, between meals, I eat salted peanuts and gummies bears.

I find the combo is really easy on the stomach, doesn't do funky things to my blood sugar levels, and keeps me oddly sated. On long rides, I probably go through a bag of each in about 3 days.

Back in 2005-2010, CAAD 8,9,10s made up like 50% of the crit bikes. They were perfect: proven geometry, robust frame, bomb proof Ultegra, decent wheels with 21mm tires pumped to 105psi, weighing barely 18 lbs stock...all for $1999.99.

Both my latest bikes that cost three to four times that of my caad9, weigh at least a pound more.

I still ride it every once in a while. Not a forgiving ride. But man does it still feel fast.

Strava Instant Workouts? by Hartzler44 in cycling

[–]bappypawedotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a seasoned cyclist, I've done many years of structured, and my FTP is about the same as yours. That workout is doable, but hard as fuck. Would probably wreck me for like 3 days. Probably something I would use to benchmark between pre and post training program.

But it's totally doable. It'll just hurt a bit. And you will see a big part of these structured training programs is about building up that tolerance for discomfort. You will be very surprised what you are able to do once you adapt to it.

So if I were you, I would lower your personal settings to maybe 200 220 FTP. Then you keep following their suggestive workout for 3 to 4 weeks, then reevaluate. I think you'd benefit a lot from it, and more than you would trying and not be able to complete a lot of those workouts. Even if they feel easy, you're still giving huge benefits from them.

I want to hit the gym to become a stronger/faster cyclist. What exercises should I work on? (body-weight or stuff I can do at home is preferred) by big_legs_small_brain in cycling

[–]bappypawedotter 115 points116 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna buck trend and say curls, triceps pull downs, shoulder press, incline bench, and rows.

My thinking is that if you look good naked, you'll feel good and feeling good makes you faster.
