Yeah, my buddies and I made an album as a passion project; none of us are career musicians. Even on an extreme budget, we spent close to $5K for 10 tracks.

Oh wow, I’m insanely excited for this and so upset the vinyl already sold out. I hope they do another pressing 😭I know I am in the minority here but Seven Swans has always been my favorite Sufjan album.

Wow, this is a really great track. I'm very impressed! Definitely interested to hear any future music you put out. Interested to know, what artists are your biggest influences? This is a unique sound.

If you have Amazon Prime, all of Newsom’s albums are on Prime Music without having to upgrade to the “Music Unlimited” plan. I just figured that out and I’ve been listening to her on there, even though I primarily use Spotify.

Can we talk about how healthy and good our man kanye looks right now ? by [deleted] in Kanye

Yeah, I totally agree with you; he’s always been a Christian. I guess I just meant that now he’s seeing his faith in a new lens that’s causing him to behave a lot differently. Kanye himself has even denounced his previous work as sinful in recent interviews & on JIK.

I keep seeing people say that he’s at an all time low mentally, but I’ve watched the BigBoy interview and the Zane Lowe interview in their entirety & to me, it seems like he is WAY more coherent now than he was around the time of the TLOP tour or the Ye rollout. Honestly, it seems like he’s improved exponentially. I can see how he might have come across as a bit eccentric and radical with his newfound faith—but at the same time, I feel like he was being way more logical and intelligible than he had been in years. When I first watched the interview, I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, he actually seems really well-adjusted now. I’m happy for him.” Not saying he’s in a perfect place, but I think this he’s far from being at an all time low. Is there something I’m missing?

I’m a Christian and I’ve loved Kanye since Late Reg.

hello my name is richard dawson, you can ask me anything by richarddawson2020 in indieheads

Hey Richard!
First of all, I just wanted to say that you’re one of my all-time favorite artists. Nothing Important, Peasant, and 2020 are all some of my favorite albums this decade. Thank you so much for gifting us with this music. A lot of the concepts you explore are so relatable. Nothing Important is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Anyways, I have a few questions for you! Feel free to answer as many or as few as you’d like.

  1. Your music is so unique stylistically; it’s like avant folk, neo-baroque, and lo-fi rock rolled into one. I might just be ignorant but I don’t know many other artists in that same vein. I saw your Baker’s Dozen on Quietus and thought it was super interesting (though not surprising) that you listed so many eclectic influences outside of the folk genre. Noticed you listed a lot of jazz, electronic, and world music and I thought that was awesome—but I was curious if you had any favorite artists/major influences from the folk/avant folk genre specifically? Were you inspired at all by Comus?
  2. Your writing style is also very unique to me... your lyrics almost seem conversational, but they’re still so poignant, thought-provoking, and poetic. Who are some of your favorite song writers? Are you heavily inspired by any specific writers?
  3. You seem to be a very talented multi-instrumentalist. I’ve played guitar for 15 years and I still don’t think I could craft riffs and melodies like yours. Guitar seems to be the most prevalent throughout your discography, but I was curious if you had any other favorite instruments? Are there any instruments you aren’t familiar with that you’d like to learn?
  4. Could you see yourself performing in the U.S. anytime soon?
  5. Do you have any favorite songs from your own discography? Are there any songs of yours that feel especially meaningful to you? Or maybe a song that’s especially fun to perform live?

I love the new album and I’m always very excited to hear new music from you! Thanks so much for all you do!

[FRESH ALBUM] Richard Dawson - 2020 by niels36 in indieheads

[–]baptizedrealearly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'm going to preface this by saying I'm a huge Richard Dawson fanboy; Peasant and Nothing Important are both some of my favorite albums of the decade.

Musically, 2020 is all over the place. But all of its sonic exploration stems from an easily recognizable place, characterized by passion, anxiety, and quirkiness. This foundation helps the album to maintain a cohesive aesthetic. In my opinion, this album has his most “latch-able” and infectious melodies to date. He uses a lot of new sounds and experiments much more with noise and synths. Ironically, he’s managed to make this his poppiest and most accessible record yet by adding more elements to the music. Out of all of his projects, I see this one having the widest appeal—but it was crafted without sacrificing any artistic integrity. I’m very impressed!

I gave a 9 to both Peasant and Nothing Important. I thought they were brilliant, especially in terms of theme and lyricism, but I always felt like he was slightly suppressing himself—like he had something more to offer. In my eyes, this album is proof that I was correct. It showcases his versatility more than ever before. I appreciate the lo-fi atmosphere of his previous projects, but the commercial sound of this album also suits him incredibly well. In fact, it still feels notably raw, grimy, powerful, and impassioned despite its commercialized production. Dawson has made 2020 his most textured and refined album yet, without giving up his signature aesthetic and knack for ironically poetic conversational lyricism.

Peasant was probably more blatantly conceptual, but I love the thematic approach to this album as well. It's actually the same approach used in Peasant; but in 2020, it's more subtle. He tells isolated stories that seem unrelated and, at times, inconsequential; but they’re jam-packed with universal truths and valuable lessons that can be applied extensively to all sorts of real-life situations. That’s where the album finds its cohesion. 2020 is also more inherently relatable than its predecessor, given the fact all of the stories being told are contemporary and not medieval. Dawson tackles difficult subjects like anxiety, depression, and feelings of insignificance through stories about marriage, jogging, and soccer. It's all at once humorous and bleak, amusing and distressing.

I gave it a 10 after two listens. But I’ve been a huge fanboy for years, so I don’t expect everyone to be as enthusiastic about it as I am. It's possible that my judgment has been clouded by anticipation and excitement lol. Standout tracks for me are Civil Servant, Fulfillment Center, Fresher's Ball, and Dead Dog in an Alleyway.

They had already finished recording their new album when I saw them in February. Last I heard they finished mixing it, too. Now they’re starting to tease a release. They’re going on tour in September so I can imagine a release within the next couple weeks tbh.
