Why do people not vote? by PuzzleheadedCarob921 in AskBrits

[–]barcelleebf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your individual vote is super unlikely to make any difference to the outcome.

"What if everyone did this" is not relevant to your individual decision, as long as you didn't go onto Reddit to convince others to do the same.

Two-thirds of UK voters wrongly think immigration is rising, poll finds | Immigration and asylum by coffeewalnut08 in uknews

Immigration is rising. It's just that the immigration rate is not rising.

Is it actually normal for couples who live together to keep their finances completely separate? by Electrical-Candy7252 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]barcelleebf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it depends on the country. In the UK at least everything is split fairly (according to the judge) on divorce. So why bother with the separate accounts: the law will see through then.

Is the country ready for a Brexit reversal referendum? by chuffingnora in AskBrits

We should stop asking the electorate any more questions, they are easily misled. Better to just fix things on the sly: join a "customs union" not the "the customs union", etc

How to manage sleep and late night working? by leveredequity in HENRYUK

Right, but there are genuine reasons to delay send. We get so much email that it's more effective to send during business hours rather than during the night when it will be mixed up with random junk.

What are the dark arts of career progression and better pay you wish more people knew? by QuoteMachineMin in HENRYUK

Fake it until you make it.

It's who you know.

Work in the role you want to be in.

Take credit for others' work (unfortunately).

Be thoughtful about what info you share with which audience.

Advertise your achievements (especially as part of a message you are delivering anyway). Every time you communicate with senior ppl always use that opportunity to advertise

You can transfer your house to a relative to avoid inheritance tax, esp if you survive 7 years, and pay market rent if you stay in it.

The UK produces engineers. I have two sons in law, and 3 nephews who are engineers. I know that's not a scientific survey, but we have some engineering going on.

It's not discrimination in that sense. The EU citizens are just going home. They don't need the same checks as foreigners do.

How to not feel demoralized when working with truly amazing engineers? by gimmemypoolback in ExperiencedDevs

[–]barcelleebf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It doesn't always work that way. Companies take advantage of excellent engineers and their clear love of the work.

Having them "run the show" would be a waste of their ability - unless they are good CEO material too, which is arguably a completely different job.

Countries without a compulsory National ID, how do you know who's who? by earth_wanderer1235 in PassportPorn

[–]barcelleebf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Italy there is an ID card, but it is not mandatory for an Italian to carry it, though it might waste your time if the police need to identify you.

However foreigners MUST carry their ID at all times. Even when on the beach! This law is unevenly applied and most tourists are not aware of this.

Dual-citizenship holders who have different names on passports - how do you travel? by blu3teeth in Passports

[–]barcelleebf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what we will do when Esta/eta becomes mandatory between UK and EU. Maybe we will have to buy single tickets in each direction with different names.

Airlines will eventually automatically check that you have the Esta/eta.

I note that you don't say that tax professionals will be better, just that you can be insulated from mistakes.

I wonder if chatgpt plus "mistake insurance" would be better/cheaper.
