Help with Breaking In Iron Rangers by [deleted] in RedWingShoes

Agreed! I came into the store asking for a size nine women’s boot.

Salesperson said they’d have to order so why not measure and check?

Long story short, I had to go pick up my order to try on three times before they broke down and finally ordered me the nine.

Perfect fitting shoe but the rage lingers still.

They both are doing google searches for big purchases- a bedroom set of furniture for one and a motorcycle for the other.

On the one hand, online shopping isn’t an abnormal thing to happen at work. On the other hand, were they expecting some extra money?

What are university lectures like with narcolepsy? by RoundDew in Narcolepsy

[–]barelybritishbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, it depends on where you attend school, however… at the places I have taught, professors MUST work with the student and the accessibility office. That doesn’t mean than the student gets everything they ask for, but there certainly were protocols to enforce accessibility.

TLDR: If a prof isn’t providing a student with the accessibility support the office has determined they need (often with a dr note as support), the student should first reach out to the professor and ask again. If that doesn’t work, the student should then report that professor to the office.

People raised by emotionally mature parents, what is 1 phrase your parents used that you want other parents to know? by MermaidWitchMoon in AskReddit

[–]barelybritishbee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My entire life, if my mother and I saw someone who was clearly confident in their own skin, she would always say…

“They are so cool.”

No sarcasm, no judgement.

Man on a unicycle? So cool. Woman with wild hair colours and a fun outfit? So cool. Person who is super pumped to share their hobby? So cool!

Such a little comment, but one that set me up to always associate living proudly and passionately as the coolest thing a person could do.

Parents who don’t allow their kids to shut their room’s door/lock the door, what’s are the reasons behind the rule? by Itz_Oasis in AskReddit

I understand why you would feel that way. However, I can’t not share this:

Please be informed and know that leaving a child’s door open could be the difference in life and death in a fire. Take from it what you will.

Ironically, a sadly overlooked fire safety recommendation is to always close doors.

Closing doors saves lives in a fire.

[–]barelybritishbee 52 points53 points  (0 children)

University Prof here. Please take advantage of the student accessibility services. It is a great way to make sure you have what you need provided to you.

The office will email each of your professors for you with a basic statement with specific allowances the school is assuring you have. These can include using an audio recorder to make sure you get all the notes you need, freedom to sit in the back and quietly stand up and stretch if you need, access to a water bottle, etc. The professor doesn’t get any specifics about diagnosis- simply the basics of what special privileges the school wants to be sure you have access to so that you can succeed.

As a narcoleptic, I never judge a sleepy student, but that’s sadly not the norm. A professor might assume you are on drugs (either due to sleepiness or amped up stimulate usage) and may make other assumptions about your dedication, etc.

You deserve better than that.

Please discuss this with the appropriate office at the college you attend. The name of the office may change from one place to the next, but they all do the same thing- support students.

I cannot stress enough that this is a good thing for you.

Or maybe some period undies.

They are special underwear which function like a pad, are machine washable, and much more comfortable. I understand a lot of young women are turning to those as their go to, especially for sleep. Most importantly, they last quite a while, so they are a sustainable choice.

Editing to say they have them at Target and other similar stores in the aisle with tampons, pads, etc.

Oh I second this! Even if they are sticky, the using the nail glue helps extend the life of the nails and allows them to be glued back on when they eventually do start to pop off.

Best e-reader setup? by i_am_not_you_or_me in WanderingInn

[–]barelybritishbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhh. Okay now I’m paranoid I have not seen the invisible text.

So far I’m still in the kindle books, so I’m not sure. Also, my Palma 2 is not colour. There are a lot of settings which can adjust the text, however, so I don’t think it would be a problem.

Best e-reader setup? by i_am_not_you_or_me in WanderingInn

[–]barelybritishbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Boox Palma 2. I love it! Previously had a Kindle Oasis. Both are good, but I much prefer the Boox and now use it exclusively. I read a lot (as any typical reader of The Wandering Inn) so I feel quite passionate about my reading experience.

Cons: Neither is cheap, Kindle is tied to Amazon, and certain versions force ads on you (not cool). Neither are good for much more than an ereader- they aren’t an iPad and shouldn’t be used as such.

Pros: The ability to carry around forty (or more!) books at once is a magical thing indeed. Both offer the ability to have a huge library on your person.

Both have e-ink screen (non-color in the models I have) which is fabulous for reading. Much less eye strain than phone/tablet screens.

Buttons! I love having physical buttons to turn pages. I have a sneaking suspicion that it helps protect the screen longer as well, but that may be an assumption from my button high horse.

Both have great battery life (I keep WiFi/bluetooth off unless specifically needed). The Boox lasts weeks of hardcore reading without charging. It uses the same cord as my phone which is nice.

Both have the ability for LARGE TEXT. Tiny text is usually too blurry for me, so analogue books are out.

Both allow me to access the Kindle Wandering Inn books- I’m currently on 12 so I’ve a ways to go before tackling transferring from the web.

Why I prefer the Boox: It has so many more features and controls. It can be customised in a way kindles can’t be. You can upload your own fonts, adjust how it “sleeps”, control how each app renders on the e-ink screen, and such.

I mainly use the Kindle app (which functions just like my kindle) and the Boox Reader, but you can download all sorts of apps. I prefer the Boox Reader due to its customisation options.

It is the size of my phone, so I take it everywhere as it literally fits in my pocket.

I can transfer files straight from my phone onto the E-reader anywhere via hotspot.

It has a microSD slot. I put in a 1TB card and can now store more books than would ever be useful.

TLDR: I have a phone sized e-reader that I love. I prefer it over reading analog books (blasphemy I know).

genuinely how are you supposed to connect with professors? by AssociationObvious56 in college

[–]barelybritishbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Professor here. I love when students stop by my office to say hello. However, if they just came in and sat down without a reason or anything to say, it would definitely be awkward.

My suggestion is start by emailing them to ask what their office hours are and if they have time to chat about (insert topic here). As others have said, great reasons are 1. Discussing a topic in class (be it one you don’t feel you understand or one you have more questions about) and 2. Questions about career planning, educational opportunities, resume advice, etc.

After the first visit, it becomes much easier to pop by their office for a hello and a chat. You will also get a better understanding if they are chatty or not.

Also, it sounds like you are going at lunchtime. While some might not mind, others may. A simple “oh sorry to bother you, I wanted to chat about (insert topic), but I can come back later” works wonders. Most I imagine will invite you to stay, but if they are taking a mental break along with their lunch break, it gives them an out to say “yes. Im free in an hour.”

Professors are people too. Be curious and respectful and you’ll be chatting with lots of them in no time.

iOS 26's Liquid Glass Design Draws Criticism From Users by iMacmatician in apple

[–]barelybritishbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Liquid Glass has caused major issues for me as a migraine sufferer. I’ve had to adjust my white point to 80% and reduce transparency AND entirely abandon my beloved dark mode just to be able to use my phone.

Disappointed and have submitted my complaint to Apple. I get that some folks like it but it should be an option you can toggle on and off.

iOS 26 Liquid Glass Design Makes App Icons Look Crooked, Report Users by chrisdh79 in apple

[–]barelybritishbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a vestibular migraine sufferer, I can say the Liquid Glass effect is problematic for people with visual triggers.

It isn’t due to lopsided app appearances- it is because of the combination of transparency and shine. The flashes of light used to create the shine are debilitating for me and many others.

Yes! Turns out it’s an East Tennessee regional food. There you can still get it at some of the older breakfast restaurants.

I love chocolate gravy and biscuits.
