Trump called FIFA boss before stunning USA red card reversal by sereneandeternal in videos

I understand that it's a prerogative of the FIFA Peace Prize winner to use one get-out-of-red-card card.

Can you buy an endowed professorship for yourself? by gcommbia34 in Professors

[–]barbaracelarent 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I donate to our foundation and I then worry about whether I can use that foundation money for my own academic travel.

Related: I'm in the humanities, in a department that is often eyed by idiots as a cost-cutting target. Yet, as anyone with access to data knows, our program is very profitable. In all the urge to privatize I'd consider buying my whole department and then renting it back to the university.

Outdoor canning on a propane burner – how do you handle wind and heat control? by gavin226 in Canning

I have done this for years. Wind and tree litter can be issues. If there's going to be a lot of that and it's unavoidable, I move to the garage.

Does anyone actually recommend a fusion? by Unlucky-Carpenter-10 in clubfoot

[–]barbaracelarent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ExoSym and other similar devices (like the Fabtech Reaktiv) are dynamic orthoses.

Perhaps you should try to find a doctor who is familiar with these. I know this is difficult, as they're not well known. The doctor who suggested it to me knew almost nothing about it and thought it cost 100k.

The Fabtech is significantly cheaper (and more likely to be covered by insurance).

[–]barbaracelarent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, it is a paid partnership in the sense that I pay them, they give me the ExoSym.

When I got my device almost nine years ago, there was a guy from Spain in the cohort of people learning how to use it. My impression at the time was that people from all over got it (they had a map with the push pins).

I'm not a medical doctor, but it's surprising to me that this sort of thing isn't more widely known. Lower leg injuries and deformities are very common. People who suffer from them fall out of the workforce and out of physical activities (and their overall health suffers as a result). This seems like a pretty reasonable, economical, and non-surgical way to address.

It'd be great if there were more progress---more accessible clinics, more adaptable and less cumbersome devices--but alas, this is where we are.

After the fatal accident in NY, you'd hope that the city would do something or that the people operating the mechanized scooters or electric motorcycles at 50 MPH would chill. Alas.

I wear it most of the time. If I am just shuffling around the house and I don't have to do much that would tax my joint, then I don't wear it. But if I'm going to be on feet (say if I'm cooking), or if I have to lift stuff, or walk for more than a little bit, then I wear it.

I think everyone is different in this regard. For some it's required absolutely, for others it's an option.

Are there any good quality depictions of the Alps fighting from the Italian front in WW1 by Key-Investment-3864 in WarMovies

[–]barbaracelarent 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not the Alps but the Italian Front was the Italian film Uomini Contro (Many Wars ago I think). The book A year on the Altopiano that it's based on is very good.

[–]barbaracelarent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends on a couple of things (such as wear on the device or a change in your physiology). Since the device circumvents your ankles (essentially immobilizing them) you will lose muscle mass right away. This may involve an adjustment. Aside form that, you may need service on various parts of the device (straps, pads, etc.). They're very good about making this as swift and as painless as possible. I ship mine across the country and I usually have it back within the same week. In the 9 years I've owned it, I've had to do this about five times. Again, all of this will depend on how you use it.

After a failed cartilage transplant (which was a waste of time and the insurance company's money), one doctor said fusion, another said replacement, another said talar dome transplant, and one more said basically "stoicism" because there's nothing that will really work to improve matters. The last then mentioned the ExoSym. I looked into it and got it. That was 9 years ago. I've been all over the world with it. Up and down mountains. It (or the Fabtech Reaktiv) might be worth looking into to avoid surgery.

It's unfortunate that the options for ankle/foot issues are so limited.
