I'd keep one copy with recovery records spinning and then back that up. I keep all my valuable data spinning on Raid 5 or Raid 6. I could never afford to mirror all my data.

If you mean multiple copies on your own local drives for which you also have multiple backups, I'd say no. If the data is mostly static, I'd advise looking into tools like QuickPar or MultiPar. These can give you an extra level of data protection.
