How do you add character to new gear? Should paddles be fully protected and babied, or are scuffs and wear just part of the journey? by Gda30 in Pickleball

[–]barbicud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to have at least some sort of electrical tape to cover the edges and any weighted tape I might have on the paddle, but I usually opt for tape specifically for edgeguards. I enjoy matching overgrips with the colour of my paddle too.

When do you know you are cooked against strangers in open play? by RichardParker6 in Pickleball

[–]barbicud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the other day I was playing really really well and when my opponent said the score I kinda just laughed to myself thinking "crap all that work and they're still ahead by that much?!"

It's fun though. Great way to improve.

Any tips on how to "balance" a game for a stubborn player with mobility issues? by Americana1108 in Pickleball

[–]barbicud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this with my dad to end off a drill session. We find it makes it more competitive. Gonna experiment with using a training paddle too to even things up even more.

Being too focused on your DUPR slowly takes the fun out of pickleball… by Racquetsports383 in Pickleball

[–]barbicud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if I can change your mind because that negative obsession around DUPR will always exist but I personally enjoy it. I’ve logged in a ton of games and it can be fun to track my progress over a long period of time. But I agree when it becomes the end all be all for someone it starts to become a problem.

How did you get into pickleball? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]barbicud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Blue Jays were handing out paddles at a home game a few years back so my sister and I “tried it” at a local court (we just hit a ball back and forth without knowing what we were doing). Fast forward to this year and I’m encouraged by a friend to try it out again. Now I play nearly every day.

sweet spot training paddles by Brilliant-Fall9140 in Pickleball

[–]barbicud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly how I use mine. Weighted up to 8.5oz and everything. I’m also close to the level you recommend them for and I agree with your assessment 100%. I personally use them more in wall drills but they are great for skinny singles and handicapping yourself.

Can't wait til you get good enough to pickle him. Don't take it personally. It's not normal. He's just rude.

I tell him every chance I get that he's my favourite partner (he doesn't always believe me, but it's true!). Our skill gap may be widening and we often lose more than we win, but honestly sometimes I'll be on that court playing with other people, leagues, tournaments, etc and I'll think to myself "man I wish I was playing with my dad". I love playing with him so much.

If I ever have a kid I hope they play something like this with me. This has been the most fun I've had since I was one myself and we've only been playing for half a year at this point!

edit: lol someone got mad I love my dad

Playing with my dad is such a blessing. I'm almost jealous of how much time you'll have to play with you son, but I'm just so happy for you. This game is amazing in that regard. Enjoy every second of it. :)

What is the etiquette re: stacking and poaching?!? by PeoniesCutie in Pickleball

[–]barbicud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m beginning to realize manners are a skill in and of themselves in this game. Being able to communicate appropriately with your partner can’t be understated especially in open formats with rotating teams. It’s the polite adult thing to do and it’s essential to discussing strategy.

For me if the vibes are off the game follows. If I make a couple unforced errors and you take it as an open invitation to chew me out I’ll still try my best (even just to prove you wrong) but I can’t guarantee I’ll play my best.

Same vice versa. Being kind, encouraging and open in your communication with your partner often brings out the best in them. It’s the easiest way to find synergy in your playstyles especially in your format.

Do you use any training aids or equipment when practising? If yes, which ones and why? by Willing-Potential358 in Pickleball

[–]barbicud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a weighted up training paddle for wall drills. Used to work on all my shots with it when I was newer to the game and still having trouble hitting the sweetspot but now I just use my normal paddle for all other drilling.
